Movie Review: Fantastic Four

I could say the best thing about the new Fantastic Four movie was seeing the Marvel intro come before Twentieth Century Fox flashed across the screen. Or, I could say that the best thing about the new Fantastic Four movie was watching the green band version of the Deadpool trailer and the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer in the previews. But no, there isn’t anything redeeming about this movie. Not even Kate Mara inexplicably showing up periodically in a wig worse than Jessica Alba’s in the previous versions of Fantastic Four could save this movie. (Seriously, the wig was bad and disturbing because it didn’t match her hair in other scenes at all) Not even Reg E. Cathey chewing the scenery like a pro as Franklin Storm could save this movie. Miles Teller and Jamie Bell seem confused as to who they are supposed to be in this movie, and while Michael B. Jordan does shine a bit in his role as Johnny Storm, you have to ask yourself (just like the characters do at one point), “Why is he here?” The movie is just slow and dull. There is nothing compelling about this origins story, which is supposed to be based on the Mark Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, and Adam Kubert Ultimate Fantastic Four comic.

Without spoiling it for those who will still want to go see it regardless of what anyone tells them, let’s just say that clocking in at an hour and 40 minutes makes this movie an hour and a half too long. If you have to have more than two title cards in a movie to guide your audience through the narrative, then you are spending way too much time on things that don’t matter, and not enough on situations that could have been compelling and engaging. This retooling of the origins story fell so flat partly due to lack of chemistry between the four main characters. First of all, Ben Grimm is just the happy accident along for the ride, and Sue Storm is the innocent bystander who is too late to save some drunk boys from doing something stupid. There is no brotherly/sisterly love between Sue and Johnny Storm, and being adopted is not an excuse. They do not interact as two people who were raised by the same man in the same house, but more like two kids who barely knew each other in study hall. Sue and Reed have more of a brotherly/sisterly bond than the Storm siblings do. Or was that an attempt at romance? If so, there was more romantic tension between Ben and Reed than between Reed and Sue. One thing they did get right, Victor von Doom’s mild attachment to Sue came off completely creepy and stalkerish. All of this leads up to our big bad finally arriving on screen, and when he does, he has an absurd power level that makes the subsequent obligatory “We work better as a team” speech and approximately seven minute first and last battle, hardly plausible.

I would say save your money, because I’ve seen the Syfy channel make better weekend disaster movies than this big budget comics reboot. The story was so disjointed that even the manufactured emotional situations did nothing to convince anyone in the audience to give a damn either way about what was going to happen to this team. Not surprising at all, director Josh Trank is completely distancing himself from his responsibility for the train wreck that arrived on screen, saying the following in a tweet that he later removed for fear he might have just ruined his last chance for any career in Hollywood:

A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.

But luckily for us, the internet is forever, and the screenshot lives on.

His sour grapes over producers stepping in after his reportedly erratic behavior aren’t an explanation either, but directors have been disavowing films since the dawn of time, so it’s totally not unexpected. The real unexpected tragedy here is that this film had flashes of what could have been a great movie and a great reboot to the iconic “first family” of Marvel. Instead, it looks like all the good bits were in the trailers, and the rest just serves as a yawn-worthy time-wasting experience.

Will Channing Tatum Leave ‘Gambit’? We Have the Official Word!

We recently discussed the rumor that Channing Tatum was leaving Gambit, a project that was pretty much his idea.

Many people across the internet rejoiced at the idea, while others were left disappointed that the hunky star of 21 Jump Street was leaving the project. But with the rumors being, well, rumors, nobody could know for sure what the hell was going to happen.

But now we have official word regarding Tatum’s status with Gambit: He will be starring in the film!

The Hollywood Reporter was first to break this exclusive news, and, according to their sources, those rumors that divided the internet into pro-Tatum and anti-Tatum camps did hold some merit afterall.

Sources say that Tatum and the studio actually did hit a snag during negotiations, but Tatum’s role was never in any real danger as the actor had already invested himself as both an actor and a producer for Gambit.

He even made a surprise appearance at Fox’s X-Men panel at Comic-Con in July, which pretty much solidified him in the role.

With Tatum confirmed, Gambit is now well on its way to becoming a huge part of the X-Men Universe. What that part will grow to be, only time can tell.

Gambit is being produced by 20th Century Fox and is an X-Men spin off movie. The film hits theaters October 2016.

Are you excited that Tatum is still on board for Gambit, or should another actor have taken his place? Let us know in the comments!

‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials’ New Trailer

The new trailer for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is here, and it’s absolutely a must see! Check it out below:

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is back to civilization (uh, kind of) in the sequel to the smash hit Maze Runner, but things are as dangerous as ever.

In this next chapter of the epic “Maze Runner” saga, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.- 20th Century Fox

Stealing the spotlight in the trailer is Aiden Gillen, who is most notorious for portraying the sneaky and untrustworthy Littlefinger (aka Lord Peytr Baleish) on Game of Thrones. He plays Janson, the main antagonist in the film. But to be honest, it seriously seems that Littlefinger just time traveled (or realm traveled?) into the world of Maze Runner – their character’s appear to be THAT similar (Game of Thrones season 6 plot twist, maybe?).

Also joining the already incredible cast for the second film is Giancarlo Esposito, who fans will remember best as incognito meth king pin Gus from Breaking Bad, and also as the magic mirror/Genie from Once Upon a Time.

With a cast and trailer this good, we absolutely can’t wait for September!

And, just in case you missed it, you can watch the original trailer for Scorch Trials below:

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials hits theater on September 18.

Do you think the sequel will live up to the first? Let us know in the comments below!

20th Century Fox Releases New ‘Fantastic Four’ Posters

This morning we received the newest posters for 20th Century Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four. Not only do we get a good look at our heroes in their reimagined costumes, but we catch a solid glimpse of Doctor Doom that lasts more than half a second.

Check them out below:

Focusing on exploring inter-dimensional travel, Marvel’s original superhero team gets a new, modern look that has become so popular and successful among other franchises like Iron Man and the Avengers. No more blue jumpsuits with gigantic stylized 4s emblazoned across them; the team’s new togs look more like athletic Under Armour with a practical combat flair. And Reed looks downright wired to break all the known laws of physics!

View the official 20th Century Fox 3 minute trailer below:

Directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller as Mister Fantastic, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, Fantastic Four cosmic storms theaters August 7.

What do you think of the new costumes? Practical or too militaristic? Tell us in the comments!.

New TV Spots for ‘Fantastic Four’

This month, we have seen two new TV spots released for the new Fantastic Four movie. Both offer up what is to be a promising reboot packed with a lot of action!

The movie is based off of Marvel’s very first super hero team whom we are all familiar with at this point. But, in a departure from the team’s original origin, the four main characters are teleported to a different dimension where they develop their powers.

One other notable difference is the characters are at least five years younger than their original counterparts, which could either be a refreshing take on the series or possibly hinder it with the overly modernized story line.

Regardless, it sure seems like it’s going to be a fantastic movie to see this summer holiday season!

We’ve got the two new TV spots for you below. Fantastic Four hits theaters August 7, 2015.

Fox Releases New Fantastic Four Trailer

Hot on the heels of the other amazing trailers we’ve been treated to this week, 20th Century Fox has released a new full-length trailer for Fantastic Four. There’s so much goodness packed into just under three minutes, so what are you waiting for? Check it out!

In Fox’s Fantastic Four, Reid Richards (Miles Teller), Sue Storm (Kate Mara), Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan), and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) discover the key to interdimensional travel and visit another dimension, imbuing them with their abilities and the will to become Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing.

And the trailer gives us a glimpse at the Four’s most enduring adversary, Dr. Doom (Toby Kebbel). Correct me if I’m wrong, but did I see Victor travel through dimensions with the Four? Guess we know how he got his powers (and why he’s so angry at them).

Fantastic Four hits theaters August 7, 2015 and I will so be there!
