Review:

The plot of The Levenger Tapes plays out like a How to Write a Horror Movie For Dummies book. With 90% “found footage,” 10% “tired cops who don’t get paid enough watching tapes at 3:00 am,” the film features horny co-eds partying during semester break in a secluded cabin in the woods who find bloody clothes belonging to a missing girl (spoiler alert: it’s Katie Levenger, the film’s namesake). They cross an Old Indian Burial Ground (SERIOUSLY!), are attacked by creepy The Hills Have Eyes-esque people lurking in the trees, before ultimately solving a local mystery a la Scooby Doo. Only with more blood, screaming, and camera shaking (naturally).

shoppingBased on my summary of the plot, you’d probably think this was a trite and cliche horror movie worth skipping, but not necessarily.

The relatable friendship between Amanda and Kim and the sub-plot of a small town’s investment in finding a local girl gave each facet of the film something thrilling and enjoyable. I really did like Amanda and Kim! I felt like their inside jokes, loyalty to one another, and even their bickering were relatable. Hearing the two lament about how they could have been spending their break on a beautiful beach resort versus running through the dark and scary woods was actually pretty funny. Unfortunately, I didn’t particularly enjoy (i.e. I HATED) the role of Chase, who bobbed back and forth between being the scared wimp and the machete-wielding hero. The performer’s acting chops also wavered. The only thing that was consistent about him was that he was 100% annoying, 100% of the time. As mentioned, I also liked the sub-plot of the missing girl, but that might be because I’m a sucker for true-crime stories, detective work, and investigations. I kind of wish there could be a “Katie Levenger” cut of this film, where they only show the parts featuring her. Sure, it would be short, but it would also be intriguing!

The sets were standard but fitting: a tacky family home with way too many floral adornments, a dusty abandoned house with vintage pictures on the wall, and a dark forest with tree limbs that reach out like hands in the dark. I also found the camera work to be suitable: shots with “night vision” were appropriate for the scene, and the movement wasn’t so jarring that it gave me motion sickness. The lack of score was typical for a found footage film, with music sprinkled in when the characters were listening to the stereo.

Unfortunately, my biggest complaint about this movie is that it wasn’t particularly scary.

I am often teased for being the biggest “scaredy cat” around, but this film did little to send shivers down my spine or make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. In fact, during many of the so-called “scary parts,” I tapped my fingers on the table, willing the scene to be over out of boredom— not fear. To be honest, GeekGirl World, this is the kind of movie you watch if it’s raining and Netflix is broken and you’re waiting for your cake to finish baking. Not great, not horrible, just kind of inbetween. In a word, The Levenger Tapes is “Meh.”

Film Friday: ‘Me Him Her’ Review

Me Him Her is being marketed as a romantic comedy, which is so weird to me! When I think “rom com,” I think cliche, vanilla, popcorn flicks starring Kate Hudson. I definitely don’t picture Max Landis‘ (writer of Chronicle and American Ultra) colorful and spirited directorial debut following twenty-somethings Cory (90210‘s Dustin Milligan), Brendan (Point Break‘s Luke Bracey), and Gabbi (The Leftovers’ Emily Meade) as they question their identity and sexuality and struggle to figure out life, all while alarming Los Angeles residents, floating through space, and engaging in dramatic sword fights (no joke)! This whimsical and zany film was definitely a stand out.

Check out my thoughts of the film in the video below:

Me Him Her Quick Facts:
Written and Directed by:
 Max Landis
Cast: Luke Bracey, Dustin Milligan, Emily Meade, Alia Shakwat, Geena Davis, and Haley Joel Osment
Studio: Filmbuff

Sony to Release ‘Goosebumps’ Movie Starring Jack Black

Sony has taken it upon themselves to make the movie the ’90s kid inside all of us never knew they wanted: a full-length film based on the immensely popular Goosebumps horror novels for kids by R.L. Stine.

Goosebumps will follow Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) and his mother (Amy Ryan, Birdman) as they move next door to Stine (Jack Black, Kung Fu Panda 2 [so good!]). Zach befriends Stine’s daughter, Hannah (Odeya Rush, The Giver), and when he hears her scream one night, he and his buddy (Ryan Lee, Super 8) rush into the house next door and immediately begin touching things they ought not to. It seems Stine’s novels are all imbued with a power that brings them to life, so when Zach unlocks The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, he and all the rest get a lot more than they bargained for. Check out the trailer below:

I tell ya, I never thought I’d see another live-action iteration of anything Goosebumps-related after the short-lived TV series from 1995. But I am stoked beyond belief for this one! It looks like it’ll be a great time for the whole family in the vein of Jumanji (another childhood favorite of mine).

Goosebumps is set for an October 16 release, just in time for the Halloween season! Will you be there, GeekGirl World? I know I will, if only to see if the scarecrow still walks at midnight or if there’ll be any headless ghosts haunting local museums.

New Movie Dredd Exclusive Trailer Debut

Dredd Movie

The popular comic book character Judge Dredd is getting a 21st century make over in the upcoming stylized action flick Dredd. The movie stars Karl Urban (Star Trek) as Dredd, the ultimate judge in law enforcement. This movie already looks like a sharp and gritty departure from the previous film based on the comic book hero starring Sylvester Stallone.

Set in a future American wasteland inside the fictional crime ridden Mega City, the “judges” who have been granted the the powers of judge, jury, and executioner, are the only thing that stand in the way of complete chaos. Machinima has the exclusive trailer available on their youtube channel.

“During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival. -Lionsgate”

New Star Trek Video Game Coming in 2013

Machinima
just posted a teaser trailer for the new Star Trek video game based on JJ Abrams sequel to his 2009 re-imagining of the classic sci-fi television show.

Writer Marianne Krawczyk (God of War) collaborated with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the writing team behind the reboot of the Star Trek film franchise. The game is expected to be a co-op experience, with players having the ability to be either Kirk or Spock.

You can clearly see Zachary Quinto, and Chris Pine’s likenesses in the roles of Spock and Kirk respectively, and while this is being touted as an original story line, it’s hard not to get just a little bit excited that maybe there is a spoiler or two of the movie in this teaser trailer for the game. News coming from the set of the film has been very quiet with only a few photos released recently. There hasn’t even been a reveal of the official title of this film yet, with everyone just dubbing it Star Trek 2 in the press, even though there is already Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan.
