Geek couture was front and stage at San Diego Comic-Con for the third annual Her Universe Fashion Show!
The fashion show was hosted by actress and Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein, who showed up to the event wearing an incredible LEGO dress designed after her Star Wars: The Clone Wars character, Ahsoka Tano.
But even more impressive than Ashley’s dress were the creations of the contestants in the fashion show.
Each contestant competed to win the honor of designing their own fashion collection with Her Universe. The winner’s collection will be exclusive to Hot Topic – Her Universe’s retail partner for SDCC three years running.
After all was said and done, two winners were crowned as geek couture goddesses by the judges and the audience:
Judges Winner:Imperator Furiosa by Hannah Kent
Audience Winner: Marauder’s Map by Camille Falciola

San Diego Comic-Con is officially a wrap! There has been too much news to wrap our heads around in the wake of the convention, so first, let’s take a deep breath, pace ourselves, and take a good look at all the goodies that came out of day 1 of the 4 day mega geek event!
Disney’s Moana will not feature a love interest
Disney’s newest “princess” will be an independent woman who don’t need no man!
Moana directors John Musker and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid) told San Diego Comic-Con panel-goers that the film’s protagonist, Moana, will not be looking for love in her debut film, but rather herself.
The CG-animated featured film takes place 2000 years ago in the Pacific Ocean. It stars Moana, an adventurous teenager who, with the help of the demigod Maui (voiced by The Rock), sails out on a daring mission to save her people.
Moana hits theaters November 23.
Marvelreveals Luke Cage debut trailer
Jessica Jones’ unbreakable love interest is getting his own series, and now we have the trailer for it!
Netflix’s Marvel series are notorious for their slow releases, but Mike Colter (who plays Luke Cage) confirmed during the Luke Cage panel that the series will be coming to Netflix on September 30.
…& a first look at Iron Fist
Loras Tyrell may have gotten the short end of the stick during Season 6 of Game of Thrones, but the actor who played him, Finn Jones, is doing just fine.
Jones will star in Netflix’s latest Marvel series as Danny Rand (aka Iron Fist), a close friend of Luke Cage, a member of The Defenders, and an incognito martial-arts guru (to sum it up extremely vaguely).
No official release date has been released for the series.
…& the first teaser for The Defenders
All those Marvel and Netflix trailers have been leading up to one thing: The Defenders.
This new Avengers style series will star Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Plus some of the subcharacters we know and love from our heroes respective series.
No release date has been announced, but the heroes will be uniting in 2017.
Daredevil is getting a third season
In addition to these trailers, Marvel also confirmed that Daredevil season 3 will indeed be happening (thanks Joe Quesada!), but a release date has yet to be announced.
Snowden trailer revealed
Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Edward Snowden in Snowden, a theatrical representation of the real story of the CIA’s most infamous whistleblower.
Shailene Woodley co-stars alongside Gordon-Levitt, with Oliver Stone directing.
Snowden hits theater September 16, 2016.
First look at Justice League Action
Featuring over 150 DC characters, Cartoon Network’s upcoming animated series is poised be one of the expansive representations of the DC Universe to date. Each episode of Justice League Action will include two 11-minute standalone series featuring varying characters from DC’s gallery of rogues and heroes.
Cartoon Network has not yet announced an official release date for the series.
MacGyver is coming back to CBS
…Though probably not in the way you imagined.
CBS shared brand new footage of their rebooted, modernized take of the classic 80’s show during the CBS panel.
Lucas Till plays MacGyver, with George Eads starring as his sidekick, Jack Dalton.
The pilot episode will be directed by James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring, Furious 7), so expect this series to be action packed!
Macgyver airs this fall on CBS.
Teen Wolf to conclude after season 6
Sorry, Teen Wolf fans… MTV confirmed during SDCC that their popular series will conclude after season 6. To brighten the mood, here is the official teaser trailer for the latest season:
The DJ plays and the lights dim, all around me the buzz of excitement can be heard. Everyone’s ready for the Her Universe Fashion Show to begin. This is the second year the fashion show is coming to San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s quickly becoming a staple of the convention. We are welcomed by a video from the night’s host and creator of Her Universe, Ashley Eckstein. In this video she explains the inspiration behind Her Universe, and how amazing it is to have this female oriented celebration of “geek couture” at San Diego Comic-Con. For years, girls have been told that we don’t belong in the geek world, and to be happy with the clothing that’s available to men. Her Universe knew that there were fangirls out there waiting for their geek fashion dreams to come true.
“Nothing epitomizes the transition of girl geek culture into the limelight quite like the rise of Her Universe.” – TIME
The fashion show begins, and we’re treated to a look at the current Her Universe line. It’s a bold reminder of how far girls have come in the geek industry to see how many fandoms are catering to us now. It’s also refreshing to see plus size models on the stage. Her Universe always creates fashions with every consumer in mind, and it’s beautiful to see the plus size girl represented in the spotlight. As the fashions make their way down the runway, I can see every girl making a mental note of which pieces they still need to own.
Ashley Eckstein appears in her first geek couture look of the night designed by last year’s audience winner, Andrew MacLaine. The first look is inspired by Star Wars and Princess Leia. It’s a gorgeous gown, complete with a sparkly, flowy cape. Throughout the night two other geek couture looks were premiered, each one more incredible than the next. Her second look is inspired by Black Widow, and is ready to kick ass and demand the respect of everybody in its presence. The third and final look is inspired by Haku the river dragon from Spirited Away. From every angle this gown is breathtaking; it was made in honor of Ashley’s reveal of the night that Her Universe’s next line will feature Studio Ghibli. The president of Studio Ghibli was actually in the audience, and received a standing ovation when he was introduced.

The new Her Universe line has designs featuring Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro as well as Spirited Away. The styles range from cute fashion dresses to simple racer-back tank tops. There was a lot of excitement heard when the new cardigans were spotlighted. All pieces were featured in plus sizes with plus size models. Being able to see models of varying shapes and sizes on the runway, really gave you a better sense of what the clothing would look like when worn by you, and that made getting to view the premiere of the new line that much more exciting!

The 25 finalists displayed their designs down the runway. Immediately the audience is blown away by the first design “Cutie Makes Her Mark – My Little Pony’ by Jessica Gonzalez. This gown features a pink cotton candy train that can be turned inside out to display a striped blue and pink pattern or the train can completely come off and the gown transforms into a party dress! All 25 designs were so creative and beautiful. Finalist Jennifer Newman created a “Unicorn In The Waves” look inspired by The Last Unicorn (one of my favorite movies), and I never knew that so much emotion could be captured in a piece of clothing, but just by looking at this gown you could see the elegance and freedom experienced by the unicorn when she returned to the ocean. “Party Like A Monster – Monster High” by Lauren Andrews reminded us that being girly and playing with dolls is geeky too. Kristin Koga gave us “The Greek Couture Burger (comes with tzatziki sauce) – Bob’s Burgers” showing us that high fashion doesn’t have to be a gown. Her design was cool and screamed hipster artist living in New York city. Harmony Leiker’s “Cocktails At The End of The Line – Tron” literally lit up the runway with her illuminated fabric. Adria Sanchez-Chaidez made the audience gasp with “It’s Bigger On The Inside – Doctor Who”. Her design featured a coat made to look like the TARDIS from Doctor Who, when the coat was taken off a beautiful dress was revealed that was inspired by the inside of the TARDIS. Tara Reich’s “That’s No Moon – Star Wars” look featured a high fashion skirt inspired by and made to look like the Death Star. Sam Skyler had an adorable design that featured a coat inspired by armored Baymax and revealed a white bubble dress underneath to complete the Baymax look. Finalist Laura Ortiz had a Jack Skellington inspired gown complete with a light up Zero. Oseas Villatoro stunned the audience with “Poison Ivy Green Love – Batman”, his gown featured a flowing green train reminiscent of growing ivy and the hairstyle on the model was fit for the grand prize at a hair show. Jesse Thaxton’s gown isnpired by Alien’s was rightly named “Alien Queen”; I’m positive the dress could’ve stood up on it’s own, and in the right light frighten anyone who looked upon it. Each of the designs featured on the runway left such an incredible impression, they’ll not easily be forgotten. I know these designers are inspiring a new generation of geek fashion as we speak. All of the 25 finalists beat out thousands of entries, and that in itself is an amazing feat, they’re all truly winners.

That being said this was a competition and only two can be chosen. The winner chosen by the judges was “Joker’s New Look – Batman” by Kelly Cercone. Her design was a 50’s inspired Joker themed look that Grace Kelly could’ve worn. The colors were undoubtedly Joker, but the pallete was done in a way that wasn’t jarring, and accessible to all audiences. I feel that this played a huge factor into why she was chosen. The audience chosen winner was “Usagi’s Transformation – Sailor Moon” by Leetal Platt. Her design began as cute dress inspired by Sailor Moon’s school uniform and then it gorgeously transformed into Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence. Pink satin billowed all around the gown and it was a magnificent sight to behold, especially when modeled by the beautiful Chloe Dykstra.

I know we’re all saving our money in anticipation of the exclusive Hot Topic fashion line the winners get to design.
The night ended with Her Universe inviting fashionable audience members up on the stage to strut their stuff. Ashley Eckstein then revealed the most exciting news of the night: San Diego Comic-Con is teaming up with Lionsgate for their new video on demand subscription channel, and this year’s Her Universe Fashion Show is going to be the first original series made by the channel. Viewers will get to see all of the behind the scenes action leading up to the Fashion Show! We’ll all definitely be keeping a look out for that. This year’s fashion show was filled with such creativity, I don’t know how next year can top it, but I can’t wait to see.
I was at Comic Con San Diego for the great 2013 Once Upon a Time panel in Ballroom 20, and it was quite a time to be alive. Once Upon a Time: Wonderland was in the works and we were treated to a 10 minute cut. Good Morning Storybrooke premiered and has since become a Youtube guilty pleasure for many Oncers. And Ariel stole Grumpy’s dinglehopper and our hearts with her brief, but thrilling, sneak peak!
And as much as I squeed, furiously clapped, jumped up and down in my seat, and made grabby hands at the stage and screens, I probably would have passed out if they had played this for me:
On a side note, I love that OUAT’s music can be so magical yet so stressful at the same time. *chills* Not only does Amy Manson walk with the comfortable stride of of her animated counterpart…
…but she also possesses all her sharpness of skill, too!
And even more importantly, our new Merida-in-the-flesh looks ready to take on the whole sorted forest!
Now here’s the thing about Merida: the movie was called Brave, not Free Spirit or Merida the Adventurer, but Brave.
Brave can be quiet. Brave can be small. Brave can be stalwart and steadfast. Brave can be graceful and clever. Brave is something anybody can be, but they have to choose to be it. And if you look at who the heroes are in OUAT, you see that those who earn the title “brave” chose to be bold, chose to put others ahead of themselves, chose to embrace who they really are and the strengths and sacrifices that go along with that acceptance. If there was ever a mascot for Season 5, Merida will be it!
There is speculation as to what other role she’ll play in the upcoming season.
With Emma becoming the Dark Swan and the Apprentice’s dying admonition to find Merlin, it’s quite possible that Merida may have her own hand to lend in the search for history and folklore’s greatest magician of all time. Or perhaps she runs afoul of the new Dark One when Emma makes her way to the Enchanted Forest, as teased in ABC’s other promo video here.
Some of Amy Mason’s more recent geeky roles include Alice Guppy from Torchwood (2008), Daisy from Being Human (2010), and Medea in Atlantis (2014). But devotees will remember her fondly as Jodie Hatfield from 2007’s Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud.
What do you think of our first look at Merida? Do you think Amy Mason is a good choice for our new princess? What do you think Merida’s role will be in Season 5?
So many trailers were revealed at Comic-Con today, but unfortunately not a lot of footage has been officially released on the internet.. at least not just yet. Check out our recap of some of day 3’s most buzz worthy events:
DC revealed the trailer for Suicide Squad at Comic-Con, but unlike the Batman v Superman trailer, the studio hasn’t officially released it online.
There are plenty of leaked videos online from the panel, so if you do want to get a grainy, illegal view of the Joker & Co., you better get that done before it’s gone!
As for us, we’re just going to wait until they inevitably put the trailer online in all it’s HD glory.
Fox gives fans a first look at X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman gets emotional
Fox gave the panel audience a first look at Apocalypse, but much like Suicide Squad we are going to have to wait before we get the footage.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the footage begins with a glimpse of Oscar Isaac as the villain, Apocalypse, and ended with James McAvoy Professor X, now completely bald.
Hugh Jackman, who will be reprising his role as Wolverine, spoke briefly, saying that this will be “my last time putting on the claws. This has been the greatest things that has ever happened to me.”
There was an X-Men montage shown prior to the new footage and many of the scenes heavily featured Jackman as Wolverine, all in honor of the actor’s last appearance as his most iconic character.
We do have at least something to share from the event, though. Before the panel even began, Fox was handing out flyers to fans with an artist’s rendering of Apocalypse‘s title character, which you can see on your right.
Deadpool trailer revealed
But once again we aren’t able to see it just yet. Ugh, the folly of man.
From what we’ve heard, the trailer is full of obscenities (as one would expect from an R-rated film) and is absolutely hysterical.
Ryan Reynolds (who plays Deadpool) shared a clip from the raunchy character himself before the panel begin, making fun of his characters past appearances and Reynold’s own superhero past.
Life will be so much better once this footage is shared with the world, that’s for damn sure!
Warner Bros. teases new Green Lantern movie
And speaking of Ryan Reynolds, Warner Bros. teased a new Green Lantern movie
during its introduction of the DC portion of the panel. Among the heroes and villains shown, a logo suddenly popped up saying “Green Lantern Corps.”
Is this an attempt at a reboot? We don’t know, but we certainly hope so!
GeekGirl World will keep you updated on the latest news from Comic-Con! Check back often to see new content.
The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer was revealed today at Comic-Con during the Warner Bros. panel, and we have it right here for your viewing pleasure! And trust us, it is super pleasing.
Check it out below:
All we can really say is WOW! But we’re more interested in what you have to say…
Do you think Batman v Superman has what it takes to be a box office smash, or will it crash and burn instead? Let us know in the comments below!
“It’s an emotional rounding of the experience we had in the first films,” Harrison Ford (Solo) said. “I never thought it would come back to bless me instead of haunt me. … I was very gratified when I read the script, because I read something that I thought was really remarkable. Well written, with some intriguing developments. So I was delighted to be involved.”
…and we got behind the scenes footage of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
Ghost Busters reboot’s first official cast photo
This one technically did not occur at Comic-Con, but hey, it happened the same day so it must count, right?
Neal Adams will be writing and drawing a six-issue series called Coming of the Supermen, which will be similar to Adams’ recent Batman: Odyssey, which also is a standalone book set outside current DC continuity. Coming of the Superman’s main villains will be Darkseid and Kalibak, with three new “heroes” emerging to join in on the action. The comic will debut in November 2015.
Also appearing in November is a seven issue series titled Superman: American Alien. The series will span different points of Clark Kents life, telling stories between his transition from farm boy to hero.
Fear the Walking Dead premier date and trailer
Fear the Walking Dead will air next month, August 23, on AMC. Check out the trailer here.
Chewbacca comic book series announced
Chewbacca is getting his own Marvel Comics series! The series is set shortly after the Battle of Yavin. “Chewbacca is on his own when he crash lands his ship on an Imperial occupied planet,” Marvel explained. “Now stranded, Chewie finds himself caught in the middle of trying to return to the rebellion and helping a young and feisty girl in need.”
Gerry Duggan is writing, with Phil Noto manning the art.
The 5-issue series will begin its run on October 2015.

Legend of Korra Graphic Novel Series Announced
Korra will return in her own graphic novel series! Much like The Last Airbender graphic novel, this series will be set after the events of the show. Readers will finally be able to learn more about Korra and Asami’s relationship, as was confirmed by co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino during the special panel.
The Walking Dead season 6 trailer is here and it’s absolutely INSANE!
The Ricktatorship looks like its back in full force, but for how long? Based on the conversations occurring within the trailer, it seems certain that the Alexandrians are going to vote to kick Rick off the island very soon.
Morgan’s do-good philosophy is in deep conflict with Rick’s own philosophy of giving-no-shits, so season 6 will probably build up to an inevitable battle between the once amicable pair. Plus there’s going to be a ton of walkers fucking shit up.. but you already knew that, didn’t you?
What do you think is going to happen in season 6? Weigh in below!
