Courtney’s Pull Box: Preview!

I was chatting it up with one of the associates at my local comic book shop, who informed me of a huge magalog (as they call it) called Previews. This big catalog features information about all of the comics and books that will be released within the next few months. I will be adding some of the comics featured in Previews into my pullbox, and here’s a quick preview of said comics before I review them!

Weird Detective:

weird detective 1SynopsisThe streets of New York have been plagued by a pattern of crimes too weird and bizarre for the average detective. Lurking in the evidence are shadows of loathsome horrors from beyond space and time, seeking to usher in the unimaginable evil of the Old Ones. And the only man capable of fighting against the unspeakable terrors isn’t a man at all. Detective Sebastian Greene is one of them—it takes a monster to catch a monster.

Price: $3.99

There is not a lot of art for this one, not online nor in the actual catalog, but from what I’ve seen so far, this art in comic looks really good. The premise of this comic also sounds great – I personally love crime and detective stories! This is going to be a miniseries spanning only five books. I’ve never read the writer’s other works, but I am optimistic and can’t wait to see what this series has to offer. This will also be my first introduction to Dark Horse Comics, which is turning 30-years-old in June. With three decades under their belt, I’m sure that they have at least one or two good stories.

DC Universe Rebirth Special #1

Synopsis“It all begins here. Do not skip to the last page. Do not let a friend or message board ruin this comic for you. The future (and the past) of the DC Universe starts here. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!”

Written by: Geoff Johns
Art by: Various artists, Gary Frank, Ivan Reis, Ethan Van Sciver, and Phil Jimenez
Published by: DC Comics
Release Date: May 25, 2016
Price: $2.99

I’m excited but also anxious for the rebirth of the DC universe. I was very disappointed with most of the stories featured in the New 52, especially Starfire’s story, which explained how she met Dick Grayson. A lot of the story arcs weren’t up to par for fans like myself, so I’m holding out hope that Rebirth will give us something much better than its predecessors.

The art for this cover looks amazing, as does the art for all the DC comics featured in Previews. Wonder Woman isn’t very cartoony – she looks like a real woman. Though when it comes to the Titans, they do look more cartoony, which is something that I wanted to see. the artists know when to make things look realistic and when not to.

Though this is probably really silly, I don’t like that little “Don’t let the message boards ruin it for you!” bit in the synoposis. Look… people want to know others’ opinions on the comic before they dive into it, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Everyone complained online about DC’s last remodeling, but they had every right to express their opinion. Be confident in your work, DC.

Batman Rebirth #1

Synopsis“Longtime Batman and Eisner Award-winning writer Scott Synder co-writes with rising-star writer Tom King! EVIL 365: Gotham City faces the threat of the Calender Man!”

Written by: Scott Snyder and Tom King
Art by: Mikel Janin
Published by: DC Comics
Release Date: June 1, 2016
Price: $2.99

I am a big fan of Batman, but I will admit that I don’t know a lot about each of his incarnations. I’m pretty excited to read this comic because Batman does kind of look like Batman V Superman‘s Batman (played by Ben Affleck) in this art style. There’s not much information about the actual comic and the writer in the preview, but I do hope that long time Batman fans (and people like myself) will be happy when the new Batman comic arrives at our comic book shops.

Wonder Woman Rebirth #1

Wonder-Woman-rebirthSynopsis: “After suffering an unimaginable loss, Wonder Woman must rebuild her mission as Earth’s ultimate protector and champion. DON’T MISS: New York times best selling writer Greg Rucka returns to Wonder woman with a tale that will forever alter the DC icon.”

Written by: Greg Ruka
Art by: Paulo Siqueira and Liam Sharp
Published by: DC Comics
Release Date: June 8, 2016
Price: $2.99

It’s hard to really tell it from this cover, but Wonder Woman looks so good in this comic. I love her costume design and her curls. She looks so amazing and I’m so excited to read this comic. Much like with every other DC character, I hope the writers do her justice, and I am hoping that she isn’t in a relationship with Superman in this one. I don’t know about you guys, but I personally like Wonder Woman single and focused. Either way, I’m really excited about what they are going to do with Wonder Woman, especially when they claim that they are going to alter her forever.

Batman #1

batman-1_0Synopsis” “I AM GOTHAM” Chapter One. No has ever stopped the Caped Crusader. Not The Joker. Not Two-Face. Not even the entire Justice League. But how does Batman confront a new hero who wants to save the city from the Dark Knight? CAN’T MISS: Superstar artist David Finch returns to the Dark Night alongside writer Tom King for this five-part storyline.”

Written by: Tom King
Art by: David Finch and Matt Banning
Published by: DC Comics
Release Date: June 15, 2016
Price: $2.99

Much like with the other Batman comic preview, I like the look of this comic. I hope that Batman’s story is well written in Rebirth, as I would hate to see DC release yet another disappointment. Much like with every other comic on this list, DC has not released much information about the actual story. I can only hope that Batman fans like this version.

Titans Rebirth #1

b060_-_titans_rebirth_tnsreb_cv1Synopsis“Friends. Teammates. Titans. Donna Troy, Garth, Lilith, and Nightwing were all that and more until a mysterious force erased their memories, forcing them to forget what they could accomplish together. Reunited with their memories returned, the Titans must destroy the interdimensional demon that broke them apart and threatens reality itself.”

Written by: Dan Abnett
Art by: Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: June 15, 2016
Price: $2.99

This is a version of the Titans that often isn’t seen anymore. With the popularization of Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans (which features the second generation of Teen Titans), the Titans have been more known by general audiences. The designs featured in this preview look really good, which is so surprise: all the characters so far have looked really nice and this one really is no exception. I’m excited for this team up, but I’m hoping that this comic will leave Titan fans with better taste in their mouth after having to deal with the current incarnation of the Teen Titans.

Wonder Woman #1

19.-Wonder-Woman-1Synopsis” “The Lies” Chapter One: Why has the lasso of truth stopped working for the Amazon Princess? Start down the rabbit hole as dark secrets from Wonder Woman’s past unravel her present!”

Written by: Greg Rucka
Art by: Liam Sharp
Published by: DC Comics
Release Date: June 22, 2016
Price: $2.99

There isn’t much of a description, but this preview left me wondering why Wonder Woman’s lasso isn’t working and what else is going on with the Amazonian princess. It’s intriguing, but also scary, because this story may change the basic premise of Wonder Woman and ruin her character. Much like with the other characters in Rebirth, I know I’m not alone in wanting to see a good portrayal of Wonder Woman.

She Wolf #1

SheWolf-01_cvrSynopsis: She Wolf is a surreal exploration in horror as the story follows a teenage girl who believes she’s been bitten by a savage werewolf. Soon after she begins to experience feverish nightmares that seamlessly bleed into her reality.

Written by: Rich Tommaso
Art by: Rich Tommaso
Published by: Image Comics
Release Date: June 22, 2016
Price: $3.99

There are a few pages of this comic featured in the Previews book, and from the looks of it, it seems to be really interesting. The main character is supposed to be a real human being, and it’s comforting to see that she actually looks like a person (she actually reminded me a mixture of some of my friends). The art featured in this comic is much different from Marvel and DC in that everything is more sharp and dynamic. Fingers crossed that the full comic is as good as the preview!

Sherlock: A Study in Pink #1

Sherlock_Manga_ASIP_01_Cover_ASynopsis: Holmes and Watson tackle brain-teasing crimes in modern-day London in this stunning manga, presented in its original right-to-left reading order, and in the full chapters as originally serialised! Meet Holmes and Watson for the first time…all over again!”

Written by: Steven Moffat
Art by: Jay
Published by: Titan Comics
Release Date: June 8, 2016
Price: $4.99

I love Sherlock Holmes, and as of writing this, I have seen and read almost twenty different versions of the detective. I wasn’t really shocked to see a manga version, and from what I’ve seen so far, the art is very odd – but in a good way. The artist was able to draw two very unique looking men very well in manga form. I joked when I saw the preview for this that Sherlock’s nose is very similar to Pearl’s from Steven Universe. The last manga I read is now older than I am, so I’m really excited to check this one out!

Stay tuned for my review of these comics, and leave your own impressions in the comments section!
