‘Arkham Knight’ DLC “Batgirl: A Matter of Family” Trailer Premieres Today

Yesterday we brought you the first look at Arkham Knight DLC, “Batgirl: A Matter of Family” where DC treated us to a powerful and exciting sneak peek at the cinematic cut scenes featuring Barbara Gordon in full, gorgeous costume, kicking crime’s butt and facing the Joker alongside Tim Drake’s Robin.

Today we got a whole trailer, all 90 seconds of it. We start out with Batgirl and Robin arriving at the Joker’s “main event” at the big top circus in the heart of Seagate Amusement Park. Harley Quinn, in her traditional red and black outfit, slinks by as we take a look around. Not only are there GCPD and SWAT officers dead or held hostage throughout the park, but Jim Gordon’s been captured and caged, suspended in true Joker style up high (and probably over a tank of something hungry!).

Though Robin tells her they ought to call Batman, Batgirl is adamant that the Joker will kill her father if they dare involve him. And seeing as how the Joker, sitting astride a huge canon, announces “the magnificent deaths of the caped do-gooders,” it looks like Barbara is going to have to play along with the psychopath’s demands.

Both Batgirl and Robin swoop in from above with all the knock-out force of the dive attacks we’ve come to love from the Arkham series of games, taking out the masked Joker thugs. Batgirl deftly disarms a brute with her batclaw, then makes quick work of the thug who dared aim a shotgun at her. With a Diana Rigg-esque high kick, Batgirl stands tall and triumphant.

The pack of Joker thugs the next scene unleashes is standard fare for Batman game fans; the RPG the Joker wields moments after is a little bit more intimidating. We get a great shot of Robin wiping off a thug’s grin as he uses his bow staff to assist Batgirl in an aerial attack. The Joker begins to muse about how things used to be so simple before these “knuckleheads” came in and “spoiled his game.”

What follows is frenetic montage of both cinematic cutscenes and gameplay which includes the always useful detective vision. We get to see Batgirl using her invisible predator skills as she stalks some thugs, but unfortunately there are no scenes utilizing her much-anticipated hacking talents. Though considering how dynamic and exciting this trailer is supposed to be, I suppose there wasn’t room for the more cerebral of her skill set.

As Batgirl promises that she’s “gonna put them all away,” Joker replies, “Not. Funny,” and fires his RPG at the base of one of the gondola lift pylons. Batgirl shouts out a warning to Robin, and, as the pylon explodes into a fireball, we watch Batgirl take flight on the edge of the shock wave.

The trailer ends with Harley’s signature giggle as the Joker points his handgun towards the viewer and eerily remarks, “It’s been a blast…” I don’t think it was a mere coincidence that they included this as the final scene to the trailer. Have a look for yourself:

Despite the initial grumblings earlier this year over the value and viability of the Arkham Knight Season Pass deal (Season Pass and Premium Edition, priced at $39.99 and $99.99, respectively), today’s release proves that WB and Rocksteady sure didn’t skimp on style. Here’s hoping they didn’t skimp on story, either, and that we get as much bang for our buck as we’ve hoped.

“Batgirl: A Matter of Family” releases to Season Pass holders Tuesday, July 14, in North America, and July 21 to non-Season Pass holders for $6.99.

What are your initial impressions about the trailer? Have you signed up for Season Pass for Arkham Knight yet? Do you think you’re getting your money’s worth with this newest DLC?

Trailer for New ‘Doom’ Game Hits E3, is Super Violent

To get a jump on this year’s E3 conference, Bethesda Softworks released a trailer for their upcoming Doom sequel at their pre-show conference!

Lucky for us, it was a combination of video and game play because they do not skimp on the gore. Check it out for yourself:

The trailer gives us the same first-person perspective Doom fans know and love and piles on all the surprise creatures, demons, hellfire, and chainsaws you can handle. Bethesda has yet to mention any kind of multiplayer facet to the game, but they say we can expect a new feature called “Doom Snapmap” which allows players to make game maps or even tweak the game’s rules to their liking while they play. So awesome!

While this title is definitely going to be more than my anxiety can handle, it’s sure to be a hit with all you first-person gore fans out there – and those of you who have been eagerly awaiting news on all things Doom. Look for the release in spring 2016 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

Nintendo Partners with Universal Parks & Resorts!

We will soon be seeing Nintendo-themed attractions at Universal Studios theme parks!

Universal Parks & Resorts recently announced that they will be partnering with Nintendo and integrating aspects of the gaming giant’s world into their parks.

Universal said the following in regard to the partnership in their official PR release:

Universal theme parks offer incredibly popular, innovative themed family entertainment experiences based on compelling stories and characters – using powerful storytelling and innovative technology. Nintendo has created remarkable and imaginative worlds filled with captivating stories and beloved characters.

Now, for the first time, those stories and characters will be brought to life in entirely new ways—only at Universal theme parks.

There is no word yet on how they plan to integrate the world of Nintendo into the theme parks, but the potential is there for something truly incredible.

It is quite possible that they will transform an entire section of one of their existing theme parks into a Nintendo area, similar to what they did with the absolutely incredible Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. Just imagine an interactive Super Mario Bros. ride, a Mario Kart themed go-kart track, or an interactive Legend of Zelda journey.

And if any Universal Studios higher-ups in development are reading this right now, just know that I am available to think up some more amazing ideas for you! …Paid, naturally.

GeekGirl World will keep you updated as new news on this partnership is released!

What Nintendo goodies do you think they should include in the parks? Let us know in the comments below!

Who Says Girls Can’t Game?

There’s a perception out there that gaming is meant for guys: little boys trying Mario for the first time, teenagers battling each other with communication headsets on first-person shooters, unemployed 30-year-old man-boys living digital second lives in their mothers’ basements… right down to the Frank Underwoods of the world turning out the lights and firing up the consoles for some stress relief. Indeed, at just about every level and with most any kind of game, the industry is portrayed as a man’s world. But the truth is, it’s not a man’s world—not even close.

Gamer girls out there will be fully aware that ladies have become more involved in the video game world over the course of the last decade. It’s not just because we’re all downloading Candy Crush Saga or testing our digital creativity building little worlds in Minecraft. We’ll jump right into shooters, MMORPGs, open-world adventures, and even categories like console sports games or online poker rooms (both of which seem to be thought of even more as guy-specific). But don’t take my word (or your own experience) for it: The numbers tellthe whole story when it comes to girls in gaming.

According to a number of different reports out there, women are not just more prominent than we used to be in gaming—we’ve taken over completely. The Daily Dot probably put it best, starting off an article with “Congratulations, gamer girls—you’re officially at the top of the food chain when it comes to games.” The piece cites a significant study that found 36% of all gamers to be adult women (with adult men just behind at 35%). The study also addresses the stereotypes I alluded to previously about women primarily being drawn to “social” and mobile games. Basically, the numbers show that gamer girls have been rising steadily in number since long before the smartphone and social networking booms popularized these sorts of games.

Girl Gamer numbers continue to rise.
Girl Gamer numbers continue to rise.

That said, there is some suggestion that enhanced social components to the gaming industry as a whole (not just games whose high scores you can post on Facebook) has helped to attract women. It’s pretty much understood that women are frequently drawn to these sorts of games, but just what constitutes a “social” game is changing. A Big Fish Games report on 2014 gaming statistics declared emphatically that mobile and social games will become more and more popular, and that the future of gaming will involve more multiplayer options. We’re already seeing the shift in plenty of established gaming genres.

The Betfair Poker platform, for example, now offers what amounts to a chat room environment attached to its poker games, turning ordinary online poker environments into active communities. While playing poker in these environments, users can link up with friends or engage with strangers as they please. Similarly, a number of popular console games have significantly enhanced their multiplayer and social options. Just recently, Far Cry 4 earned rave reviews for its co-op mode that basically lets friends play every part of the game together (rather than being shoved into a half-assed multiplayer side platform). Changes like these are simply making gaming more appealing to a wider demographic that consists largely of women.

Given all of the data and trends, the exciting thing will be seeing if the rise in female gamers continues in the coming years. A CNN article last year summed things up pretty nicely. Some women are drawn to shooters and adventure games due to increased focus on plot (as opposed to brute force); others are drawn to the aforementioned social revolution in gaming; and some are supportive of a growing trend of female protagonists within games. The article even noted the general shift in gaming as something that’s become more socially acceptable in recent years (largely due to more gamers playing with friends and family, as opposed to alone). Frankly, none of these trends seems likely to die out any time soon!

So, while there are still stereotypes labeling gaming as a guy’s hobby, remember this gamer girls: it’s your world now.

This is a guest post by Jan Alger. When she’s not writing about video games on the web, you can find her looking for a new bike-friendly journey through the more rural parts of New York.

New Arkham Origins TV Spot

Get a rare glimpse into the childhood evolution of Batman! batmanlittle

The newest TV Spot for Batman: Arkham Origins expands on the background of the young and newly orphaned Bruce Wayne, allowing us a brief, typically unseen look into the tween and teen years of the budding crime fighter.

But there is one major aspect of the story of Bruce Wayne/Batman missing from this advertisement: his hair.

Okay, well maybe it’s not MAJOR, but seeing Bruce without that signature jet black hair is definitely a little strange!

Check out the new spot below.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for PlayStation and Xbox on October 25th.

What do you think about a bald batman? Let us know in the comments below! (I secretly dig it)

Xbox Expected This Year

Xbox 360 with Kinect

The gaming world has been buzzing with excitement since Sony announced the PS4 last week. But for Microsoft, the Japanese electronics company didn’t announce new technology, but rather a declaration of war. Now, Microsoft is making their move and has a simple message for Sony: its game on.

Less than 24 hours after Sony’s announcement, the domain XboxEvent.com was registered by Eventcore – a company responsible for the planning of large, professional events, including the 2013 AT&T developer summit.

With this new development, It’s now evident that Microsoft is planning on revealing the Xbox this year.

And because the race is now on for the Xbox to be released in time to compete with the PS4 during the holiday shopping season, we can expect a large, and likely live, announcement by Microsoft within the coming months. This will likely happen before this summer’s E3 expo, which was originally rumored to be the stage for the Xbox’s release.

But we’re going to have to wait until that official announcement to get any details about the newest heir to the Xbox throne. The tight-lipped Microsoft has yet to reveal (or leak) any information about the new Xbox’s hardware, appearance, or features to the public. Even the popularized name of the new console, the Xbox 720, is still a matter of speculation.
