Those of us awaiting with eager anticipation for casting news about the upcoming adaptation of the EL James novel Fifty Shades of Grey just had our prayers answered! Or have we? Charlie Hunnam, the star of the hit FX show, Sons of Anarchy, has been cast as the enigmatic Mr. Grey opposite newcomer Dakota Johnson (the progeny of Hollywood legends Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson) as Anastasia Steele.
Hunnam’s other credits include: Pacific Rim, Children of Men, Cold Mountain, Nicholas Nickelby and Green Street Hooligans.
Using her twitter account to break the news, James wrote the following successive tweets that already have fandom buzzing:
Not everyone is pleased with the casting news with many fans still promoting personal favorites like Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder as better casting choices.
Fifty Shades of Grey will be released by Focus Features on Aug. 1, 2014, in North America. The central theme of the movie being the steamy relationship between a college student (Anastasia Steele) and a young elite billionaire (Christian Grey.)
Let us know what you think about this! Personally, I think Charlie is a great choice and will bring the same level of intensity, intrigue, and machismo that he has exhibited in past roles, including that of Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. Clearly he has demonstrated through his body of work how talented and versatile he truly is, and will be able to take the character of Christian Grey to the next level.
