Music Monday Review: Passover by the Black Angels

This week’s review is brought to you by The Black Angels debut album Passover; a  psychedelic rock group from Austin, TX who hit the scene in 2006. While not something I haven’t heard before (since I like to look for obscure bands), they still hold something original in this century for me. Not everyone into music goes back and listens to what came before. Like I’ve said, I’m here to show you bands you won’t find listening to that incessant box you have to listen to every day at work in your cube, also known as the radio.

I first heard The Black Angels when I was flipping through channels, and I came upon the Fable’s III game commercial (included below).

Instantly, I was like, “Who is this?”  The first track that I heard and the first track on the album,”Young Dead Men”,  is still the stand out one for me.  The build up is great, and had me right away. There are tons of tacks to like on this album though, “Manipulation”, “Better off Alone”, and “Blood Hounds on my Tail” are all great, and each have a totally different sound from the next. Upbeat or somber, these tracks are great, and you need both moods to create a well rounded album.

Even if I do like this album, there’s still a few tracks I’m not a fan of.  “The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven”  just doesn’t have it, and neither does “Empire”. To me they just didn’t fit with the rest of the tracks. While not bad songs they just didn’t have a spark, and felt more rushed, and out of place.

All in all a great band with a great album, and something that I like to listen to when relaxing. Now, I understand that psychedelic rock really isn’t for everyone, and you’ll probably have trouble getting into it.  If it isn’t your type of music, why not give something new a try?  Hey, I listen everything except country. Sorry, that’s just where I draw the line. So, take some sound advise from me and give it a listen.  Have I steered you wrong before? Thanks for reading this week’s review, and Ill see you next week.
