Windows 10, The Apple Watch and Sleepy Hollow – GeekGirl Daily

On Monday’s edition of the GeekGirl Daily, Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be available on Wednesday, July 29, however, it’s streaming on the Xbox One console now. Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for 1 year for current Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. That is a huge deal considering there is usually an upgrade fee with the Windows operating system. The price point for new users is $119 for the home edition and $199 for the pro edition, and even that pricing is not too shabby. That’s not enough for a hardened Mac user like me to switch to PC again, but I might consider getting PC as a backup, and I can always just check it out on my Xbox One.

Speaking of Apple, the Apple Watch isn’t doing too well, and I wonder why. The price point is kind of ridiculous and pretty much alienated their core demographic. For an accessory that does everything your phone does except call independently coming in at $550-$1,100 for the standard edition is a bit much. And I think everyone can agree that the Apple Watch Edition starting at $10,000 is a bit of a joke considering only the bezel and buckle are in gold. Here’s hoping that when the Apple Watch 2 or S or whatever they decide to call the next iteration will have some nice features that will make consumers want to buy it other than just being an apple product.

Segueing into TV news, fans are raging over the casting of Nikki Reed as Betsy Ross in Sleepy Hollow, and I totally agree with them because Why? Why do we need her? The casting notice made mention of this incarnation of Betsy Ross being the “Mrs. Smith” to Icabod’s “Mr. Smith”, which already lets me know I’m not going to like this season at all. Not to mention they are throwing in some pointless crossover with Bones, a show that is dying a slow death when Sleepy Hollow is already on life support. Pretty much if I don’t like what I see in the season premiere, I’m not sticking around for the cross over episode, and I think the majority of the fanbase will agree with me.

Microsoft Announces Backwards Compatibility on Xbox One This Fall

With E3 events well under way, all the large gaming and software companies are highlighting their big upcoming releases. Microsoft just had their announcement this afternoon, and their news did not disappoint.

For me as a gamer, the biggest letdown for the Xbox One was the inability to play the Xbox 360 games I had already purchased and loved. When the 360 launched, backward compatibility was big news, and original Xbox users were so excited to still be able to play their games with a next gen console. It was announced today – thankfully – a huge selling point for me to make the leap to the One: that this holiday season you will finally be able to play 360 games on One. And the best part of this news is that you won’t have to buy it again through a remake or points.

As of now, there are about 20 games that are in beta using this feature now. It works either by inserting a pre-existing disc into your system and downloading a copy to your console, or by using your Xbox Live account to access your digital library. In the fall when this feature officially releases, there will be about 100 games, with hundreds more added in the following months. Here is the list of games available for backwards compatibility right now:

Banjo and Kazooie: N n B
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Battle Block Theater
Defense Grid
Geometry Wars Evolved
Hexic HD
Jetpac Refuelled
Kameo
Mass Effect
Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark Zero
Small Arms
Super Meat Boy
Toy Soldiers
Toy Soldiers: Cold War
Viva Pinata
Viva Pinata: TIP

Mass Effect is one of the highlights of this list, especially since Mass Effect: Andromeda was announced today as well. Now, we just need to get the Halo franchise on here…

Microsoft Releases Epic 6-Minute ‘Halo 5’ Campaign Demo, Intros Warzone

Microsoft’s press conference for E3 was absolutely overflowing with awesome news. Kicking everything off in spectacular fashion, we were treated to a campaign demo of Halo 5: Guardians that is over six minutes long! Here’s the clip:

Once again we have a Halo game that looks and acts like a Halo game, but this time, everything is SO BIG. Like, grandiose. The demo follows Spartan Locke as he and his unit search for Master Chief – and engage in some serious combat while they’re at it. There are huge explosions, large spacecrafts, and formidable (and enormous) looking enemies that are sure to give even the most seasoned Halo vet a run for their money. With seamless drop-in, drop-out cooperative play being a huge selling point this time around, it’s easy to see why Microsoft began their conference with a bang.

And don’t forget the other awesome thing about Guardians: the addition of Warzone, the new multiplayer mode. Here’s a taste:

Microsoft expects Warzone to be the real game changer for Halo 5, calling it “player versus everything.” The set up is two teams of 24 – one led by Master Chief and the other by Spartan Locke – engage in explosive head-to-head battle in an environment four-times the size of any Halo map we’ve ever seen.

Have I mentioned Halo 5: Guardians is going to be epic? Look for it to hit stores October 27, 2015.

Minecraft Meets Hololens

A game that has taken the world by storm, and has spawned countless of gaming meet ups and conventions is Minecraft. Kids love it, adults love it, and now everyone, new and old fans alike, will fall in love with it all over again.

During the Microsoft announcement at E3 today, Microsoft said they will be debuting a new version of Minecraft, one that will incorporate Microsoft’s new Hololens’ holographic technology. With Hololens, you will be able to take the game play from TV to table, manipulate the world, and get a new type of gaming all while using your voice and hands.

Check out the video below that highlights some of those moments.

Hololens was announced back in January, and the first demo for it was held in April. The headset will be running Windows 10. Microsoft has yet to release a price point for it, but says that it will be ready in time for the full launch of Windows 10.

Combing the Hololens and Minecraft is going to bring gaming to a whole new level. Being able to fully immerse yourself into the world you’re gaming in is literally something out of an 80’s science fiction movie, and something that Nintendo once tried with the Virtual Boy.

With this step forward in gaming, I am excited to see where we go from here, and what other types of games come out for this device.

Top Ten Best Super Bowl XLIX Ads

Now that the the big game is over, let’s discuss the real reason for watching Super Bowl XLIX. The commercials! Here is our list counting down from 10 to 1 of the best ads to air during the game. So sit back, relax, and relive Super Bowl Sunday through these ads!

10. Tie between the Walter White and Lindsay Lohan “Sorta Isn’t You” ads.

While Lindsay Lohan was being a good sport and poking fun at her own image of being a bad driver, we got to see Walter White return to us in his prime to dole out prescriptions…sorta…

9. Toyota Camry “How Great I Am” Featuring Amy Purdy and Muhammad Ali.

The voice-over of the “Greatest of All Time” narrates this spot featuring Paralympic Champion Amy Purdy as she shows us how unstoppable she can be despite having a disability.

8. Chevy “What would you do if your TV went out right before the Super Bowl?”

So, Chevy had approximately 115 million people (including this author) in an utter state of panic with their Super Bowl ad. Luckily, it was a hoax to promote their 4G LTE Wi-Fi equipped Colorado..but yea..don’t do that to us again!

7. Snickers “The Brady Bunch”.

Snickers went full on nostaligia with their ad that reminded us of the age old adage that it’s ALWAYS about Marsha and NEVER about Jan!

6. Budweiser “Best Buds”.

If anyone knows how to pull on those feels, it’s Budweiser. Regardless of whether their beer tastes any good or not. Puppies and Clydesdales! Their marketing department knows their stuff!

5. Tie Between Microsoft’s “Braylon O’Neill” and “Estella’s Brilliant Bus” Commercials.

Both these commercials had empowering messages of how technology is being used to make our lives better. Certain to jerk a tear from even the driest eye.

4. Dodge “Wisdom”.

Sharing with us 100 years worth of wisdom, these seniors remind us of how young they truly are. You are never to old to put the pedal to the metal!

3. Nationwide Insurance “Invisible Mindy Kaling”.

Mindy is every woman who has ever felt invisible in this world…and who has also wanted to kiss Matt Damon. At least we can settle for a selfie!

2. Mophie “All Powerless”.

So when the end of days comes, we know it’s just that God forgot to charge his phone. Also, God has a nice afro!

1. Always “Like A Girl”.

If there was one commercial that really captured what it means to be a girl, it was this one. Us girls don’t think of being female as a deficit. We ALWAYS play full out and beyond, just as any guy would!

There you have it. Our Top Ten with a few extra. If you agree or disagree, or if you have your own list, feel free to discuss in the comments!

Want to Edit a Word Document on Your iPhone? There’s an App for That!

Office-app

Microsoft recently released the new Office Mobile for iPhone.  This app is free to those who subscribe to Office 365 Home Premium and Office 365 ProPlus. The app has similar features to the Office app that is installed on the new Windows Phones.

The app gives iPhone users access to an official version of Office, and the ability to manage and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations all from your phone while on the go. The new app also has the ability to create new documents and spreadsheets on the fly. Having access to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint from the iPhone is a big step forward for Microsoft in broadening their mobile user range.

It is too soon to tell how much of a gamechanger this new app will be.  With Apple’s recent announcement of a new iWork suite for iCloud to be released later this year, this new Office app will need to gain loyal users quickly.

Xbox Expected This Year

Xbox 360 with Kinect

The gaming world has been buzzing with excitement since Sony announced the PS4 last week. But for Microsoft, the Japanese electronics company didn’t announce new technology, but rather a declaration of war. Now, Microsoft is making their move and has a simple message for Sony: its game on.

Less than 24 hours after Sony’s announcement, the domain XboxEvent.com was registered by Eventcore – a company responsible for the planning of large, professional events, including the 2013 AT&T developer summit.

With this new development, It’s now evident that Microsoft is planning on revealing the Xbox this year.

And because the race is now on for the Xbox to be released in time to compete with the PS4 during the holiday shopping season, we can expect a large, and likely live, announcement by Microsoft within the coming months. This will likely happen before this summer’s E3 expo, which was originally rumored to be the stage for the Xbox’s release.

But we’re going to have to wait until that official announcement to get any details about the newest heir to the Xbox throne. The tight-lipped Microsoft has yet to reveal (or leak) any information about the new Xbox’s hardware, appearance, or features to the public. Even the popularized name of the new console, the Xbox 720, is still a matter of speculation.

Is Windows 8 Without Media Center Such a Bad Thing?

Windows 7 Media Center

Windows 7 Media Center

Microsoft recently announced that the new Windows 8 would not have Media Center packaged with it. Instead, you will have to pay an upgrade fee if you have the basic Window 8 edition and you will have to pay to get the software to play DVDs if you have the Windows 8 Pro. But is this really something for the public to be enraged about? Not hardly. Most of us don’t even use Media Center, and there are a ton of free software programs out there that can do all of the things that Media center can do, and do it better.

Chances are, if you are downloading music on the internet, you are using iTunes for your music library. If you are burning DVDs and playing Blu-rays then you are probably using the software that came bundled with your DVD burner, such as Nero, or CyberLink’s PowerDVD. And with the increasing amount of home users streaming TV and Movies through other devices natively, is it even necessary to connect your computer through Media Center to your TV? Not having the native ability to playback DVDs on you computer shouldn’t be the thing that worries you about Windows 8.

There is still no new information on what the pricing will be or when Windows 8 will be available, but here is a preliminary partial list of what will be available by version:

It’s Official! Master Chief Awakes on November 6th!

Halo 4 Preview

When last we saw Master Chief, he was getting into a cryo-chamber, telling Cortana, “Wake me…when you need me.” Last year, we got a sneek peak at E3 of Cortana doing just that (reviving our sleeping super soldier), and now the date has finally been set! Microsoft has revealed that November 6, 2012 will be the official launch date of the latest installment in the Halo franchise, Halo 4. This is the first game in the franchise under new developer 343 Industries, and will mark the return of Master Chief, the central character of the Halo franchise. Pre-Ordering is already available at your favorite gaming outlets. The new game will be the first in a new trilogy for Halo fans.

“November 6 is an important date in Halo’s vast and fascinating history. For the uninitiated, that was the day the Master Chief found a weapon, a parched Grunt stumbled upon the starship, and Staff Sergeant Avery Junior Johnson discovered the answer to one of life’s most perplexing questions. He wasn’t born knowing what the ladies like, you know.” -Bs Angel at HaloWaypoint

In partnership with Rooster Teeth Video, Microsoft have released a couple of Red Vs Blue videos to make sure all game fans remember not to forget the date.

Who’s in with planning a sick day with the lame fake cough? Forget about us in the United States actually electing a president that day!

What To Expect At The 2012 International CES?

A lot, that’s what!

CES buzz is reaching its height as the worlds largest trade show is set to open in fabulous Las Vegas tomorrow. LG has already announced two devices that it will be unveiling at the show; their new Spectrum smartphone (expected to launch on January 19) and what is being touted as the new standard of HDTV, the thinnest 55 inch OLED screen to hit the market at 3/16 of an inch thick (4 mm) and only 16.5 pounds!

Microsoft recently announced that this will be its last appearance at the technology trade show, for a while, which sparked industry talk about this being the the downfall of the trade show giant. Even though attendance numbers have been down in recent years due to the economic slow down in the United States and other parts of the world, this year is expected to be the second largest in the 45 year history of the CES trade show.

There is still a lot of innovation and excitement to be found at CES with all the new categories of exhibition that have been added this year. Instead of always being a showcase of what the big industry players have to offer in the upcoming year, CES is taking a more broad reaching approach and offering exhibition space to technology start-ups and app makers. You will also see a few car makers at CES this year to unveil plans for integration in their upcoming models. Mercedes-Benz will give a keynote on Tuesday.

“There is no shortage of companies that frankly beg us to keynote, [The opening speech is] considered the most high-profile keynote in the world.” – Gary Shapiro, CEO of the CEA

So even without Microsoft in the upcoming years, expect CES to grow with the expectations of a rapidly changing technology filled world.
