Preview: Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con

Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con is coming up again this weekend!

This is the 4th annual convention for Amazing in Las Vegas, and this year they have moved away from their usual space at Southpoint Casino and are instead taking up residency at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The venue isn’t the only thing that’s different this year. Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con has decided to take their convention in a new direction, focusing on what Comic Con used to be about: comics.

Many comic conventions are criticized for using pop-culture guests as their main attraction, and it seems as if Amazing has decided to counter this trend by focusing primarily on comic writers and artists.

Comic guests for 2016 include comic book legends Chris Claremont and Kevin Eastman, Marvel artists Steve McNiven and Kenneth Rockafort, DC artists Phillip Tan and Tyler Kirkham, along with many others. The convention’s focus on comics is also reflected in their panel lineup, meaning that guests will have plenty of time to learn a thing or two from their favorite comic artist/writer.

On Saturday guests can join Phillip Tan for a look at the DC Universe according to Harley Quinn, as well as join Steve McNiven, Charles Soule and Jimmy Cheung as they discuss the world of Captain America. Sunday is officially kid’s day, and guests will be able to talk TMNT with Kevin Eastman and attend a couple panels featuring MLP artist Tony Fleecs and Phineas and Ferb’s Matt Nastos.

There will be a variety of costume contests and performances by The Library Bards all weekend long, and guests will have the opporunity to meet the the executive producer of AMC’s Preacher and get the first issue of the original comic for free!

If you’re going to be in Las Vegas this weekend, then make sure to put this on your list of geeky things to do! It’s not too late to grab your tickets.

Phoenix Comicon 2016: Wrap Up

This last weekend marked another successful Phoenix Comicon!

Running Thursday through Sunday, there were countless hours of programming and stars to meet and greet. Each year that I have attended, they have really taken to heart the suggestions of their guests from the previous year and changed how foot traffic flowed, where registration is held, and even where you can go to see your favorite media guests all in the hopes of making everything run more smoothly for each con-goer.

This year was not without its issues, of course

A downed network on Friday made registration a total mess, causing many to have to wait in line for several hours outside. Phoenix Comicon was very quick to address the problem, taking to social media to right the mishap.  Other than that one problem, the rest of the weekend appeared to continue on without a hitch.

Along with hours upon hours of panels, Phoenix Comicon was also host to two separate weddings: a Doctor Who themed one and a Zombie Apocalypse themed one. Many of PHXCC’s favorite panels returned for 2016, including P.U.G.S. and the Harry Potter Planetarium. Joining those favorites were newcomers Stream Team Podcast with several trivia panels and Blumhouse Productions with several horror themed panels. Both plan to return again next year.

For aspiring writers and lovers of books, PHXCC 2016 featured a newly laid out writing workshop schedule as well as an opportunity to drink with your favorite authors. There were also several opportunities during PHXCC to save a life with United Blood Services hosting a blood drive all weekend.

Check out the slideshow below for highlights of the weekend’s activities!

Phoenix Comicon 2016: Guests & Events

Phoenix Comicon is back again this year and it promises to be better than ever. With celebrity guests, artists, writers, amazing vendors, and plenty of after-hours activities, there is sure to be something for everyone at this convention.

This year will mark Phoenix Comicon’s 14th year, with each passing one getting bigger and better. The event will be June 2-5 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Media guests will include Sean Astin, Alex Kingston, Billie Piper, Mark Pellegrino, James Marsters, Timothy Omundson, Caity Lotz, and many more. Each media guest will have their own spotlight panel and  fans will have an opportunity to get a photo or autograph with them. Along with media guests there will be comic creators/artists including Basil Gogos, George Perez, Jae Lee, and Mark Brooks as well as authors like Kevin Hearne, Scott Sigler, and Sarah Remy.

Along with an amazing Cosplay Fashion Show, Steampunk Fashion Show, and Masquerade, the convention will be hosting a Geek Bridal Showcase! (Seeing as I am recently engaged, I am super interested in this event). All you geeky lovebirds out there will be able to contact Phoenix Comicon with all your wedding, renewing vows, or proposal needs!

If you’re the type that can still party it up after a long day on the convention floor, be sure to check out the One Party To Rule Them All presented by Blue Ribbon Army, Drinks with Authors, Geeks Who Drink Pub Trivia, or a stand-up comedy show. Don’t miss Jareth the Goblin King’s Masquerade Ball Friday night as well!

If you like to attend as many panels as you can (like I do), there is a full lineup of programming that can be found here. Once you’re logged in you can add them to your Conquest and easily access them from your mobile device. I already have a ton of conflicts and need to prioritize my panel schedule since there’s just too much great programming this year!

Whatever your interests be certain to not miss this year’s Phoenix Comicon! Tickets are now available, so don’t hesitate to grab yours while you can!

Wizard World: Vendor Spotlight

If you’re looking for some great artists and creators to fulfill all your geeky purchasing needs,  head into the Wizard World vendor hall and check out these amazing items!

candles

2016-03-19 15.58.28First up I found Lauren with Boonzy Arts who is based out of L.A. She has all kinds of incredible candles that smell delicious.  Her candles are inspired by her love of pop-culture which grew from her immense love of reading as a child.  Her “Wheel of Flame” candles are a unique idea she came up with and Kickstarted. Each scent can be used to
enhance your table-top gaming experience and comes with a random metal die. For instance, if your party is about to head into a cave to fight a dragon,  you can light the “Lair of the Dragon” candle to take the experience to a whole new level.  She also has pop-culture candles like “It Rubs the Lotion on It’s Skin” which smells like lotion , “Marshmallow Man” which is modeled after the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man,  and “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” which comes in a teacup! You can buy directly from her site also so make sure to check it out of you’re not in the Las Vegas area this weekend.

crafts
The next booth that caught my eye was Sara with My Faerietale because she has these 2016-03-19 16.00.05absolutely adorable pot people. She is Las Vegas based and you can only find her at conventions so make sure to come out!  She also has a love of pop-culture and a great motto of “I make what I like and I hope you like it too.” In addition to her pot people she also has an assortment of pins, magnets,  clocks and jewelry.  All the artwork is original from her daughter. Sara started at the Las Vegas Comic Expo in 2013 and now is doing between 12 and 15 conventions a year. I highly recommend stopping by her table and taking home your very own pot person.
petsI ran into Shakespeare’s Workshop (almost literally) with owner Summer Shakespeare who was absolutely delightful.  She is also based out of Las Vegas and has all sorts of 3-D prints,  custom costumes and hoodies, wigs, and the most incredible pet costumes.  She can be found on Etsy as well as on Periscope,  where you can actually watch her as she creates your custom item.

2016-03-19 18.26.42If you’re like me and can’t leave a con without picking up a new print (or 10) to adorn your walls, make sure to check out Lisa Hall with Hallustration. She was always into Star Wars growing up and has expanded her geeky interests into anime and now comic characters.  It was through attending other conventions that she learned she could put her artistic talents to work reimagening her favorite characters in her own style. Most of the prints are in digital media, although she very much enjoys traditional art as well. If you can check her out here at Wizard World,  but if you can’t you can check out her Etsy or next weekend she will be at Salt Lake Comic Con.

2016-03-19 18.27.31

If you’re looking for a new series,  I highly recommend checking out Katie Salidas. She is from Las Vegas and currently has two full,  6 book series and a third series that is just starting out.  Chronicles of the Uprising is a Hunger Games meets Interview with the Vampire meets Gladiator.  She says that although it has vampires in it,  they’re not what you would normally think of vampires.  She also has her Immortals series which is a paranormal romance. Both of those series you can read without having to wait for the next installment! Her newest series is Pretty Little Werewolf.  The synopses for the first book begins: “All Giselle ever wanted was a family… who can accept her for what she is, a werewolf. In a world where supernatural creatures are not out and proud, this has been a problem for 16 year old Giselle. A child of the system, she’s been bounced from home to home for as long as she can remember. As soon as the moon calls out her inner wolf, it’s back into the system she goes….” you can read the rest on her website if you aren’t able to visit her this weekend.

The multi-location convention is coming back to Las Vegas for its second year and will once again be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Featured guests include Jewel Staite (Firefly, Serenity, Warehouse 13, Stargate: Atlantis), Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks II, Mallrats), Sean Maguire (Once Upon A Time, Meet the Spartans), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead, Jumper, Mallrats), and Lori Petty (Tank Girl, Gotham, Orange is the New Black, A League of Their Own).

In addition to entertainment guests, the event also will host a vast array of authors, artists, creators, and cosplay guests. There will also be a full line-up of panels to attend where guests can ask their favorite actor or author questions and gain general knowledge on a variety of geeky subjects.

If you have never attended a comic convention, then I highly recommend attending Wizard World. Conventions are a great way to meet people like you who are into comics, fantasy and sci-fi! There will be amazing vendors to help you fill your home and dress your person with the best in all manner of geeky goods and wares (we will be highlighting a few of those vendors soon, so stay tuned). Opinion: The Last ‘Face Off’ Episode was Incredibly Sexist

Normally I do a recap of each Face Off episode, but I have been overly burdened by other responsibilities (especially since the show moved to Wednesday nights) and have not been able to write one for the past two weeks.

However, I am still watching Face Off each week, and I feel compelled to address something that I found a little disturbing in the latest episode.

The episode included a lot of gender swaps – and even racial swaps – that I found to be somewhat inappropriate, and while the race-swaps were readily addressed by the judges (who sent one artist home for his stereotypical interpretation of an Asian male), the most disturbing point happened during the creative process.

One of the female artists remarked that the body language of her model will help sell the fact that it is a guy (she turned a female model into a male), which sparked a laugh among the other female artists, who said that the model would need only to “adjust” herself a lot to come off as a guy.

This got a lot of laughter from both the female and male artists…with one exception. Walter seemed more than a little perturbed by the statement and sarcastically let out that “If I am not picking my nose, I’m adjusting myself. It’s all I can do as a guy.”

giphy

While the show panned to the other artists chuckling at this statement, it did not come off as a joke to me, the viewer.

This statement exemplifies the disdain we should all have for any gender stereotype, regardless of which gender it is directed to. I would venture to say that if the situation were flipped, and a male artist had made such a remark about a female stereotype, it would not have been chuckled at and dismissed. We are learning to be more aware of the things that are said and done towards women that are oppressive, but we also must have equal gusto about those things that are oppressive towards men, as well.

The fight for equality cannot be one-sided, and it can’t be something you go to bat for only if it impacts your gender/race/creed/religion/sexuality/etc.

Face Off: Wanted Dead or Alive

Face off is back! Season 10 has begun and we get a look at the new crop of hopefuls. Right off we start with the season’s first spotlight challenge. It consists of them being randomly paired off and choosing an inspiration ship to create a rogue alien bounty hunter. The seven teams then get to work designing their hunter and we get a better look at their individual personalities.

Glenn, Neville, and Ve are back as judges and appear to be pretty impressed with this season’s artists. Njoroge and Rob, Robert and Katie, and Jennifer and Mel are all safe this week. In the bottom is Yvonne and Greg and Johnny and Ant, leaving Melissa and Anna and Walter and Kaleb vying for the top look.

win

Melissa is the one that takes top look for her beautiful work on their hunter’s cowl and the first person to be sent home this season is Greg, who really didn’t do much of anything.

Nerdy Bound: The Fashion Awakens

If you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet, then shame on you! But for those of you who have, then what better way to celebrate this box office smash than by expressing your love of your favorite new character through fashion. I don’t believe there are any spoilers here, but just in case I’m going to err on the side of caution and say that if you really haven’t seen it, SPOILERS.

Caturday: I’m Ready For My Closeup

Every cat secretly (not-so-secretly) loves being the center of attention even if they sometimes pretend that they don’t. These cats are no exception, with some indulging the camera, and others shunning it.
