Trailer for New ‘Doom’ Game Hits E3, is Super Violent

To get a jump on this year’s E3 conference, Bethesda Softworks released a trailer for their upcoming Doom sequel at their pre-show conference!

Lucky for us, it was a combination of video and game play because they do not skimp on the gore. Check it out for yourself:

The trailer gives us the same first-person perspective Doom fans know and love and piles on all the surprise creatures, demons, hellfire, and chainsaws you can handle. Bethesda has yet to mention any kind of multiplayer facet to the game, but they say we can expect a new feature called “Doom Snapmap” which allows players to make game maps or even tweak the game’s rules to their liking while they play. So awesome!

While this title is definitely going to be more than my anxiety can handle, it’s sure to be a hit with all you first-person gore fans out there – and those of you who have been eagerly awaiting news on all things Doom. Look for the release in spring 2016 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

Nintendo Partners with Universal Parks & Resorts!

We will soon be seeing Nintendo-themed attractions at Universal Studios theme parks!

Universal Parks & Resorts recently announced that they will be partnering with Nintendo and integrating aspects of the gaming giant’s world into their parks.

Universal said the following in regard to the partnership in their official PR release:

Universal theme parks offer incredibly popular, innovative themed family entertainment experiences based on compelling stories and characters – using powerful storytelling and innovative technology. Nintendo has created remarkable and imaginative worlds filled with captivating stories and beloved characters.

Now, for the first time, those stories and characters will be brought to life in entirely new ways—only at Universal theme parks.

There is no word yet on how they plan to integrate the world of Nintendo into the theme parks, but the potential is there for something truly incredible.

It is quite possible that they will transform an entire section of one of their existing theme parks into a Nintendo area, similar to what they did with the absolutely incredible Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. Just imagine an interactive Super Mario Bros. ride, a Mario Kart themed go-kart track, or an interactive Legend of Zelda journey.

And if any Universal Studios higher-ups in development are reading this right now, just know that I am available to think up some more amazing ideas for you! …Paid, naturally.

GeekGirl World will keep you updated as new news on this partnership is released!

What Nintendo goodies do you think they should include in the parks? Let us know in the comments below!

NYCC Tickets Available for Sale Tomorrow

Tickets for New York Comic Con will be going on sale tomorrow, May 13th, at 12:00 pm EST!

The annual four-day event will be held this year from October 8 – 11, 2015 at the Javits Center in New York City.

John Rhys Davies (Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Lord of the Rings) and Jewel Staite (Firefly) are among those confirmed in attendance as celebrity guests, and, of course, they will joined by plenty of comic spotlight guests! The list of guests is sure to get longer as the months progress. After all, it is only May!

While NYCC is not quite as popular or massive as San Diego Comic Con, tickets are still sure to sell out equally as fast for the event.

Hopeful attendees last year were outraged when 3-Day passes to the event sold out in minutes on the event’s website, only to show up immediately on eBay and various ticket sites for incredibly inflated prices.

Moral of the story here: get your tickets before those horrible, horrible scalpers do! Seriously, how do those guys sleep at night?

Will you be in attendance this year? Let us know in the comments below!

Wizard World Las Vegas – Weekend in Review

Wizard World Comic Con made its debut here in Las Vegas at the end of April and I couldn’t have been more excited! I had followed the Wizard World cons before hearing they were headed to Vegas but never had an opportunity to attend. For years I hoped Vegas would make it onto their more than 20+ con location roster and this year was it! I would consider myself an average con-goer who enjoys a little of everything when attending a convention and it is always enjoyable when a con has more than enough to offer.

One of the most important aspects is the guests a con gives you access to and Wizard World did not disappoint! I was able to meet some faves from The Walking Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Sleepy Hollow, the WWE, Heroes, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I absolutely loved getting selfie pics with Milo Ventimiglia who is a complete goofball as well as the amazing Tom Mison who is so sweet and soft spoken, it’s no wonder he causes hearts to melt. I also had the opportunity to spend a good deal of time the the greatest Power Ranger of all time, Jason David Frank. And while there were a couple last minute cancellations, I have learned to expect it as filming schedules change; there is just no way to predict something like that.

Another important part of a great con is the vendor floor. Wizard World had one of the best layouts on the vendor floor that I’ve ever seen. With this being only their first year in Vegas, it was easy to see they were veterans when it came to crowd flow and schematics. The exhibit floor map was so easy to follow, I was able to locate the vendors I look forward to seeing at each con I go to with ease and managed to snag some of their newest prints! It was so nice to be able to walk through an exhibit hall and have the room to stop and really look at all the amazing items for sale without feeling like you were in someone else’s way or crammed into a corner. This was definitely not for a lock of attendance, as there were so many people everywhere, but because the Las Vegas Convention Center they chose as their location has plenty of room to make the aisles wide and the space comfortable.

My personal favorite part of a comic con is the panels. I love when there is an ample amount of programming to keep you busy the whole time. Wizard World offered a wide variety of panels and programming including gaming tournaments, intros into writing, cosplay, creative workshops, social injustices within comic books, the impact of women in today’s fandoms, as well as Q&As with the media guests. I had the opportunity to attend many of these panels, including the ones focused on women in fandom, the Q&As with Tom Mison, Milo Ventimiglia, James Marsters, Arthur Darville, and Robert Englund, as well as a couple on cosplay and the costume contest. This is the first local con that I feel has had an adequate amount of programming for the entire duration of the event. In fact, there were a couple of times I had to choose between multiple panels I wanted to go to.

Overall I am excited for the return of Wizard World next year, I know it will be just as awesome. Wizard World did an excellent job in making sure everything ran smoothly, there was plenty of options for food to fuel you throughout the day, and never was there a dull moment. I am impressed with the quality of presenters for their panels, the amazing vendors, as well as the unique aspects of the Wizard World Comic Con.

Wizard World Las Vegas Announcement!

Don’t miss out on an exciting convention coming to Las Vegas for the first time! Wizard World Comic Con will be at the Las Vegas Convention Center starting Friday, April 24, 2015. I am so excited to attend this event and it’s sure to be a great time for all!

Some highlights are to include Q & As with Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead), and Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes and, most recently, Gotham!!!). There will also be more than 50 panels that run the gamut, like industry insight with special effects makeup artists like Fon Davis; learning how to write comics with Steven Grant, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez and Chelle Dey; going behind the scenes of Furious 7 with Noel Gugliemi, Caesar Garcia and Jon Lee Brody; meet and greets with Jason David Frank; and the stars of A&E’s Epic Ink!!! There will also be an adult’s cosplay contest Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. that I will for sure be covering, as well as a children’s contest Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm.

A full list of Wizard World Comic Con Las Vegas programming is available here. Will you be there?

Jurassic World’s Park Website is Incredibly Awesome

Universal has released an official website for the fictitious park featured in Jurassic World, giving us all a sad reminder that we still don’t have theme parks with actual dinosaurs.

But reality aside, the website is actually pretty amazing. It mirrors the website style of those of other theme parks, offering ticket packages, outlying show times, and listing exhibits, restaurants, and lodging opportunities.

Of course those parks don’t have freakin’ dinosaurs.

The website provides information and fun facts about the animals showcased in Jurassic World, including the T-Rex, who is noted to be 25 years old.

This means that the Rex that will appear in Jurassic World may just be our favorite jeep and lawyer munching friend that starred in the first Jurassic Park film.

It seems that the only attraction the park is missing is a close encounter with Chris Pratt, but that’s something we should have no problem conjuring up in our fantasies.

Jurassic World even has a Margaritaville! Say what?!

Jurassic-World-Site-580x329

The disappointment that this isn’t real is almost too much to bear.

But while we may not be seeing real dinosaurs anytime in the near future (or ever), all hope of having a Jurassic World experience isn’t lost.

Jurassic World will, without a doubt, make a killing at the box office. This would create a great opportunity for Universal Studios theme parks to create more modern Jurassic Park themed areas, bringing in patrons who are fans of the film.

Many Universal Studios theme parks have Jurassic Park themed areas already, but based on my own experience with Universal Studios Orlando, those attractions are dated, featuring underwhelming animatronics that have been there since the 1990’s.

But I suppose Universal Studios Orlando is close to being Jurassic World in at least one regard: they already have a Margaritaville.

Let us know what you thought of the website in the comments below!

Google Glass Isn’t Dead. It’s Just Molting!

Google Glass

The tech world has been in a tiny uproar, sounding the call of doom and gloom ever since Google made the announcement that it will be ending the Google Glass Explorers Program, which will effectively halt sales of the mobile computer eyewear product. While many have predicted that this is the end of the idea that people should be able to wear computers on their faces, others (including this author), are pointing out that they are clearly not reading the post in its entirety.

Google GlassWhile the Google Glass Explorers Program will definitely end on January 19, The program will be moving out of the Google [x] development department into its own standalone division under the watchful eye Nest CEO, Tony Fadell. For those of you who don’t know, Google purchased Nest last year for a whopping $3.2 billion. So the guy who has been at the forefront of home automation technology, and was responsible for the iPod at Apple, is now going to bring the struggling product under his innovative wing (yes, pun fully intended).
Even though the product has been largely derided, and banned from being worn inside a number of businesses, Fadell is still optimistic about its potential success, offering this The Verge, “Early Glass efforts have broken ground and allowed us to learn what’s important to consumers and enterprises alike. I’m excited to be working with Ivy to provide direction and support as she leads the team and we work together to integrate those learnings into future products.”
Ivy Ross is the leader of the development team who will be reporting directly to Fadell. Plans for a more affordable version of the product for the average consumer, and the development of new apps are currently under way. Cheer up everyone! The future of wearable face tech seems pretty sound. All I ask for is a GeekGirl World Pink Edition, and Tony if you are reading this, that’s hex color #e84974!

Disney Lends Its Characters To Young Coders Campaign While Barbie Gives Us A Lesson In Her Irrelevance

As part of Computer Science Education Week from December 8-14, Code.org is partnering with Disney on a mission to get kids interested in coding.

With a new tutorial titled “Artist with Anna and Elsa,” young coders will be introduced to practical coding concepts by the most popular characters from the House of Mouse right now.

IMG_3151.PNG
Level 6 of the Frozen inspired coding tutorial

Capitalizing on the popularity of the blockbuster Frozen with this tutorial is only the beginning for Code.org, which is in their second year of their “Hour of Code” Campaign. The tutorial will include guest lectures from leading women in tech in an effort to promote computer science industry careers among young girls.

This is a huge departure from Mattel’s stab at reaching young female minds by with their 2010 Random House publication called “Barbie: I Can Be a Computer Engineer.”

In this addition to the series of books that explore Barbie’s endless career choices, we are introduced to a Barbie enthusiastic about designing a game. However, she makes a point of telling Skipper that of course she has to have her guy friends code it for her, because she is only working on the design. Then, there is a subsequent incident where Barbie doesn’t realize she has a virus that has crippled her computer until Skipper offers up the suggestion.

IMG_3150.JPG
Barbie implying that girls can’t code and designers are useless in one well placed laughing comment.

Furthering the idea that young girls can do anything, as long as it’s not too technical and doesn’t require logic, this book also reduces the importance of a designer’s role to just making things look pretty. Such a simple task that even an airhead like Barbie (who has been an astronaut, by the way) can do it! Mattel has since apologized and the book has been pulled from Amazon.

Thankfully for the sake of young minds, especially young female minds, Disney’s partnership with Code.org doesn’t stop with this tutorial. The media and entertainment giant has pledged $100,000 to Code.org and will host “Hour of Code” events in the US and Canada.

To check out the tutorial and learn more about Code.org, visit Code.org/frozen

How to earn money with apps

It may only be October, but the holiday’s are going to be here sooner than we know it, guys. I’m sure many of our wallets cringe at the sight of Christmas lights every year, so ease their suffering and prepare early! And no, that doesn’t have to mean working overtime and collecting lint-covered pennies that have been stuck in the couch cushions for who-knows-how-long. Your smartphone can be a source of income, and here’s three legitimate (and may I add, FREE), safe apps you can find in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store that make it possible:

Courtesy of Shopkick.comSHOPKICK

We’ve all seen those advertisements: “Want to get paid to shop? Click Here!” A tempting dream, but of course we know it’s too good to be true.

But Shopkick might just be the closest thing. This app allows you to “check in” to select stores (including Target, Macy’s, Best Buy and American Eagle) from your smart phone and collect “kicks”, which when added up translate into gift cards!

Pretty awesome, right?

And it doesn’t stop there. You can collect even more kicks by scanning barcodes in select stores and can even get kicks for purchases you make by syncing your credit or debit card with the app.

CHECKPOINTS

You can easily make this app your best friend during a trip to the grocery store. Checkpoints, in a similar fashion to Shopkick, allows you to scan a variety items including ice cream, kitty liter and laundry detergent for points and coins. The points can be banked and redeemed for gift cards, while the coins can be used to play mini in-app games which give you the opportunity to win even more coins, including a jackpot of 100,000 points.

APPTRAILERS

The premise is eImage courtesy of bubblews.comasy: watch trailers, get points, and redeem those points for gift cards or PayPal credit.

On select trailers, there even is the option to download the app (don’t worry, they’re free) for more points, and you can gain even more by leaving a tip on said app. For every 3 tips you do, you earn 500 points – essentially 50 cents.

It’s very easy to get $10 within only a few days of downloading the app by taking advantage of the offers and by getting tip bonuses, but after that earning points drastically slows down. But if you stick with it, then over time it’ll pay off – literally.

Have you tried any of these apps or want to know more? Leave a comment!

Former Zynga Executive Launches New Social Gaming Platform

tapzen-logo

TapZen launched today, headed up by Zynga’s former Chief Creative Officer, Mike Verdu. TapZen will focus mainly on tablet gaming, but will be combining features popularized in the free-to-play online gaming model developed by Zynga. Verdu has not completely distanced himself from the declining Zynga (who saw shares drop to $3.19 at the close of the Nasdaq on April 30, 2013). With a $10 million investment from his former employer, Verdu promises that TapZen will allow Zynga to “take advantage of any breakthrough we make.”

There is little information available on the new company, which began posting job openings on their new website. However, Verdu stated his motivation for leaving Zynga and committing to the start-up was, “To be reminded what it’s like to create something as fast as you can and work with a small team of people you adore and trust — there’s nothing like that,” Verdu said in an interview. “It would have been hard to figure out what they could have done to keep me.”

Verdu is not alone in his sentiments as to why he choose to leave behind the large powerhouse of Zynga, and form his own new smaller company. This way of thinking is indicative of the start-up culture that has emerged around online and tablet gaming in recent years with more and more creative designers choosing to go the independent route rather than devote their talents to larger companies.
