London. 1888. Blood, gore, and more: Jack the Ripper is terrorizing the town with a flurry of gruesome murders. Too bad there’s not a hero to save the city! Or is there? (Queue dramatic music!)
This week I watched and reviewed a Batman themed fan film by James Campbell called Ripper. Combining elements of classic Italian horror, historical monstrosities, and good ol’ fashioned comic book super heroes, Ripper has it all! Made by fans for fans, this project was made possible by enthusiastic IndieGoGo supporters and premiered February 1, 2016. At the time I watched the short (just a few days after it was released), it had already garnered over 31,000 views!
Do I recommend Ripper to you, GeekGirl World? Find out in my video review below:
The project was based on Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, a collection of tales based on a Victorian era Batman written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola with inks by P. Craig Russell. One of the things I love about historical fiction mash ups is that it makes the impossible seem possible! Considering Batman is the most realistic of all the heroes in the DC universe (he doesn’t have super powers, he’s just a skilled rich guy with epic resources), the story’s concept wasn’t far-fetched at all, and I was pleased to see Campbell’s team bring the story to life!
Watch Ripper and let us know what you think, GeekGirl World!
