Her Universe Fashion Show: See the Looks!

Geek couture was front and stage at San Diego Comic-Con for the third annual Her Universe Fashion Show!

The fashion show was hosted by actress and Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein, who showed up to the event wearing an incredible LEGO dress designed after her Star Wars: The Clone Wars character, Ahsoka Tano.

The dress was created by LEGO artist Nathan Sawaya and fashion designer Andrew MacLaine. It was made with over 10000 LEGO bricks and weighed a whopping 25 pounds, making this dress the ultimate geeky workout.

But even more impressive than Ashley’s dress were the creations of the contestants in the fashion show.

Each contestant competed to win the honor of designing their own fashion collection with Her Universe. The winner’s collection will be exclusive to Hot Topic – Her Universe’s retail partner for SDCC three years running.

After all was said and done, two winners were crowned as geek couture goddesses by the judges and the audience:

Judges Winner: Imperator Furiosa by Hannah Kent

Audience Winner: Marauder’s Map by Camille Falciola

The Remaining Contenders:

Voting may have taken place on the main stage, but a third contestant is still eligible to win the grand prize! Check out the remaining contenders in the gallery below, and don’t forget to vote for your favorite look!

Voting ends at midnight (Pacific Time) on Thursday, August 11th.

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 1 Recap

San Diego Comic-Con is officially a wrap! There has been too much news to wrap our heads around in the wake of the convention, so first, let’s take a deep breath, pace ourselves, and take a good look at all the goodies that came out of day 1 of the 4 day mega geek event!

Disney’s Moana will not feature a love interest

Disney’s newest “princess” will be an independent woman who don’t need no man!

Moana directors John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid) told San Diego Comic-Con panel-goers that the film’s protagonist, Moana, will not be looking for love in her debut film, but rather herself.

The CG-animated featured film takes place 2000 years ago in the Pacific Ocean. It stars Moana, an adventurous teenager who, with the help of the demigod Maui (voiced by The Rock), sails out on a daring mission to save her people.

Moana hits theaters November 23.

Marvel reveals Luke Cage debut trailer

Jessica Jones’ unbreakable love interest is getting his own series, and now we have the trailer for it!

Netflix’s Marvel series are notorious for their slow releases, but Mike Colter (who plays Luke Cage) confirmed during the Luke Cage panel that the series will be coming to Netflix on September 30.

…& a first look at Iron Fist

Loras Tyrell may have gotten the short end of the stick during Season 6 of Game of Thrones, but the actor who played him, Finn Jones, is doing just fine.

Jones will star in Netflix’s latest Marvel series as Danny Rand (aka Iron Fist), a close friend of Luke Cage, a member of The Defenders, and an incognito martial-arts guru (to sum it up extremely vaguely).

No official release date has been released for the series.

…& the first teaser for The Defenders

All those Marvel and Netflix trailers have been leading up to one thing: The Defenders.

This new Avengers style series will star Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Plus some of the subcharacters we know and love from our heroes respective series.

No release date has been announced, but the heroes will be uniting in 2017.

Daredevil is getting a third season

In addition to these trailers, Marvel also confirmed that Daredevil season 3 will indeed be happening (thanks Joe Quesada!), but a release date has yet to be announced.

Snowden trailer revealed

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Edward Snowden in Snowden, a theatrical representation of the real story of the CIA’s most infamous whistleblower.

Shailene Woodley co-stars alongside Gordon-Levitt, with Oliver Stone directing.

Snowden hits theater September 16, 2016.

First look at Justice League Action

Featuring over 150 DC characters, Cartoon Network’s upcoming animated series is poised be one of the expansive representations of the DC Universe to date. Each episode of Justice League Action will include two 11-minute standalone series featuring varying characters from DC’s gallery of rogues and heroes.

Cartoon Network has not yet announced an official release date for the series.

MacGyver is coming back to CBS

…Though probably not in the way you imagined.

CBS shared brand new footage of their rebooted, modernized take of the classic 80’s show during the CBS panel.

Lucas Till plays MacGyver, with George Eads starring as his sidekick, Jack Dalton.

The pilot episode will be directed by James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring, Furious 7), so expect this series to be action packed!

Macgyver airs this fall on CBS.

Teen Wolf to conclude after season 6

Sorry, Teen Wolf fans… MTV confirmed during SDCC that their popular series will conclude after season 6. To brighten the mood, here is the official teaser trailer for the latest season:

Stay tuned for more SDCC goodies!

Calling All Designers! Submissions Are Now Open for the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic-Con

Last year, GeekGirl World attended the Her Universe Fashion show, and it was a spectacular event for geek couture and nerd fashion! Her Universe and fashion retail partner Hot Topic will be hosting their premiere geek couture runway fashion show again this year on July 21 at 6pm at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel during San Diego Comic-Con. The third annual Her Universe Fashion show will once again offer fans and aspiring designers the chance to submit their pop culture inspired designs to compete on the runway for the unique opportunity to design their very own collection exclusively for Hot Topic stores. The Her Universe Fashion Show has been one of the biggest special events at Comic-Con since it’s inception, and this year it is poised to be even bigger as they make bold strides to further enhance the experience of the show.

The submission process is NOW OPEN for up and coming designers 18 years or older. One of the biggest changes this year will be the opportunity for designers in the Southern California area to submit their designs to Her Universe and Hot Topic judges at the Hollywood and Highland location of Hot Topic in Los Angeles on April 23, starting at 10am. If you don’t live in the Southern California area, or can’t make it to the open call, no worries, because ALL designers (including those who attend the open call) will still need to submit their entries online. However, online submissions will now have the additional option of adding a video explanation to present their idea to the judges. Get those submissions ready, folks! The deadline for ALL applications (including those planing to attend in-person at the open call in LA) is 11:59pm PST on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Submit your designs for consideration here! GOOD LUCK!

Original sketches from last year’s winning fashion show designers, Kelly Cercone (Joker’s New Look) and Leetal Platt (Usagi’s Transformation). The design competition submission process for the 2016 Her Universe Fashion Show is now is open for designers to submit their own women’s fashion designs based on anything that is celebrated at Comic-Con, original or inspired by popular media

Once the call for submissions closes, twenty-five designers will chosen and notified on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. These twenty-five finalists will be given the opportunity to compete on the runway in the Her Universe Fashion Show at SDCC for the grand prize. The entire process from start to finish will be filmed as part of a docu-series set to air on the new Comic-Con HQ channel. Plus this year, in addition to the judges choice winner and audience choice winner at the show, a third winner will be selected by the viewers on the Comic-Con HQ channel at home!

“My favorite part of The Her Universe Fashion Show has been getting to know all of the designers behind the scenes…With the new docu-series on Comic-Con HQ, fans will get to know each designer and follow their process and journey to the runway at SDCC. There are so many talented designers out there that just need the opportunity and platform to showcase their skills. I encourage fans to submit and no experience is necessary!”

– Ashley Eckstein, Her Universe Founder

“We always put the fans and community first at Her Universe and the fashion show is an example of our mission.”

Wizard World: Vendor Spotlight

If you’re looking for some great artists and creators to fulfill all your geeky purchasing needs,  head into the Wizard World vendor hall and check out these amazing items!

candles

2016-03-19 15.58.28First up I found Lauren with Boonzy Arts who is based out of L.A. She has all kinds of incredible candles that smell delicious.  Her candles are inspired by her love of pop-culture which grew from her immense love of reading as a child.  Her “Wheel of Flame” candles are a unique idea she came up with and Kickstarted. Each scent can be used to
enhance your table-top gaming experience and comes with a random metal die. For instance, if your party is about to head into a cave to fight a dragon,  you can light the “Lair of the Dragon” candle to take the experience to a whole new level.  She also has pop-culture candles like “It Rubs the Lotion on It’s Skin” which smells like lotion , “Marshmallow Man” which is modeled after the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man,  and “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” which comes in a teacup! You can buy directly from her site also so make sure to check it out of you’re not in the Las Vegas area this weekend.

crafts
The next booth that caught my eye was Sara with My Faerietale because she has these 2016-03-19 16.00.05absolutely adorable pot people. She is Las Vegas based and you can only find her at conventions so make sure to come out!  She also has a love of pop-culture and a great motto of “I make what I like and I hope you like it too.” In addition to her pot people she also has an assortment of pins, magnets,  clocks and jewelry.  All the artwork is original from her daughter. Sara started at the Las Vegas Comic Expo in 2013 and now is doing between 12 and 15 conventions a year. I highly recommend stopping by her table and taking home your very own pot person.
petsI ran into Shakespeare’s Workshop (almost literally) with owner Summer Shakespeare who was absolutely delightful.  She is also based out of Las Vegas and has all sorts of 3-D prints,  custom costumes and hoodies, wigs, and the most incredible pet costumes.  She can be found on Etsy as well as on Periscope,  where you can actually watch her as she creates your custom item.

2016-03-19 18.26.42If you’re like me and can’t leave a con without picking up a new print (or 10) to adorn your walls, make sure to check out Lisa Hall with Hallustration. She was always into Star Wars growing up and has expanded her geeky interests into anime and now comic characters.  It was through attending other conventions that she learned she could put her artistic talents to work reimagening her favorite characters in her own style. Most of the prints are in digital media, although she very much enjoys traditional art as well. If you can check her out here at Wizard World,  but if you can’t you can check out her Etsy or next weekend she will be at Salt Lake Comic Con.

2016-03-19 18.27.31

If you’re looking for a new series,  I highly recommend checking out Katie Salidas. She is from Las Vegas and currently has two full,  6 book series and a third series that is just starting out.  Chronicles of the Uprising is a Hunger Games meets Interview with the Vampire meets Gladiator.  She says that although it has vampires in it,  they’re not what you would normally think of vampires.  She also has her Immortals series which is a paranormal romance. Both of those series you can read without having to wait for the next installment! Her newest series is Pretty Little Werewolf.  The synopses for the first book begins: “All Giselle ever wanted was a family… who can accept her for what she is, a werewolf. In a world where supernatural creatures are not out and proud, this has been a problem for 16 year old Giselle. A child of the system, she’s been bounced from home to home for as long as she can remember. As soon as the moon calls out her inner wolf, it’s back into the system she goes….” you can read the rest on her website if you aren’t able to visit her this weekend.

Official ‘Deadpool’ Trailer to Launch Tonight

The official trailer for Deadpool will be revealed tonight!

You can check it out by tuning in to Conan, where special guest Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool himself) is stopping by to reveal his latest (and perhaps only?) masterpiece.

And this just won’t be any trailer. Conan will be airing the red band trailer, so viewers can expect plenty of blood and profanity. So much, in fact, that TBS had to change the rating for tonight’s episode of Conan to TV-MA.

Coco must be feeling really great right now, as that rating change is something NBC would have NEVER done.

And for those who find it strange that the Deadpool trailer would be revealed on Conan, you must be oblivious to the fact that Conan O’Brien is the absolute king of Comic-Con.

Conan airs tonight at 11/10c on TBS!

And, if you haven’t already, make sure to check out the Deadpool teaser trailer!

Will you be tuning into Conan tonight? Let us know in the comments!

‘Deadpool’ Teaser Trailer Revealed

San Diego Comic-Con brought us so many fantastic new trailers this year, and luckily all of them were put online shortly after their convention unveiling.

Well, the exception to this being Deadpool, whose trailer was wrapped in a sweet, sweet bow of violence and profanity as a gift solely for 20th Century Fox panel-goers during the convention.

Those of us who haven’t watched the trailer illegally online (because this is the 21st century and of course it leaked) have been waiting impatiently for the official launch of the trailer, and i’m here to tell all you excited Deadpool fans this special news:

We still don’t have it.

What we do have, though, is the first official teaser trailer for the film, which you can check out below! Oh, and language warning!

This trailer should hopefully keep all you fans out there happy until tomorrow, when the actual trailer is FINALLY released.

Deadpool arrives in theaters February 12, 2016.

Check back tomorrow to see the official trailer for Deadpool. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts! Are you excited for the film? Let us know in the comments below!

Surviving the Summer Break for Once Upon a Time Fans – Camelot Cast Revealed!

I’m swimming in Once Upon a Time news from Comic Con like Prince Charming water dancing with the Lady in the Lake-turned Snow White: it’s sexy as hell, but it isn’t real.

ABC
“Nah, nah, honey, I’m good.”

I wanted to title this article “Comic-Con Is the Cure for the Summertime Once Upon a Time Blues,” but while I’ve reveled in every little scrap of news coming out of San Diego this weekend, I’m feeling ever the more desperate for September 27. Every funny, exciting, thrilling quote, picture, or revelation that’s proffered up, just reminds me more and more that that which we yearn for is still 76 days away.

By the way, I made this. Consider it a gift. Christmas in July, etc., etc. You’re super welcome. Please send cookies.

But several weeks ago I did say we have to stay optimistic if we want to make it out of Summer break alive. And while I loathe eating my words (they get in the way of the delicious cookies I’m trying to shovel in there), I have to admit, it really is the best course of action. So let’s focus on the positive!

We have FOUR new confirmed actors for Season 5 according to the news out of Saturday’s OUaT panel. We’ve already focused on Amy Mason who was cast as Merida, the arrow-shooting red-head who doesn’t take any MacGuff from anyone. It’s possible she may make an early appearance and play a part in the Dark Swan storyline, but my doubloons are on her making her debut Zelena-style and kicking off the second half of the season post hiatus and after the Dark Swan chapter closes.

Since Episode 1 of Season 5 is definitely titled “Dark Swan,” and it is confirmed by show creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis that the episode will pick up just moments after the events of the Season 4 finale, we can easily assume that the Apprentice’s dying admonition to “find Merlin” will be on the top of everyone’s to do list. Merlin, of Authurian legend fame, is to be played by Elliot Knight.

© DAVID MCNEW/Reuters/Corbis

Most famous for his portrayal of the pirate Sinbad in the 2013 UK television show of the same name, Knight is an unexpected yet intriguing choice for the wizard to end all Dark Ones.

Knight is twenty-five years old, which is a sharp contrast to the traditional depiction of Merlin as an aged warlock. Anything written about Merlin’s younger years dealt much with his love life, which is always a topic OUaT is masterful at making into motive. Considering the Lady in the Lake has already been well-established, she would be an excellent introduction to Merlin in an episode; recounting her possible backstory as Viviane the huntress, and Merlin’s legendary obsession with her. Of course, Knight is just playing the part. They may very well age him, or explain away his age to magic. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time on this show for that!

Lisbon born Joana Metrass joins the cast as Camelot’s Guinevere.

Mug Photography

Her credits include long-running Portuguese dramas Morangos com Açúcar (2012) and Sinais de Vida (2013).

Andrew Jenkins head shot

Fresh out of Wayward Pines (2015) is Andrew Jenkins who will portray Percival, one of King Arthur’s knights. As Lancelot appeared in Season 2, it’s reasonable to assume that he and several other knights may also play a part in the backstory of Merlin. No word yet if phrases like “Holy Grail” or “Quest” or “Shrubbery” will come up along the way, but knights and princesses in Camelot rarely have boring days, so I expect we can look forward to some of the traditional mythos weaving its way into the Dark Swan storyline.

I and other Oncers are also interested to see if fan speculation might become canon. You’ll remember that at the end of Operation Mongoose Part 2, Lily, who is dragonborn, asked Emma if she minded if she stayed in town to look for her real father.

ABC
“I’m trying to get me an mom on Maury, but they say I have to at least three suspected dads before they’ll even interview me.”

As Merlin is known for his demonic origins and his penchant for talking to dragons, there are definite rumblings about if Merlin will be revealed to be Maleficent’s dragondaddy. While likely it’s also rather obvious, so I’m calling fifty-fifty odds on that scenario.

Maybe I’ll change the name of the article to the “Once Upon a Time Summer Speculation 2015 Bonanza.” I feel like I’m sitting around, pre-Deathly Hallows, spitballing what I think is going to happen in book seven of Harry Potter based off of the color scheme of the dust jacket. But no matter what happens, good or bad, expected or blindsided, traditional or whole new story, I am confident that someone will send me cookies— I mean, that Season 5 will be the most magical season yet! Join me in the comments for more spitballing!

Do you like the choices for the our new Camelot cast?
What theories do you have about Merlin, Guinevere, and Percival?
Do you think Merlin and Lily will be related?

‘Once Upon a Time’s Newest Princess Aims True at San Diego Comic Con

I was at Comic Con San Diego for the great 2013 Once Upon a Time panel in Ballroom 20, and it was quite a time to be alive. Once Upon a Time: Wonderland was in the works and we were treated to a 10 minute cut. Good Morning Storybrooke premiered and has since become a Youtube guilty pleasure for many Oncers. And Ariel stole Grumpy’s dinglehopper and our hearts with her brief, but thrilling, sneak peak!

And as much as I squeed, furiously clapped, jumped up and down in my seat, and made grabby hands at the stage and screens, I probably would have passed out if they had played this for me:

On a side note, I love that OUAT’s music can be so magical yet so stressful at the same time. *chills* Not only does Amy Manson walk with the comfortable stride of of her animated counterpart…

http://38.media.tumblr.com/fd90fcc293dc4ca0d8fd2ec87ac98f83/tumblr_inline_mj8jth7toN1qz4rgp.gif
…but she also possesses all her sharpness of skill, too!

http://24.media.tumblr.com/bc193743802ce5ecbbca7e3cff66eb08/tumblr_n55p3xoF181tx3qdao4_400.gif
And even more importantly, our new Merida-in-the-flesh looks ready to take on the whole sorted forest!

Now here’s the thing about Merida: the movie was called Brave, not Free Spirit or Merida the Adventurer, but Brave.

Brave can be quiet. Brave can be small. Brave can be stalwart and steadfast. Brave can be graceful and clever. Brave is something anybody can be, but they have to choose to be it. And if you look at who the heroes are in OUAT, you see that those who earn the title “brave” chose to be bold, chose to put others ahead of themselves, chose to embrace who they really are and the strengths and sacrifices that go along with that acceptance. If there was ever a mascot for Season 5, Merida will be it!

There is speculation as to what other role she’ll play in the upcoming season.

With Emma becoming the Dark Swan and the Apprentice’s dying admonition to find Merlin, it’s quite possible that Merida may have her own hand to lend in the search for history and folklore’s greatest magician of all time. Or perhaps she runs afoul of the new Dark One when Emma makes her way to the Enchanted Forest, as teased in ABC’s other promo video here.

Some of Amy Mason’s more recent geeky roles include Alice Guppy from Torchwood (2008), Daisy from Being Human (2010), and Medea in Atlantis (2014). But devotees will remember her fondly as Jodie Hatfield from 2007’s Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud.

What do you think of our first look at Merida? Do you think Amy Mason is a good choice for our new princess? What do you think Merida’s role will be in Season 5?

SDCC Day 3 Recap!

So many trailers were revealed at Comic-Con today, but unfortunately not a lot of footage has been officially released on the internet.. at least not just yet. Check out our recap of some of day 3’s most buzz worthy events:

Batman v Superman trailer

It’s here, it’s awesome, and now it’s available for everyone outside the confines of Comic-Con to watch.

Suicide Squad trailer revealed

DC revealed the trailer for Suicide Squad at Comic-Con, but unlike the Batman v Superman trailer, the studio hasn’t officially released it online.

There are plenty of leaked videos online from the panel, so if you do want to get a grainy, illegal view of the Joker & Co., you better get that done before it’s gone!

As for us, we’re just going to wait until they inevitably put the trailer online in all it’s HD glory.

Fox gives fans a first look at X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman gets emotional11417319_1633109993640042_1397798838_n

Fox gave the panel audience a first look at Apocalypse, but much like Suicide Squad we are going to have to wait before we get the footage.

According to The Hollywood Reporterthe footage begins with a glimpse of Oscar Isaac as the villain, Apocalypse, and ended with James McAvoy Professor X, now completely bald.

Hugh Jackman, who will be reprising his role as Wolverine, spoke briefly, saying that this will be “my last time putting on the claws. This has been the greatest things that has ever happened to me.”

There was an X-Men montage shown prior to the new footage and many of the scenes heavily featured Jackman as Wolverine, all in honor of the actor’s last appearance as his most iconic character.

We do have at least something to share from the event, though. Before the panel even began, Fox was handing out flyers to fans with an artist’s rendering of Apocalypse‘s title character, which you can see on your right.

Deadpool trailer revealed

But once again we aren’t able to see it just yet. Ugh, the folly of man.

From what we’ve heard, the trailer is full of obscenities (as one would expect from an R-rated film) and is absolutely hysterical.

Ryan Reynolds (who plays Deadpool) shared a clip from the raunchy character himself before the panel begin, making fun of his characters past appearances and Reynold’s own superhero past.

Life will be so much better once this footage is shared with the world, that’s for damn sure!

Warner Bros. teases new Green Lantern movie

And speaking of Ryan Reynolds, Warner Bros. teased a new Green Lantern movie

during its introduction of the DC portion of the panel. Among the heroes and villains shown, a logo suddenly popped up saying “Green Lantern Corps.”

Is this an attempt at a reboot? We don’t know, but we certainly hope so!
