Game of Thrones Recap: Ep. 44, “Sons of the Harpy”

This week opens with Jorah knocking out a fisherman in order to take his boat. He needs transportation to take Tyrion to the Queen and this little boat will do well. He makes sure to leave some coin for the fisherman because he is Jorah, after all.

Jamie and Bronn head towards Dorn when Bronn questions Jamie’s motives. He asks why he is doing this himself rather than sending an army, or at least someone in his place seeing as how he only has one hand and easily one of the most recognizable faces in all of Westeros. Jamie claims he has to be the one to do it.

Cersei, meanwhile, is gettig6ng all her pawns into place for the version of the Game of Thrones. First is Mace Tyrell, who she sends to Braavos to negotiate with the Iron Bank and eagerly sends Meryn Trant to be his escort. Trant is ruthless and has never had a problem carrying out some terrible dirty task for the crown. Mace is oblivious, of course, and agrees to go. Next up is to form her own army of loyal followers and that is accomplished by assigning the High Sparrow to be the next High Septon. In her meeting with him, she convinces him they need to go back to the times when the Faith Militant passed judgment over the people. The Sparrows quickly take to their new duties and begin trashing the brothels, killing those that stand in their way, and taking Sir Loras into custody for his sins. Lancel is a fully initiated Sparrow with his new faith symbol carved into his head, and is the one to take Loras into custody.

Queen Margaery is lividly upset that her brother was taken to jail and demands an oblivious Tommen free him. Tommen goes to speak with Cersei about it, but she easily dissuades him, saying she has had nothing to do with it and that he needs to speak with the high Sparrow. Tommen goes to see the High Sparrow, but his path is blocked by the Sparrows because they will not allow the High Sparrow to be disturbed while he prays. There is a standoff between the Sparrows and the King’s Guard, but Tommen backs down when the surrounding crowd begin shouting “bastard” and “abomination” at him. He meekly reports back to Margaery that he was unable to free Loras, so Margaery informs him she must go visit with her grandmother.

g4At the Wall, Jon must sign papers to accept men from Roose Bolton and he is very reluctant to work with those that killed his brother. Sam informs him it is his only option to regain their numbers. After Sam leaves, Melisandre enters to request he ride with them to Winterfell. When he declines stating the Wall is his home now, she makes it clear she wants a lot more from him than just that. He not-as-quickly turns her down on that offer, as well.

Elsewhere at the Wall, Stannis is visited by Shireen who says she is glad they brought her with them, even though her mother didn’t want to. She asks if he is ashamed of her, and he tells her the tale of her early life. When she was a baby, he bought a wooden doll off a merchant and she was so happy when he gave her the doll, she held it against her cheek. It was the source of her Greyscale infection and when everyone said to send her away to die he refused, and brought in every healer, maester, and apothecary he could find until someone managed to stop the infection. He affirms that she is the Princess Shireen, and his daughter.

Sansa is in the tombs of Winterfell, lighting the memorial candles for Lyanna Stark’s likeness when Littlefinger finds her. g3He tells the story of when he first met Lyanna and the tournament in which Rhaegar Tagaryen beat Barristan Selmy and rode past his wife to lay a bouquet of flowers in Lyanna’s lap. He notes that this act of choosing her, the woman who belonged to Robert Baratheon led to such a large rebellion, and appears to want to say more, but stops. Sansa notices he is dressed for riding, and he tells her he must report to King’s Landing as Cersei has called for him. She doesn’t like the idea of being left with the Boltons, but he assures her Stannis will be riding against them soon and when he does he will defeat the Boltons and she will become the Wardeness of the North. Should Stannis fail, she will marry Ramsey and since he is already in love with her she will still be able to outmaneuver him and the North will be hers either way.

g2Jamie and Bronn reach the shores of Dorne and, after camping out for the night, Jamie awakes to find Bronn standing over him with his sword. He throws it next to Jamie’s head and kills a sand snake that was about to bite him. They head out but are immediately met by four Dornish soldiers on the approach. Jamie and Bronn attempt to hide but fail miserably and fail even harder at their cover story. They have no other choice but to fight and win, but just barely. If Jamie hadn’t discovered a new use for his gold hand in battle, he’d be dead meat.

Elsewhere in Dorne, Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes meet up and she tells them her plan to hurt Cersei by hurting Myrcella. Myrcella is to be used to start a war if Ellaria has any say in it. Obara then reveals a man, buried to his neck in sand with scorpions crawling over him, who they tortured information out of. He admitted to smuggling Jamie Lannister into Dorne and it is clear the Sand Snakes must act quickly to get to Myrcella before Jamie does.

Jorah is well on his way when Tyrion notices they are g5headed the wrong direction. He mentions to Jorah that they are headed East, rather than West, which is where Cersei, the Queen, is. Jorah informs him he is not heading to Westeros but to take him to the true Queen, Daenerys. Tyrion laughs and tells him he wasted a good abduction as he was already headed to see her. He also figures out who Jorah is and why he is no longer with Daenerys, and with that Jorah goes over and hits Tyrion, knocking him out.

Barristan Selmy tells Daenerys about her older brother’s love of song and how he would sing to the people in the streets. It is qg1uite a lovely story but when business calls and she must leave to hear the pleas of her people. She send Selmy out to the streets to sing for her and she hears Hizdahr zo Loraq once again beg for the return of the fighting pits as it is their tradition. Outside, the Sons of the Harpy set in motion an annihilation of her Unsullied army as they are tricked into an ambush. Grey Worm fights hard and takes out several Sons but is stabbed in the side in the process. He is outnumbered when Selmy happens upon them and helps dispatch the Sons. He is nearly killed by one when Grey Worm manages to save him from having his throat cut, but he takes a spear to the chest instead. The episode ends in bloodshed as Selmy and Grey Worm lie on the ground wounded or possibly dead amongst the dead Sons of the Harpy.

Game of Thrones Recap: Ep. 43, “High Sparrow”

Arya is now in the House of Black and White and she is being made to sweep the floors amongst the statues of gods from many faiths. She confronts Jaqen H’ghar and tells him she did not come to sweep floors, she wants to train, but he dismisses her saying that all men must serve. She must serve the Many-Faced God, but she does not see him anywhere among the statues. She watches a man who appears to be dead being taken away, but no one will tell her where they are taking him.

Cersei is traveling to the wedding of Margaery and Tommen and all the people are shouting “Queen g6Margaery,” which thrills Cersei, I’m sure. Margaery and Tommen marry and are very quick to consummate the marriage, which is something Tommen takes great pleasure in. Tommen admits that he doesn’t feel any guilt that he is married to Margaery and is now the King all because his brother died. Margaery beings to manipulate young Tommen about Cersei and how motherly she is and protective over him. The next day, Tommen is walking with his mother and with Margaery’s words swiming in his head asks Cersei if she would be happier going back to Casterly Rock. Cersei pays a visit to Margaery and a lot of pleasantries are exchanged but all have an underlying bite and tease to them (at Cersei’s expense).

At Winterfell, Reek appears sad to see a flayed couple being hoisted up and put on display. The Boltons discuss their inability to hold the north against the other houses now that Tywin is dead and their pact dissolved. Roose Bolton tells Ramsay that the best way to create strength among houses is marriage, not always flaying, and he has just the girl in mind.

Sansa and Littlefinger are traveling and when Sansa recognizes the area and asks Littlefinger where he is taking g2her. He’s taking her home to Winterfell and tells her that the marriage proposal was not for himself, it was for her. Sansa, of course, protests citing all the damage the Boltons have done to her family, specifically to her brother and mother, and their alliance with the Lannisters. Littlefinger says he would never make her do anything, but nonetheless tries to convince her that the marriage would be to her benefit and allow her to avenge her family. It works and she gets back on her horse and rides once again towards Winterfell.

Podrick and Brienne are still following Littlefinger and Sansa, but must take another route. Podrick says they will lose sight of Sansa and Littlefinger, but Brienne knows where they are heading. Podrick tells the tale of how he became a squire for Tyrion and says that he is proud to be Brienne’s squire. She feels a pang of regret for snapping at him all he time, and so decides to teach him how to be a knight. Brienne shares her story of how she began serving Renly Baratheon on his King’s Guard. She tells Pod that she knows it was Stannis who killed Renly and has vowed to avenge him.

At The Wall, Jon visits with Stannis and once again turns down becoming Jon Stark and commander of the Night’s Watch. Stannis calls him stubborn and honorable like Ned, and doesn’t mean it as praise. Stannis says honor got Ned killed. Jon asks Stannis how long he plans on staying and he tells him he will be marching on Winterfell in a couple days.

g3Arya is confronted by a girl at the House of Black and White who asks who she is with a coin she didn’t earn and whose value she doesn’t respect. Jaqen H’ghar interrupts just before Arya can pull her sword on the girl and he tells her she is not ready because she is still surrounded by Arya Stark’s things. Arya takes all her clothes, money, and things, wraps them up and dumps them in the sea. She is left with only Needle and cries because she cannot bear to toss it into the drink with the rest of her treasures, so she hides it underneath a pile of rocks nearby. She is inside sweeping again when Jaqen H’ghar leads her into a room and down a staircase she had previously been unallowed to visit. At the bottom the girl from before is inside a room with a dead man who is lying on a table. Arya begins helping the girl take off the man’s top and wash him. The girl will not answer any of her questions, and so they clean him in silence.

Littlefinger and Sansa arrive at Winterfell where the Boltons stand to greet her. She plays her part, bowing politely. It is odd for her to be home again, but her helper maid welcomes her, stating the North remembers.

At the Wall, Jon appoints someone the captain of building a new latrine pit and Sir Alliser is appointed First g4Ranger. Not everyone is pleased with the duties they are given, though; Lord Janos does not want to rebuild some ruins. He tells Jon he will not do as he says, so, after giving him a chance to reconsider obedience, Jon swiftly puts him in his place and has Janos taken outside where Jon beheads him while Stannis looks on. Jon is not playing around in his new position.

In Littlefinger’s brothel in King’s Landing, the Sparrows break in and drag a the High Septon out into the street to be punished. They whip him naked down the streets hissing “sinner” at him and then beat him some. When his ordeal is over he appeals to the King’s council about how he was treated by the g5Sparrows. He claims he was ministering to the prostitutes and demands they execute the High Sparrow. Cersei goes to find the High Sparrow and comes across him doling out soup to the hungry. He defends the Sparrows’ actions against the High Septom and Cersei agrees, telling him that he is now in the dungeons of the Red Keep. Cersei has Qyburn send a message sent to Littlefinger and we see he has a person under a cloth who gives an awful shudder, presumably a result of Qyburn’s “work.”

Ramsay tells Littlefinger he is thankful for the match and would never hurt Sansa before he is dismissed by his father. Roose and Littlefinger talk of the repercussions of bringing Sansa to Winterfell and he questions his allegiance to the Lannisters, especially since he just received a raven from Cersei for Littlefinger.

Tyrion and Varys are still traveling in their box and Tyrion is going stir crazy. Against advice, Tyrion stops the caravan needing to get out and see a face that doesn’t belong to Varys. Varys accompanies him and they listen to a priestess speak of the Savior, born of flames. She spots Tyrion and, feeling like he is too exposed, they head off to find a brothel. Once inside, they spot a prostitute dressed as “the Mother of Dragons” (haha). Also in the brothel is Sir Jorah. Tyrion goes to find some “company,” but when she stands to take him back with her, he admits he cannot accompany her. Has Tyrion grown up or is he feeling guilty about murdering the last prostitute he got close to? Jorah comes up behind Tyrion while he is peeing and wraps a rope around his neck, places a gag in his mouth and tells him that he is taking him to the Queen.

Game of Thrones Recap: Ep. 42, “The House of Black and White”

g1 This week we find Arya on her way to Braavos after having used the coin  Jaqen H’ghar gave her after trying to convince her to join the Faceless Men. She is brought to The House of Black and White and told what she seeks lies within. She is left alone and after knocking several times the door is answered. She makes several attempts to gain access inside, using the coin and the “Valar Morgulis” phrase to no avail. She is turned away by the priest. She waits there, on the steps repeating her kill list through the night, despite it being stormy, and into the next day. She finally gives up and tosses the coin into the sea and leaves.

Brienne and Podrick arrive at a tavern where Sansa and Littlefingerg6 happen to also be resting. Podrick notices Sansa first and alerts Brienne who tells him to ready the horses. This is difficult as they only have one horse, so Brienne tells him to find more. Brienne introduces herself and offers her allegiance to Sansa, stating she promised her mother before he died. Littlefinger questions her loyalty and ability to keep anyone safe as everyone she has been sworn to protect has died, and Sansa is also suspicious of her having seen her kneel to Joffrey at his wedding. At this, Brienne pushes past Littlefinger’s knights and steals a horse as Podrick is readying the other. The knights give chase and Podrick and Brienne are separated but Brienne quickly loses the men following her and heads back to find Podrick. It is then that she spots Sansa and Littlefinger with the rest of his men heading east on horseback. Podrick’s horse dumps him in a river and Brienne shows up just in time to save him from one of his pursuers. She declares they will follow Sansa and Podrick suggests Brienne is technically released from her vow since both Stark girls have now rejected her. She does not believe Sansa is safe with Littlefinger and so cannot just give up.

g4Back in King’s Landing, Cersei is upset over a package she’s received: a necklace belonging to Myrcella in the mouth of a snake poised to spring. She sees the package as a threat from Dorne thinks Myrcella is not safe. She and Jaime argue over his lack of involvement with their children’s lives, but Jaime assures her he will go to Dorne and get Myrcella back.

In Dorne, Ellaria Sand watches Myrcella and Trystane Martell flirting, then storms off to find Prince Doran, brother to the late
Elia and Oberyn and father to Trystane, to seek vengeance for her husband Oberyn by sending Myrcella piece by piece to Cersei. Prince Doran is disgusted and refuses, saying that dismembering young girls for vengeance will never happen while he rules. Ellaria leaves, but warns Doran that he might not keep ruling for long.

Sir Bronn and Lollys are on the beach at Castle Stokeworth and she is chatting on about their g2wedding while Bronn happily ignores much of what she is saying. They soon notice Jaime Lannister waiting for them further up the beach. Once there, Bronn dismisses Lollys and Jaime asks him to accompany him to Dorne to get Myrcella and in return he will get him a much better wife and castle.

Over in Meereen, Daario Naharis and Grey Worm investigate a suspected Sons of the Harpy hideout but find it empty. Daario asks Grey Worm if he is afraid, and Grey Worm replies that Unsullied do not fear. Daario points out that that is their problem as those who have forgotten fear have forgotten how to hide. He pulls his knife out and stabs a wall, making it crumble and revealing a man hiding behind it. The Unsullied take him captive, and Grey Worm discovers blades and gold masks at in the hiding place, revealing the man to be a Son of the Harpy. Daenerys’ small council gathers to discuss the captive. A former slave wants to execute him, while Ser Barristan advises restraint, as he may have valuable information, but Daario says he has already been interrogated. Ser Barristan suggests to give the captive a fair trial, but the former slave says that the people of Meereen do not know mercy and a fair trial will mean nothing to them. After Daenerys dismisses them, Ser Barristan tells her the truth about the Mad King Aerys, and uses this to remind Daenerys that till the very end, Aerys was convinced that he was right and just in spite of the atrocities he committed. Daenerys decides to hold a fair trial for the Son of the Harpy.

Tyrion is drinking his way to Volantis with Varys and learns there is a bounty on his head of an entire kingdom, placed there by Cersei.

In King’s Landing, the head of a dwarf is brought to Cersei and she states it is “not him.” It appears she is willing to have every dwarf in the world killed to find Tyrion. Qyburn is quick to ask for the head, saying that it might be useful to his work. Cersei attends the small council, taking up the Hand’s chair that her father used to occupy. When her uncle Kevan Lannister challenges her right to the chair she replies that she is advising her son until he comes of age. Mace Tyrell offers to be the King’s Hand, but Cersei cuts him off by telling him that the King has appointed him Master of Coin instead. Grand Maester Pycelle offers as well, but Cersei snubs him by saying that Qyburn has been named Master of Whisperers and will prove better than any eunuch. She cuts off Pycelle’s protests by addressing Kevan, saying that the King has named him Master of War. Her uncle refuses her and states that he would like to hear it from the King himself. He gets quite angry about not being addressed by the King and says that if the King needed him, he could find him at Casterly Rock.

At The Wall, Princess Shireen teaches Gilly how to read in the library while Sam researches on the history of Lord Commanders. Shireen and Gilly open up to each other and talk about Shireen’s greyscale and Gilly’s sisters, a few of whom were also afflicted by it. Queen Selyse interrupts them and orders them to leave, before warning Shireen to stay away from Gilly as she’s a wildling, and that the wildlings could strike at Stannis by striking at Shireen.

g7Jon Snow and Stannis discuss the wildlings and who they would be likely to follow now that Mance is dead. Stannis shows Jon a reply to his request for allegiance from Lyanna Mormont, the 10-year-old Lady of Bear Island. The message reads: “Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is Stark.” Jon smirks and remarks that the people of the North are largely loyal to their own and are like the Wildlings in this way. They then discuss the upcoming election for Lord Commander, and Stannis offers to anoint Jon as a Stark if he supports his cause, making Jon the Lord of Winterfell. Sam and Jon discuss this offer, and Sam says that Jon deserves this but Jon says that he’ll refuse, as he needs to keep his vows. The election begins and Alliser Thorne and Denys Mallister are nominated. Sam then hesitantly nominates Jon Snow, even though he is being made fun of. He points out the Jon is the one that has saved each of them time and again and notes that Mormont specifically chose Jon to be his steward. After Aemon stacks the voting tokens, it seems that there is a tie between Alliser and Jon, until Aemon produces a token for Jon from his sleeve, breaking the tie and confirming Jon Snow as the new Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.

Arya is on the streets of Braavos when she is accosted by by three young men who wish to take her sword. They flee after seeing the priest from the House of Black and White behind her. The priest takes her back to the House and tosses her the coin she had tossed into the ocean. She asks who he is and he transforms into Jaqen H’ghar, but tells her no man is Jaqen H’ghar, that this man is no one, which is what this girl, Arya, must become. They both enter the House.

The former slave in Meereen finds the captive Son of the Harpy, who calls him a traitor and says that Daenerys will never be his Mhysa. Next we see the same Son of the Harpy, bloodied and dead on display for everyone in Meereen to see, and then the former slave in chains in front of Daenerys. He tells her that he killed him for her, and that she is no longer required to have a fair trial for the Harpies since he shouldered the burden for her. She orders her guards to take him out to be executed. On one side of the g5execution stage stand the former masters, and on the other stand the freed slaves. The slaves cry for mercy for the man, but Daenerys stands firm and Daario executes him by chopping off his head. The former slaves hiss at Daenerys, and one picks up a stone to throw at her, but misses and hits the former masters. This causes a brawl to break out between the two groups and Daenerys is hurried back to her palace protected by her guards. Back in her quarters that night, she is told someone will be standing guard for her and she then dismisses everyone from her room. She then hears a noise from outside and walks out to her balcony to find the wayward Drogon perched on her roof. She is very happy to see him and reaches out for him. He climbs down closer to her to sniff her hand, but then flies away, leaving Daenerys shocked and hurt.

Game of Thrones: EP 41: Wars to Come

got10Games of Thrones is back!!! Let’s get right into it with the recap of this week’s episode. It opens with 2 teenage girls sneaking through the woods on their way to an unknown destination. The brunette is very wary of them sneaking out however the blonde is confident things will be fine because her father owns the land. They come to a small shack and venture inside, to find a woman sleeping. They accidentally awaken the woman who yells for them to leave, but the blonde demands that she tell her her future since she is a witch. The witch eventually concedes and after taking a sampling of the girl’s blonde, tells her she gets three questions. The girl asks her three questions, but does not like the answers she receives regarding her short time as a queen and the children she will have. The brunette girl begs to leave and it is at this point we learn that the blonde girl is Cersei Lannister.

It cuts away from this flashback to see Cersei, heading into the viewing chamber of her now got6deceased father. She requests to visit him alone, and that everyone else can wait. Once she is inside, Jaime is also in the chamber with Tywin. Cersei is incredibly upset with him for having released Tyrion and blames Jaime for their father’s death just as much as she does Tyrion. Jaime has always been their father’s favorite according to her, and he couldn’t even honor him by being the man he expected of him. Jaime warns that she doesn’t need to look for the monsters in the family, but rather the ones right outside, waiting for their turn to get their hands into the Lannister family power. At Tywin’s funeral she is met by Lancel, her former lover/cousin who has now converted to a fanatical religious follower. Seems he has found the light, but in doing so will he expose the any secrets he keeps for Cersei?

With the passing of Tywin we also see that Ser Loras Tyrell is wasting no time in flaunting his desires for his brothel-running boyfriend and is certain he will not be forced to marry Cersei any longer. Margaery warns him to still be cautious, but also states she has something up her sleeve in regards to Cersei.

got9We first glimpse Pentos from the air holes in the crate used to transport Tyrion. When he is finally released he looks wretched and asks Varys why he had to stay in there once they had left the port and were sailing. Varys knocks it up to precaution, but it’s obvious it gave him some pleasure to make Tyrion suffer a little more. It isn’t long before Varys starts hounding Tyrion about a new ruler for Westeros but Tyrion is having none of that. It takes a bit of time before Varys finds Tyrion again and basically gives him the ultimatum of staying in Pentos and drinking himself to death, or going with him to meet up with Daenerys and help her come to power. He eventually concedes, as long as he can keep drinking.

Speaking of Daenerys, we are taken to Mareen where their god statue is got5 being ripped down as she continues her rule there. One of the Unsullied takes to the brothel for some comfort and by comfort I mean cuddles. He isn’t equipped for much else after all and it seems he comes there often for this. Whilst he is enjoying his comfort, his throat is slit by one of the Sons of the Harpy. Guess they didn’t like their statue being torn down. Daenerys learns of this and states he will have an honorable burial and that she is not intimidated by the Sons of the Harpys. Eventually a consensus is met between the newly freed slaves and the previous slavers to work together but with some stipulations. They want to bring back the fighting pits but Daenerys can’t stand the idea of them. Later, while in bed together, Daario manages to sway her decision on the matter, stating he himself used money made in the fighting pits to gain his freedom. He tells her that she is more powerful than she is allowing herself to be, she is not the “Mother of the Unsullied” she is the “Mother of Dragons” and maybe it’s time she use this to her advantage. With this you see she attempts to visit her little bundles of joy and they are not very happy with mommy dearest for having locked them up.

got3Up in The Eyrie Robyn Aaryn is “learning” to sword fight, but it is going terribly. There are a lot of remarks on the hopelessness of his succeeding between Littlefinger and Royce before he tells Royce he and Sansa will be heading to the Fingers. Once in the carriage Sansa notices they are actually heading West, and Littlefinger tells her they are going somewhere even Cersei won’t be able to get to her. The carriage passes by two familiar people camped out, it is Brienne and Podrick. Brienne has just finished telling Podrick to basically get lost whilst she sharpens her sword and he unrolls her bedroll anyway, reminding her he will be there to help her in her search for Sansa. Well, timing is not on her side huh.

Finally we come to The Wall. Melissandre was sent to fetch Jon and bring got8him up to the top to meet up with Stannis and Lord Davos. Stannis gives Jon the task of getting Mance Rayder to swear allegiance to him and bring the Wildlings to be a part of his army. Should Mance decline, he will be burned. Alive. With this Jon goes down to where they are holding Mance and gives him the bad news. He tries everything he can to get him to agree because he doesn’t want to see him burn either as he is fairly fond of him. In the end, Mance is stubborn and is taken out and tied to the stake. Melissandre gives a lengthy speech about true good and evil, yadda yadda and sets the fire to the wood beneath Mance. As he starts to burn, Jon takes off because he doesn’t want to watch him burn any longer. The flames begin to lap at his legs and he cannot hold in his yelps anymore just as an arrow, fired by Jon Snow, meets his heart, putting him out of his misery. Whaaaaaat!!?? Oh Jon, you’re so impulsive. Can’t wait to see what happens next week!
