This is a card game that is great for the whole family. The game is rated 14+, but with a little help (mainly with reading), anyone 10+ could play. The game was created in 2010 by Asmodee Games, and since then it has won 12 awards around the world.
The game play is very simple; it starts as you being the leader of your ancient city, gathering resources, commercial routes and military armies, and it lasts three ages with 2-7 players. In each age, players receive seven cards from a particular deck, choose one of those cards, then pass the remainder to an adjacent player. Players reveal their cards simultaneously, paying resources if needed or collecting resources or interacting with other players in various ways (players have individual boards with special powers on which to organize their cards, and the boards are double-sided). Each player then chooses another card from the deck they were passed, and the process repeats until players have six cards in play from that age. There are many ways to score throughout the game: completed wonder stages have victory points, the military tokens (positive and negative) are added to the total, possible victory points earned by 3 types of technology that are researched over the course of the game, and collecting sets of those or multiples of the same type add victory point bonuses. After three ages, the game ends. Once the game rules are mastered (which doesn’t take long), it is a very fast paced game. It’s fun and challenging to work together or against other players.
This is a card development game that has many expansions available for purchase which make this game even more enjoyable and challenging to play. My family loves this game cause it only lasts about 30 to 40 min. Most development games are much longer and rules harder to follow. If you love to play Risk or any military board game, this is the card game to try out for sure!
