Sneak Peek at The Geek Couture Hitting The Runway at SDCC Her Universe Fashion Show!

The second annual Her Universe fashion show, brainchild of actress and Her Universe Founder Ashley Eckstein is ready to invade San Diego Comic-Con with one of a kind geek couture! Hosting the event for the second time in a row, Ashley Eckstein is no stranger to geek culture. She is the voice actor of Ahsoka Tano on the hit TV series Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars and has developed a fandom in her own right. She created the event to spotlight fangirl culture and the geeky fashions that this culture has inspired.
Last year the Her Universe fashion show debuted to a packed house and rave reviews. Highlighting the need for the “geek industry” to recognize its female fanbase. Fangirls are just as diehard as their male counterparts and in this #selfie obsessed world we live in now, girls aren’t afraid to proudly express their girly side through their fandoms! I’m happy to see that San Diego Comic-Con is filling these needs by making the fashion show an annual event and I can’t wait to see what other events this inspires.

“We are so excited to return to San Diego Comic-Con with The Her Universe Fashion Show. Geek Fashion is a trend that’s not going away and once again we can’t wait to celebrate Fangirl Fashion on the runway. You will not want to miss the stunning pieces created by this year’s designers and the audience will participate by picking one of the winners!” – Ashley Eckstein, Founder, Her Universe

This year will feature 25 designers displaying their one of a kind “geek couture” fashions on the runway, they’ll be competing for the opportunity to design a limited edition fandom collection with Her Universe for Hot Topic. “Last year’s winners Andrew and Amy Beth blew us away with the amazing Marvel collection they designed for us,” said Cindy Levitt, SVP of Merchandising and Marketing at Hot Topic. “It truly hit home with the fangirl, as well as our fashion customer and was a fantastic success! We can’t wait to do it again this year!” The exclusive Marvel’s Avengers collection sold out in record numbers when it premiered in May of 2015. Hot Topic has ordered more since then and their collection can still be found in select Hot Topic stores.

Last years winners Amy Beth Christenson and Andrew MacLaine along with Hot Topic’s SVP of Merchandising and Marketing, Cindy Levitt; singer/songwriter, voice actress and designer, Traci Hines; Manager of Licensing and Merchandising at Sony Pictures Television, Jessica Nubel will be on the panel of judges for this year’s fashion show. The 25 finalists competing in this year’s fashion show are: Lauren Andrews, Ericka Angiuli, Kelly Cercone, Laura Desch, Daisy Evans, Jessica Gonzalez, Lindsay Hamilton, Kathryn Henzler, Sarah Henzler, Hannah Kent, Kristin Koga, Harmony Leiker, Belinda Mendoza, Jennifer Newman, Emily Ong, Laura Cristina Ortiz, Leetal Platt, Tara Reich, Adria Sanchez-Chaidez, Amy Scott, Kristi Siedow-Thompson, Sam Skyler, Jesse Thaxton, Oseas Villatoro, and Erica Williams. There will be two winners, one that the judges chose and one chosen by the audience!

The second annual Her Universe Fashion Show will take place on Thursday, July 9th at 6pm at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego during San Diego Comic-Con. The event is joined this year by actress Ashley Tisdale’s company, Blondie Girl Productions as a production partner. Jennifer Tisdale and Heath Hyche will be providing live commentary on the event along with backstage coverage. Also, make sure to check out the beautiful hair and make-up on the runway by the geeky cosmetics company Espionage Cosmetics as they return for the second year. Ashley Eckstein, Hot Topic and the Her Universe team will also be giving out prizes to attendees wearing the best geek inspired fashions, so come dressed to impress! Geek fashion is definitely the wave of the future and I can’t wait to be inspired by this year’s designs.
Which fandoms would you love to see made into geek couture? Let us know in the comments.

Fashion by Geeks: Whimsical Vintage

Fashion by Geeks celebrates the unique style of girls in our geeky community. Our community is filled with such beautiful girls who all express themselves so wonderfully through fashion and they’re bursting with creativity. All around me I see my friends and fellow geeks at events who rock at the personal style game. I just want to run up to them and ask them a million questions about where they find such amazing pieces, and how they grew up to look so awesome. This series is basically my excuse to do this, and not come off as huge creeper. Also, who better to help you find the best looks around than nerds like you! Maybe you’re trying to find your own personal style, but you don’t know where to begin, or maybe you just want fun new pieces to add to your wardrobe, and want to know the best places to shop? Let your friends at GeekGirl World help you out.

The honor of christening Fashion by Geeks goes to one of my most stylish friends Elise Aparicio! Her style is as cute as she is, and inspires everyone around her to step up their fashion game. I met Elise at local bakery GimmeSomeSugar before our monthly book club meeting. I felt the atmosphere fit right in with her vintage and whimsical style, and instantly staged an impromptu photo shoot.

GeekGirl World: What are you wearing today?

Elise Aparicio: I’m wearing a Retrolicious brand dress, purchased through ModCloth; a Heart of Haute “Sweet Sweater” in red; and a black circle skirt purchased through TallGiraffe, on Etsy. My shoes are BAIT footwear Ida heels and in my hair I have a flower courtesy of my trip to Hawaii earlier this year.

IMG_2095

GGW: Why is this outfit a good representation of your personal style?

EA: I love how bright and colorful this outfit is. The colors of the dress make it easy to pair with multiple cardigans and footwear. I like patterns that are kitschy and fun like the tickets on my Retrolicious dress; I feel this outfit best represents my fun and quirky style.

IMG_2096

GGW: Is this your favorite outfit? If not, describe the one that is. Why is it your favorite?

EA: Since purchasing this dress, my style has evolved a bit into more a retro-vintage look, but I would still say this outfit is my favorite. The dress cut is flattering and modern, there are pockets which aren’t too deep, but perfect for days when you’re leaving the house with only the essentials, the pattern is bright and goes with everything. The sweater that I decided to pair with it is one of my newest essentials. The fabric doesn’t wrinkle so it can literally be stashed in your purse or gym bag and it still looks great on. The red adds a pop of color to many items in my wardrobe so I find it goes with practically everything. I’m planning on purchasing other colors in the future. The black circle skirt that I decided to pair with it was a custom purchase from Etsy. To make the outfit “work appropriate” I decided to wear the black skirt on top of the dress. The black skirt is a longer length for work, and the dress adds a little volume to the skirt. Layering skirts on top of dresses is my favorite tip for changing the look of a dress or making it more work appropriate.

GGW: What’s your fashion history? Describe your style throughout your life. What trends did you fall into?

EA: There are many factors that have contributed to my fashion history. The stores that I shop in have changed, which in turn changed my fashion choices. When I was in high school and college, Old Navy and Target were my go-to stores. I was also on a limited budget, so the thought of spending more than $30 on a dress was out of my price range. I don’t think I ever followed any trends. I mainly (and still to an extent) wear clothes that feel comfortable and casual, so it was usually a Target shirt with jeans and flip flops. I started wearing flats when I moved out to Vegas, mainly because I felt it was too cold to wear flip flops in the winter. I’m from Southern California born and raised!

GGW: Was fashion always important to you/did you always like fashion? If not, when did you start liking it and why?

EA: I have always admired retro-inspired or vintage fashions since I was in high school, but I never thought I would look good in them. I spent many years not wearing dresses because I thought I looked pregnant in them, or not wearing shorts because I didn’t want people to see my legs. The older I get the more I realize what styles look the most flattering on my body, what feels the most comfortable to wear, and to take more chances with my style.

IMG_2098

GGW: What/who has inspired your style throughout your life?

EA: My sister has always had great modern style and her clothing choices are always top notch. She helped me transition from sports bras to figuring out that DD’s need to have their own cups. She has a good eye for fashion and isn’t afraid to tell you when something doesn’t look good on you.

GGW: What/who inspires your style now?

EA: Instagram! I follow so many amazing body-positive pinups on Instagram that continue to influence my fashion choices. My favorite instagrammers are: @modernjunecleaver @ameliajetson @feministunicorn @missvictoryviolet @teerwayde @shelovesdresses and @pinupcortney. (check them out)

IMG_2101

GGW: How does your fashion style make you feel?

EA: It makes me feel confident and sexy. Who knew long circle skirts would make me feel like a million bucks?!

GGW: How would you describe your fashion style?

EA: Retro, kitschy, girly, and nerdy. When I find outfits that incorporate all 4, it’s magic!

IMG_2106

GGW: Do you think fashion has powers?

EA: Yes! Fashion can inspire so much positive energy. When you feel good about yourself and your appearance, is there anything you can’t accomplish?!

GGW: What superpower would your fashion style give you?

EA: If I really wanted to be creative, every outfit would have its own unique superpower. The movie tickets on the dress would come alive and admit me into every theater in America.

GGW: Where do you like to shop?

EA: ModCloth.com – Probably my first stepping stone into my current style.

Heart of Haute – So many beautiful designs and 50s & 60s inspired outfits. US made and sold.

1138 Clothing on Etsy

Eshakti – You can give them your measurements and they custom make the skirt/dress for you!

Teefury – all those t-shirt a day sites. Nerdy, mash-up designs on a shirt? Yes please.

H&M – I find a lot of cute, inexpensive tops and dresses here. Also scarves. Scarves that are cute as hell.

Hot Topic – They sell pin up style dresses and tops now. I was very excited when I found out they carried some Hell Bunny brand dresses. Hot Topic has evolved from my high school days.

Luxulite brooches on Etsy. – Luxulite is a woman from England that sells 40s and 50s inspired brooches. I have brooches with snowmen, pumpkins, fruit, cherries, etc. I’m not a big jewelry wearer, but brooches are a fun way to enhance your outfit and add color.

Bait footwear – Bought my first pair via ModCloth. They’re made well and feel very comfortable. It’s also a step up from flip flops. I buy their low heels since I don’t want to die from foot pain at the end of the day.

IMG_2102

GGW: Do you have any advice to give to our readers who are struggling with their style or think fashion is something they can’t accomplish/feel alienated by?

EA: If you’re not sure where to start, pick a few pieces that you can get the most use out of. A simple black circle skirt can be paired with everything from nerdy tees to a fancy work blouse. Staple colors, like red or royal blue are the perfect cardigan colors that will go with everything. If you are always choosing black (which is not wrong – I’m a fan of that color and it’s very flattering.) and want to go outside the box, go for pieces that will liven it up, like a red belt, red shoes, a stylish brooch. Also, take your measurements. Figure out your exact size so you know exactly the body you are shopping for. I do a lot of online shopping and knowing my measurements is key. Always shop at online stores with a good return policy and check the return policy if you’re unsure. ModCloth has an amazing return policy with free return shipping! So it’s a good place to start. Lastly, have fun! Choose items that you feel best represents YOU.

NerdyBound: Mad Men

…If you listen, he’ll tell you how he got there. How he forgot where he was going and that he woke up. If you listen, he’ll tell you about the time he thought he was an angel or dreamt of being perfect. And then he’ll smile with wisdom, content that he realized the world isn’t perfect. We’re flawed, because we want so much more. We’re ruined because we get these things and wish for what we had. – Don Draper

Mad Men is in its 7th and final season. The series finale is this Sunday night. The show has been called the best drama on television and I would have to agree. Mad Men is a period drama set in the early 1960’s, and is now ending in the 70’s. Even though I didn’t grow up during this era, Mad Men still has a way of making you feel nostalgic for a past you never experienced. The show doesn’t gloss over this time period, and isn’t afraid to explore the issues of sexism and racism that were so prevalent to that time; issues that are still relevant to this day. It avoids getting preachy by expressing these issues through the show’s characters and bringing it to a personal level we can all relate to. The characters on this show are all so beautifully flawed, and through their tragedies and happiness you end up learning more about yourself as you watch. There are so many instances where this show leaves you with such a profound sadness, but it’s a type of pensive sadness that makes you wonder about life, the human experience, and why we make the decisions that we do.

The show (created by the brilliant Matthew Weiner) as a whole, is beautiful in all its imperfection, just like its characters. The design and costume choices for this show are impeccable. Just from watching the opening title sequence, you get a sense of how stylish this show is. The opening title sequence is one of my favorites and I never get tired of watching it. It’s inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, and the falling man pays homage to the movie poster for Vertigo. Alfred Hitchcock’s influence is prevalent throughout the series ,and in a way fitting to the recurring theme that some of the horrors in life are the ones we create for ourselves. Not only does the design stay true to the time period, but everything is so fashionable you just want to step inside the set of an episode and live in it. Maybe you haven’t seen the show or you don’t care for it, but its style influence is everywhere. The year after the show premiered, all of the fashion runways were covered in designs influenced by the show. To this day, home decor is influenced by the show as well, everyone wants and needs to own a “Mad Men” bar cart for their living room. I dare you to watch this show, and not want to own every outfit featured. In honor of the series finale, and in celebration of such a stylish show, this week’s NerdyBound is all about Mad Men.

NerdyBound: Mothers in Nerd Culture

Happy Mother’s Day!!! In honor of Mother’s Day today, I’m dedicating this week’s NerdyBound to the amazing moms we’ve known and loved in nerd culture. In preparation for this NerdyBound I tried to find sites, blog posts, and basically anything having to do with awesome moms in nerd culture. I found a lot of sites/posts dedicated to actual real life nerdy mothers out there, and although they left me with several new DIY projects I want to try out, none of them really led me to what I was looking for. Needless to say mothers are extremely underrepresented in the nerd world, which is kind of crazy (prepare for a huge order of cheese coming your way) because moms truly are the real superheroes of this world, and they deserve to be portrayed as such. Luckily, I read way too much and watch more TV/movies than any person should, and I already had a running list of my favorite moms ever to be written into existence for our entertainment. It was hard condensing that list, and I hated leaving characters out, but for the sake of my sanity and this article becoming too abstract I had to. I hope you enjoy the mothers I chose, and let me know who your favorite mom in nerd culture is. Have fun this Mother’s Day weekend and if you’re lucky enough to have a mom to call, go call her. Don’t just text and tell her how much you love her. Call, and above all, appreciate her.

Morticia Addams She’s a style icon with relationship goals and relates to her kids on a murderous level. Morticia is the full package.

Malory Archer Who cares if she abandoned her son and sends him to his death in every episode? A mom that hooks you up with a spy gig and can drink with the best of them is a cool mom, right?

MaloryShop the Look: H&M Sleeveless dress $26 Plus Size Option: Women’s Bi-Stretch Twill Sheath Dress Merona $30, Banana Republic Womens Factory Seersucker Boyfriend Blazer $50 Plus Size Option: Stanzino Stanzino Women’s 3/4 Sleeve Plus Size Single Button $25, New Look Richard White Heeled Pumps $29, Pieces Nigili Pearl Bar Necklace $16, Designsix Pearl Open Cuff Bracelet $27, Gold Plated Sterling Silver Faux Pearl Ring $36, Faux Pearl Duo Studs $7.90, Custom Color Enamel Flower Brooch $4.50

Mary Margaret/Snow I know there are several mothers on Once Upon a Time but if I did them all this would just turn into a OUaT NerdyBound. OUaT is one of the best shows out there that proudly portrays women with very powerful and complicated characteristics. They’re not afraid to show pregnant women as strong heroines and that speaks volumes. Also, you get to see all of your favorite fairy tales come to life. Who doesn’t want that in a show?

NerdyBound: Game of Thrones

I don’t have to convince anyone that Game of Thrones is one of the best shows out there. This season started off slow for me, but I don’t mind that at all. There has been some important character development that I was excited to see. Also, for everyone who caught last week’s episode, how proud are you of our boy Jon Snow?! I can’t wait for tonight’s episode and I can’t wait to see the fashion that’s featured! Game of Thrones has the most beautiful costume designs and every time I watch the show I see such gorgeous clothing, each piece more intricate than the last. One of my missions in life is to commission every piece and dress every day like I’m about to sit on the Iron Throne. Until then, we have the brilliance that is everyday cosplay. This week, I’m featuring my favorite style influences from the show and I decided to do a special “Game of Thrones Fan” NerdyBound since there’s so many awesome retailers out there offering cute fashion themed around Game of Thrones. So, enjoy being a nerd, enjoy the show tonight and dress like the Khaleesi I know you are.

NerdyBound: The Avengers

One of my favorite loves in life is anything and everything to do with Joss Whedon. So when I heard he was directing and writing The Avengers movie I had extremely high hopes and I was not disappointed. The Avengers would come to be my favorite movie of 2012 (along with everyone else that saw it, I’m sure). It was an unquenchable obsession with Loki/Tom Hiddleston that jump started my journey down that cyber rabbit hole known as Tumblr. I had always been a Marvel fan, but now I was in the Marvel fandom! I’ve made lifelong friends in this fandom and I basically got to go to my first San Diego Comic Con because of this fandom. I’m so happy that the Marvel Universe is a part of this superhero cinematic golden era we’re currently in because I get see my heroes come to life. We can criticize the mistakes movie adaptations make until we’re blue in the face, but you can’t deny the magic those movies bring to the fan experience. We get to cosplay outside of Cons, midnight screenings become instant fan meet-ups and, you know, if you’ve been to a good midnight screening, you know they’re kind of akin to a rock concert, the energy level is that amazing. Movies bring more fans, and with that comes more merchandise which equals more fan events. So, yes I’ll probably criticize with the best of them, but for now I’m just thanking the geek gods that Joss Whedon still manned the helm for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I’m so excited for the premiere of Age of Ultron! I can’t wait to see their interpretations of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Although I wish Loki could be the villain in every Avengers movie, I have to admit those trailers featuring Ultron with James Spader’s sexy voice had me going. So in honor of the premiere next weekend, I’m dedicating this NerdyBound to The Avengers! I just want to give a quick shout out to Hot Topic who is currently killing it in the everyday cosplay game. I’m a huge fan of their Orphan Black line and they’ve recently announced their new Avengers line. All of the looks are retro inspired takes on The Avengers, they’re all available in plus sizes, and I need to own every piece. I’m honestly so impressed and I can’t wait to see what fandom they do next. I didn’t use every piece in their line, but I felt I should mention it since I’m doing looks for the Avengers and if it were me reading this, I’d want a link to the line ASAP. There are so many Avengers to choose from, but I decided to stay true to the movies and only feature the film’s core group, as this is in honor of the premiere of Age of Ultron. I also had to feature Loki of course, because I would never not feature him in anything having to do with The Avengers. I hope you’re inspired to try one of these looks for the premiere!

Iron Man/Tony Stark

Iron Man
