Geek Girls Ink’d: Artist Spotlight: Yvonne Wiltse

photo 2Our first featured artist is Yvonne Wiltse. Yvonne currently works out of Red Handed Tattoo in Las Vegas, NV, and doesn’t consider herself the stereotypical geek of days long past. She does, however, identify with the geeky world by making sure to pick up her pull box from her local comic book shop, and not missing a single Marvel movie midnight premiere while dressed to the nines in the best Avengers Minecraft shirt. Yvonne is not afraid to let her geek flag fly, and advertise her loves on her own skin and apparel. Her favorite fandoms began with Star Wars and Mario Bros., but have branched out into any comic she can get her hands on as well as video games, movies, TV series (Doctor Who, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly), and of course tattooing.

Yvonne has been an artist for over 6 years now, and finds it incredibly enjoyable and rewarding to tattoo in the geeky genre. The geek subculture has been such a huge influence on Yvonne’s life, and allows her to really bond with her customers when they are getting a tattoo of something she is a fan of as well. Yvonne believes a person’s tattoo artist should be fully invested in their client and the subject matter to give them the best experience possible. As a child, Yvonne’s parents were into Star Trek, and made sure she and her siblings were immersed in the sci-fi world as well. She received her first NES at age 6, and was able to master Super Mario by the end of that year, beating it in only 7 minutes. As Yvonne got older, her brother and sister were tattoo artists, and would joke with her about becoming one too. She was not into tattoos at that time, and was focusing on studying voice, musical theater, and opera in college; spending a lot of time performing in Las Vegas shows for a living. One day her sister allowed her to tattoo a tiny snowflake on her leg, and that was the spark that lit the fire in her passion for tattooing. This was both a magical and frustrating time for Yvonne, as she now had to completely change career paths, and start all over again. However, as many dreams go, they’re hardly easy, but incredibly rewarding.

Yvonne has never had to face any serious ridicule for her likes and interests, and if she ever were to, she would easily brush it off as those people are not worth it in the end. The majority of judgment Yvonne has to face if from the older generation who are not adjusted to, or accepting of a person, especially a woman, covered in tattoos. Within the subculture of geeks or tattoo enthusiasts, she never has to deal with any of that. For Yvonne, those subcultures contain the most generous, accepting, loving, and misrepresented people she has ever met. This is really the biggest reason she fell head over heels for her profession, and finds all anyone ever wants is for you to be genuine with them. When you aren’t honest with yourself or others about who you are, it is a waste of everyone’s time. Yvonne finds she is more powerful and respected when she can show her vulnerabilities.

For anyone, including young girls she would like to remind them that the world is a different place than it was even ten years ago, and if they want to do something, or be a part of something, just do it. The world will never change simply by people thinking it should, it changes when we engage in it. As she puts it, no one would sit on a pile of dirt their whole life and be frustrated that a garden never grows; you have to plant seeds, till the soil, sprinkle some water, etc., to make anything of that pile of dirt. “Change is always met with resistance… make it happen anyways.”

If you are interested in becoming a featured artist please email us here. To book an appointment with Yvonne reach her here. Check out a sampling of her work below.

Official first look at Fantastic 4’s The Thing!

It’s definitely clobberin’ time!  Take a look at Benjamin Grimm, aka The Thing, in the Fantastic Four reboot!

90287

Based on this photo it’s impossible to tell that this literal mountain of a man is actually Jamie Bell.

The Thing was created this time around with CGI rather than visual effects and makeup, allowing for a more realistic rocky appearance than his previous orange incarnation (portrayed by Michael Chiklis).

But, to Chiklis’s credit, his portrayal did more closely resemble The Thing’s appearance in the original comics. The structure and color of his costume was spot on, although his head did seem to retain too much of Ben Grimm’s past human appearance compared to the comics.

The new image, along with two other exclusive screen grabs from the upcoming reboot (see below), were revealed in Empire magazine.

This isn’t the first glimpse of the rebooted Grimm to hit the internet, though. We have known for a few weeks just what Jamie Bell’s take on The Thing would look like via a low-quality Instagram photo.

Fantastic Four is scheduled for an August 7th, 2015 release!

So who do you think wore it best: Michael Chiklis or Jamie Bell? Let us know in the comments below!

Deadpool costume revealed!

Ryan Reynolds gave his fans a rather seductive look at his official costume for Deadpool today via Twitter, and it’s beyond awesome.

If this photo and tagline is any indication of what we are going to see in the movie, we can assume that Deadpool will closely translate from the comics and retain all his, well, charm.

Let’s just hope that Reynolds does him justice!

Deadpool is slated to hit theaters February 12, 2016.

Why You Need To Start Toning Your Skin

You cleanse, you moisturize, but do you tone? If not then you should do your skin a great favor and start today.

Explain…

Cleansing, as we all know, clears the skin of dirt, makeup, and nasty little bacteria. But what you may not have known is that cleansing (especially with a harsh cleanser) also strips away some of your skin’s natural acidity that is key to maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

Toners will restore natural PH levels in the skin, leaving your skin healthier, vibrant, and younger looking. Toners also aid in skin cell regeneration, which is great for acne sufferers, as scars will be visibly reduced in time.

So when should I use the toner?

You should ideally use a toner right after you cleanse. The toner will finish the work of your slacking cleanser, erasing any more dirt gunk that may have been left behind.

Just note that your toner may dry out your skin, so it’s best to let the toner absorb into your skin and then follow it up with your favorite moisturizer.

Okay… what toner do I use?

Your local drug store will have at least one shelf dedicated to toners, but that’s not your only option.

I personally am a huge fan of do it yourself home remedies, especially when it comes to skincare. So for my toner I went right to the pantry and grabbed the apple cider vinegar.

apples-and-vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is rich in natural alpha hydroxy acids and has a PH level of 3 when diluted, making it ideal for restoring lost acidity in your skin.

But before you start smearing apple cider vinegar on your face, please note that you have to dilute it first! Putting raw apple cider vinegar on your face is sure to yield a nasty reaction.

You can start by mixing 1/4 raw apple cider vinegar and 3/4 filtered or sterile water and apply it to your face with a cotton ball or pad. If the mixture is too harsh, just add more water. Too weak, add more vinegar. Easy as that!

The hardest obstable to overcome is the stench. With this toner you will literally smell like a salad. The benefits completely overshadow the cons, and luckily after a few applications you will become completely nose blind it.

That’s great and all but i’d rather just buy it…

If you do choose to take the drug store or Sephora route, just make sure to read the ingredients carefully and avoid products that are known irritants to your skin.

If you need a little cheat-cheat, Totalbeauty.com has a great run down of 22 toners at varying price points.

Are you going to consider using a toner on your skin? Weigh in in the comments below!

Captain America & Iron Man return for “Heroes United”

The new concept art for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was one of the buzziest reveals during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The monster film isn’t hitting theaters until May of 2015, leaving many fans shifting in their seats with anticipation. And unless you want to pull a Steve Rogers and freeze yourself in some ice until May, you’re going to have to tough it up and wait.

But fear not, Marvel fans! You can satisfy your Avengers cravings with “Iron Man & Captain America: Heroes United”.

The occasionally volatile team of Captain America and Iron Man have united in this animated adventure to take down the Red Skull and his trigger man, Taskmaster. Together Captain America and Iron Man attempt to stop them from unleashing a Hydra army, essentially doing what these heroes know best: saving the world.

Voice actors Adrian Pasdar and Roger Craig reprise their roles as Iron Man and Captain America, and Clancy Brown enters the Marvel universe as Taskmaster.

“Iron Man & Captain America: Heroes United” is available today through Digital HD, On-Demand and Disney Movies.

Will you be catching the film? Let us know in the comments!

New Arkham Origins TV Spot

Get a rare glimpse into the childhood evolution of Batman! batmanlittle

The newest TV Spot for Batman: Arkham Origins expands on the background of the young and newly orphaned Bruce Wayne, allowing us a brief, typically unseen look into the tween and teen years of the budding crime fighter.

But there is one major aspect of the story of Bruce Wayne/Batman missing from this advertisement: his hair.

Okay, well maybe it’s not MAJOR, but seeing Bruce without that signature jet black hair is definitely a little strange!

Check out the new spot below.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for PlayStation and Xbox on October 25th.

What do you think about a bald batman? Let us know in the comments below! (I secretly dig it)
