DIY ‘Pokémon Go’ Cosplay Tutorial!

Is it just us, or is the Pokémon Go female trainer outfit the most comfortable and functional cosplay outfit for Comic-Con ever?

  1. Comfortable sneakers (which TOTALLY look like Sketchers)? Check!
  2. Leggings? Check!
  3. Backpack for swag and snacks? Check!

Count. Us. In.

The concept of this outfit is simple enough, but for those of us inexperienced in the art of costume creation, recreating this super chic and comfy look can be a daunting task.

Lucky for us, cosplayer Ginny Di has our backs.

Ginny created her very own Pokémon Go trainer cosplay shortly after the game launched using colorful fabrics and a god-given gift with a sewing machine. Since then, the cosplayer has been flooded with commission requests from fellow trainers.

When I created my Pokémon Go trainer’s costume at light speed the weekend after the game was released, I had no idea that it would explode into thousands of new followers and dozens of commission requests. Unfortunately, I’m really not the commissioning type — I barely have enough time to sew for myself as it is! But what I can do for all the Pokétrainer hopefuls out there is walk you through how I put together my costume, so you can take a stab at your own! – Ginnydi.com

Welp, I guess we’re on our own! Here’s what you’ll need to recreate Ginny’s look:

  • White baseball cap
  • Black gloves
  • Black yoga pants
  • Black shoes with white soles
  • Blue fabric (~2 yds)
  • Zippers: Blue (invisible, ~20″), Yellow or white (separating, ~6-10″)
  • Dark blue fabric marker
  • White fabric (~1 yd)
  • Yellow fabric (~1 yd)
  • Yellow ribbed tank top
  • Ribbon: Yellow 1″, black 1/2″, lavender 1/4″
  • Black fabric (~1/4″ yd)
  • Light grey & dark grey fabric (~1/4 yd each)
  • 1 sheet craft foam
  • Yellow and white acrylic paint
  • 1″ sew-on snap
  • Blue, yellow, white, black, grey, and lavender thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Hot glue gun

Those looking to create a cosplay with a different trainer color scheme need only to substitute the fabric colors!

Unfortunately Ginny’s tutorial does not cover how to create your trainer’s backpack, but creating one shouldn’t be too difficult. Just acquire a plain black or white backpack and decorate it with fabric and markers. Buying (or re-purposing) a backpack is kind of cheating, but it sure as hell beats trying to create a backpack with structural integrity.

After the costume has been created, finish the look by accessorizing it with a pokéball and a plush version of your favorite Pokémon!

Bonus points if you can get your hands on a pokédex.

Ready to recreate this look? Check out Ginny’s full tutorial to get started!

Her Universe Fashion Show: See the Looks!

Geek couture was front and stage at San Diego Comic-Con for the third annual Her Universe Fashion Show!

The fashion show was hosted by actress and Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein, who showed up to the event wearing an incredible LEGO dress designed after her Star Wars: The Clone Wars character, Ahsoka Tano.

The dress was created by LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya and fashion designer Andrew MacLaine. It was made with over 10000 LEGO bricks and weighed a whopping 25 pounds, making this dress the ultimate geeky workout.

But even more impressive than Ashley’s dress were the creations of the contestants in the fashion show.

Each contestant competed to win the honor of designing their own fashion collection with Her Universe. The winner’s collection will be exclusive to Hot Topic – Her Universe’s retail partner for SDCC three years running.

After all was said and done, two winners were crowned as geek couture goddesses by the judges and the audience:

Judges Winner: Imperator Furiosa by Hannah Kent

Audience Winner: Marauder’s Map by Camille Falciola

The Remaining Contenders:

Voting may have taken place on the main stage, but a third contestant is still eligible to win the grand prize! Check out the remaining contenders in the gallery below, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite look!

Voting ends at midnight (Pacific Time) on Thursday, August 11th.

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 1 Recap

San Diego Comic-Con is officially a wrap! There has been too much news to wrap our heads around in the wake of the convention, so first, let’s take a deep breath, pace ourselves, and take a good look at all the goodies that came out of day 1 of the 4 day mega geek event!

Disney’s Moana will not feature a love interest

Disney’s newest “princess” will be an independent woman who don’t need no man!

Moana directors John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid) told San Diego Comic-Con panel-goers that the film’s protagonist, Moana, will not be looking for love in her debut film, but rather herself.

The CG-animated featured film takes place 2000 years ago in the Pacific Ocean. It stars Moana, an adventurous teenager who, with the help of the demigod Maui (voiced by The Rock), sails out on a daring mission to save her people.

Moana hits theaters November 23.

Marvel reveals Luke Cage debut trailer

Jessica Jones’ unbreakable love interest is getting his own series, and now we have the trailer for it!

Netflix’s Marvel series are notorious for their slow releases, but Mike Colter (who plays Luke Cage) confirmed during the Luke Cage panel that the series will be coming to Netflix on September 30.

…& a first look at Iron Fist

Loras Tyrell may have gotten the short end of the stick during Season 6 of Game of Thrones, but the actor who played him, Finn Jones, is doing just fine.

Jones will star in Netflix’s latest Marvel series as Danny Rand (aka Iron Fist), a close friend of Luke Cage, a member of The Defenders, and an incognito martial-arts guru (to sum it up extremely vaguely).

No official release date has been released for the series.

…& the first teaser for The Defenders

All those Marvel and Netflix trailers have been leading up to one thing: The Defenders.

This new Avengers style series will star Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Plus some of the subcharacters we know and love from our heroes respective series.

No release date has been announced, but the heroes will be uniting in 2017.

Daredevil is getting a third season

In addition to these trailers, Marvel also confirmed that Daredevil season 3 will indeed be happening (thanks Joe Quesada!), but a release date has yet to be announced.

Snowden trailer revealed

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Edward Snowden in Snowden, a theatrical representation of the real story of the CIA’s most infamous whistleblower.

Shailene Woodley co-stars alongside Gordon-Levitt, with Oliver Stone directing.

Snowden hits theater September 16, 2016.

First look at Justice League Action

Featuring over 150 DC characters, Cartoon Network’s upcoming animated series is poised be one of the expansive representations of the DC Universe to date. Each episode of Justice League Action will include two 11-minute standalone series featuring varying characters from DC’s gallery of rogues and heroes.

Cartoon Network has not yet announced an official release date for the series.

MacGyver is coming back to CBS

…Though probably not in the way you imagined.

CBS shared brand new footage of their rebooted, modernized take of the classic 80’s show during the CBS panel.

Lucas Till plays MacGyver, with George Eads starring as his sidekick, Jack Dalton.

The pilot episode will be directed by James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring, Furious 7), so expect this series to be action packed!

Macgyver airs this fall on CBS.

Teen Wolf to conclude after season 6

Sorry, Teen Wolf fans… MTV confirmed during SDCC that their popular series will conclude after season 6. To brighten the mood, here is the official teaser trailer for the latest season:

Stay tuned for more SDCC goodies!

Preview: Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con

Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con is coming up again this weekend!

This is the 4th annual convention for Amazing in Las Vegas, and this year they have moved away from their usual space at Southpoint Casino and are instead taking up residency at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The venue isn’t the only thing that’s different this year. Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con has decided to take their convention in a new direction, focusing on what Comic Con used to be about: comics.

Many comic conventions are criticized for using pop-culture guests as their main attraction, and it seems as if Amazing has decided to counter this trend by focusing primarily on comic writers and artists.

Comic guests for 2016 include comic book legends Chris Claremont and Kevin Eastman, Marvel artists Steve McNiven and Kenneth Rockafort, DC artists Phillip Tan and Tyler Kirkham, along with many others. The convention’s focus on comics is also reflected in their panel lineup, meaning that guests will have plenty of time to learn a thing or two from their favorite comic artist/writer.

On Saturday guests can join Phillip Tan for a look at the DC Universe according to Harley Quinn, as well as join Steve McNiven, Charles Soule and Jimmy Cheung as they discuss the world of Captain America. Sunday is officially kid’s day, and guests will be able to talk TMNT with Kevin Eastman and attend a couple panels featuring MLP artist Tony Fleecs and Phineas and Ferb’s Matt Nastos.

There will be a variety of costume contests and performances by The Library Bards all weekend long, and guests will have the opporunity to meet the the executive producer of AMC’s Preacher and get the first issue of the original comic for free!

If you’re going to be in Las Vegas this weekend, then make sure to put this on your list of geeky things to do! It’s not too late to grab your tickets.

Will you be attending Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con? Let us know in the comments!

Phoenix Comicon 2016: Wrap Up

This last weekend marked another successful Phoenix Comicon!

Running Thursday through Sunday, there were countless hours of programming and stars to meet and greet. Each year that I have attended, they have really taken to heart the suggestions of their guests from the previous year and changed how foot traffic flowed, where registration is held, and even where you can go to see your favorite media guests all in the hopes of making everything run more smoothly for each con-goer.

This year was not without its issues, of course

A downed network on Friday made registration a total mess, causing many to have to wait in line for several hours outside. Phoenix Comicon was very quick to address the problem, taking to social media to right the mishap.  Other than that one problem, the rest of the weekend appeared to continue on without a hitch.

Along with hours upon hours of panels, Phoenix Comicon was also host to two separate weddings: a Doctor Who themed one and a Zombie Apocalypse themed one. Many of PHXCC’s favorite panels returned for 2016, including P.U.G.S. and the Harry Potter Planetarium. Joining those favorites were newcomers Stream Team Podcast with several trivia panels and Blumhouse Productions with several horror themed panels. Both plan to return again next year.

For aspiring writers and lovers of books, PHXCC 2016 featured a newly laid out writing workshop schedule as well as an opportunity to drink with your favorite authors. There were also several opportunities during PHXCC to save a life with United Blood Services hosting a blood drive all weekend.

Check out the slideshow below for highlights of the weekend’s activities!

NYCC Introduces New Ticketing Process to Deter Scalpers

Scalpers and late deciders beware! New York Comic Con has introduced a new ticketing process.

Convention-goers are now required to fill out an online Fan Verification Profile between May 20 and June 13 in order to be eligible to attend NYCC. Those who do not fill out this form will be barred from purchasing tickets.

Under the new rules, fans purchasing more than one ticket to NYCC must have a profile created for each person who wishes to attend the event, and there will be a purchase limit of only one ticket per profile per day.

NYCC officials hope that this new ticketing system will deter and eliminate scalping, a process where businesses and individuals purchase tickets in bulk and resell them for astronomically higher prices.

“This is being done with you in mind and the hope that more of you will get the opportunity to experience NYCC,” Show Manager Lance Fensterman explained in an official press release.

In addition to this new ticketing system, NYCC has decided to do away with VIP tickets for 2016. Fans will still have the option of purchasing 3-day passes.

An official date for ticket sales has yet to be announced, but verified fans will be notified via email 48 hours prior to their release.

NYCC returns to the Javitz Center in New York City October 6, 2016, – 9, 2016.

Calling All Designers! Submissions Are Now Open for the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic-Con

Last year, GeekGirl World attended the Her Universe Fashion show, and it was a spectacular event for geek couture and nerd fashion! Her Universe and fashion retail partner Hot Topic will be hosting their premiere geek couture runway fashion show again this year on July 21 at 6pm at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel during San Diego Comic-Con. The third annual Her Universe Fashion show will once again offer fans and aspiring designers the chance to submit their pop culture inspired designs to compete on the runway for the unique opportunity to design their very own collection exclusively for Hot Topic stores. The Her Universe Fashion Show has been one of the biggest special events at Comic-Con since it’s inception, and this year it is poised to be even bigger as they make bold strides to further enhance the experience of the show.

The submission process is NOW OPEN for up and coming designers 18 years or older. One of the biggest changes this year will be the opportunity for designers in the Southern California area to submit their designs to Her Universe and Hot Topic judges at the Hollywood and Highland location of Hot Topic in Los Angeles on April 23, starting at 10am. If you don’t live in the Southern California area, or can’t make it to the open call, no worries, because ALL designers (including those who attend the open call) will still need to submit their entries online. However, online submissions will now have the additional option of adding a video explanation to present their idea to the judges. Get those submissions ready, folks! The deadline for ALL applications (including those planing to attend in-person at the open call in LA) is 11:59pm PST on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Submit your designs for consideration here! GOOD LUCK!

Original sketches from last year’s winning fashion show designers, Kelly Cercone (Joker’s New Look) and Leetal Platt (Usagi’s Transformation). The design competition submission process for the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show is now is open for designers to submit their own women’s fashion designs based on anything that is celebrated at Comic-Con, original or inspired by popular media

Once the call for submissions closes, twenty-five designers will chosen and notified on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. These twenty-five finalists will be given the opportunity to compete on the runway in the Her Universe Fashion Show at SDCC for the grand prize. The entire process from start to finish will be filmed as part of a docu-series set to air on the new Comic-Con HQ channel. Plus this year, in addition to the judges choice winner and audience choice winner at the show, a third winner will be selected by the viewers on the Comic-Con HQ channel at home!

“My favorite part of The Her Universe Fashion Show has been getting to know all of the designers behind the scenes…With the new docu-series on Comic-Con HQ, fans will get to know each designer and follow their process and journey to the runway at SDCC. There are so many talented designers out there that just need the opportunity and platform to showcase their skills. I encourage fans to submit and no experience is necessary!”

– Ashley Eckstein, Her Universe Founder

Wizard World: Vendor Spotlight

If you’re looking for some great artists and creators to fulfill all your geeky purchasing needs,  head into the Wizard World vendor hall and check out these amazing items!

candles

2016-03-19 15.58.28First up I found Lauren with Boonzy Arts who is based out of L.A. She has all kinds of incredible candles that smell delicious.  Her candles are inspired by her love of pop-culture which grew from her immense love of reading as a child.  Her “Wheel of Flame” candles are a unique idea she came up with and Kickstarted. Each scent can be used to
enhance your table-top gaming experience and comes with a random metal die. For instance, if your party is about to head into a cave to fight a dragon,  you can light the “Lair of the Dragon” candle to take the experience to a whole new level.  She also has pop-culture candles like “It Rubs the Lotion on It’s Skin” which smells like lotion , “Marshmallow Man” which is modeled after the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man,  and “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” which comes in a teacup! You can buy directly from her site also so make sure to check it out of you’re not in the Las Vegas area this weekend.

crafts
The next booth that caught my eye was Sara with My Faerietale because she has these 2016-03-19 16.00.05absolutely adorable pot people. She is Las Vegas based and you can only find her at conventions so make sure to come out!  She also has a love of pop-culture and a great motto of “I make what I like and I hope you like it too.” In addition to her pot people she also has an assortment of pins, magnets,  clocks and jewelry.  All the artwork is original from her daughter. Sara started at the Las Vegas Comic Expo in 2013 and now is doing between 12 and 15 conventions a year. I highly recommend stopping by her table and taking home your very own pot person.
petsI ran into Shakespeare’s Workshop (almost literally) with owner Summer Shakespeare who was absolutely delightful.  She is also based out of Las Vegas and has all sorts of 3-D prints,  custom costumes and hoodies, wigs, and the most incredible pet costumes.  She can be found on Etsy as well as on Periscope,  where you can actually watch her as she creates your custom item.

2016-03-19 18.26.42If you’re like me and can’t leave a con without picking up a new print (or 10) to adorn your walls, make sure to check out Lisa Hall with Hallustration. She was always into Star Wars growing up and has expanded her geeky interests into anime and now comic characters.  It was through attending other conventions that she learned she could put her artistic talents to work reimagening her favorite characters in her own style. Most of the prints are in digital media, although she very much enjoys traditional art as well. If you can check her out here at Wizard World,  but if you can’t you can check out her Etsy or next weekend she will be at Salt Lake Comic Con.

2016-03-19 18.27.31

If you’re looking for a new series,  I highly recommend checking out Katie Salidas. She is from Las Vegas and currently has two full,  6 book series and a third series that is just starting out.  Chronicles of the Uprising is a Hunger Games meets Interview with the Vampire meets Gladiator.  She says that although it has vampires in it,  they’re not what you would normally think of vampires.  She also has her Immortals series which is a paranormal romance. Both of those series you can read without having to wait for the next installment! Her newest series is Pretty Little Werewolf.  The synopses for the first book begins: “All Giselle ever wanted was a family… who can accept her for what she is, a werewolf. In a world where supernatural creatures are not out and proud, this has been a problem for 16 year old Giselle. A child of the system, she’s been bounced from home to home for as long as she can remember. As soon as the moon calls out her inner wolf, it’s back into the system she goes….” you can read the rest on her website if you aren’t able to visit her this weekend.
