Tom Holland has been cast as the latest actor to portray the web-slinging superhero on the big screen in both the upcoming Sony standalone films as well as in Captain America: Civil War. Sony will be lending the character to Marvel Studios for its Avengers universe tie-in, and since Spider-Man plays an integral part in that storyline in the comics, it would have been near impossible to do the story justice without him.
“It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.” – Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group chairman
This will mark the second time fans will see a reboot of the franchise, as in most recent years we’ve seen Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield take on the role. However, this time Peter Parker is going to start out as a teenager with the time period entirely set in high school. Exploring more of Peter Parker’s adolescent years is an exciting new take on the film franchise.
