Celebrate J.K. Rowling’s Birthday with Her Best Tweets

Can you believe that J.K. Rowling is 50-years-old today?!

It’s so difficult not to love J.K. Rowling. She’s the woman who brought us freakin’ Harry Potter after all, the series that pretty much defined the childhood of every millennial out there (including my own).

But beyond pioneering the world of wizarding, Rowling has also become a leading voice on Twitter, completely slaying people engaging in social injustice and giving people everywhere a reason to love her beyond her literary prowess.

So, without further adieu, here our some of our favorite tweets from this lovely, lovely lady:

When she wasn’t afraid to have some light hearted fun with her fans:

…or give unruly muggles a complete smack down:

When she wasn’t afraid to show love to the LGBT community:

…and was even quick to defend it:

That time she proved that she knows the internet very well:

When she apologized for killing off George’s brother:

…and proved that fictional tragedy even affects the author:

When she showed us all how modest she really is:

When she shared her other possible career choices:

And finally, that time, and every time since, that J.K. Rowling has made her fans feel like pure magic:

Do you love J.K Rowling as much as we do? Let us know in the comments below!

The #DarkSwan Leads ‘Once Upon a Time’ Panel at Comic-Con

My editor had to gently remind me more than once this weekend that we were reporting on all of Comic-Con, and not just on Once Upon a Time. But the latter is all that’s been on my mind.

I’m a well-rounded and cultured geek, but my heart really belongs to Once and it yearns for any scrap of news about it. This weekend did not disappoint.

While I did not have the personal honor of standing in line for four hours, snacking on hastily made-in-my-motel-room peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and readjusting my cosplay headpiece, I did get to delve into the up-to-the-minute news as it splashed across the Twittersphere: The Dark Swan is coming!

Property of ABC, via Twitter

Let’s not beat around the beanstalk. Here’s the video, courtesy of ABC:

Ok, I have a lot of questions about this trailer:

  • Why is Emma in Rumple’s old cell? How did she get back to the Enchanted Forest? Has time been rewritten?
  • Who caught her and how?
  • Why did Emma crush the guard’s heart when she could have used it to control him and either release her or do her bidding? Is Emma there of her own accord?
  • Why does everyone always get an evil makeover when they go bad? How does magic know to put you in black leather and slick your hair back? Where does one get lipstick in a dungeon?
  • Are… are those Rihanna’s rings?

Fan enthusiasm is running high, and cosplay is already happening!

And while there’s a ton of love for the 5th season of Once, there is also trepidation:

Colin O’Donoghue, who plays Captain Hook, had this to add at the cast’s panel earlier today:

“He found love with Emma, so he’s desperately trying to hold onto that, be the better man and keep her heart safe. But he has been a villain and his girlfriend’s nasty now… in a good way. He really struggled with staying on the right path, so it’ll be interesting to see where he goes now.”

To which series creator Edward Kitsis added:

Of course there are the other loose ends season 4 left us, like Rumple’s fate, Zelena and Robin’s unborn baby, and Henry’s status as the Author. According to the panel, we do know that Rumple may no longer be the Dark One, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t still a tricky deal maker. You don’t do a job for nearly 300 years and just forget how its done because you got fired.

Hmm… Maybe he might need a refresher course…

*nervous fidgeting* Sorry, I just can’t stop thinking about what this all will mean for Emma and how it will affect her whole life going forward. We’ve seen just how twisted Once villains can become if left too long in the dark side. Will Emma be able to overcome ripping out an innocent man’s heart? And what else has she done since we last saw her on the streets of Storybrooke?

No matter what new tidbits and revelations come, we do know one thing for sure:

Girl, I feel ya!

You can follow all the #OUAT Twitter action by using #DarkSwan and, of course, #OnceUponATime.

Did you see the panel for yourself?  What do you think of the Dark Swan’s arrival? And where are Emm’s eyebrows??

Top Five Twitter Blunders of 2011

Twitter is known for its real-time knee-jerk reaction responses to social events and what is going on in the world. It has become a powerful social media tool since its inception. However, many of us never think about the consequences of our tweets. Here are some big names that may wish they would have taken a step back and paused before hitting that “tweet this” button.

Godaddy elephant

1.Bob Parsons tweeting a picture of an elephant he shot dead.

Not a very good look for the Go Daddy CEO. Animal lovers all over followed suit after PETA closed their Go Daddy account down once the CEO made that disastrous tweet. For a company that is known for their flashy commercials with big busty girls and Danica Patrick to sell domain services, you would think they would know a thing or two about social marketing. Go Daddy is still feeling the internet backlash over their “I was for it before I was against it” stance on the SOPA Bill in the House of Representatives.

Gilbert Gottfried

2. Gilbert Gottfried and his break-up.

Sure, lots of people take to twitter to voice their heartbreak. You will usually find you get an outpouring of sympathy and support from a ton of people you may never meet. However, it was not the best idea to tie that in with a joke about a natural disaster that claimed the lives of thousands of people and had an entire country heartbroken. Especially when you are the voice of a well publicized duck who is the mascot for an insurance company with major ties to said country. Although, this lost him the Aflac gig, didn’t everyone think that Gilbert Gottfried was dead before this?

Ryan Dunn

3. Roger Ebert’s lesson about drunk driving.

No one likes an “I told you so,” or a “that’s what you get.” Even if all the person comes away with is a scratch, it’s still like sticking a knife in an open wound to hear those phrases from anyone when you have a stupid accident and get hurt. But this was more than just a stupid accident. It was a tragic end to a young life. At least wait a few days, maybe even weeks, or months before you start with the “that’s what you gets.”

4. Chrysler not having a good day on the commute.

Let’s just say that there is no one, in the entire world, who knows how to drive. Period. That way we can be completely honest and not blame any one set of drivers, from any one country or town for bumper to bumper traffic jams, and looky-loos causing more accidents than the ones they are looking at. Let’s also include the professional drivers in that number. The ones who text, tweet, and are just generally distracted by anything that moves in their peripheral vision. So no, the problem is not localized to Detroit, but there’s a good bet Chrysler narrowed the responsibility for that tweet.

5. Kenneth Cole wants revolutionaries to dress their best.

Love Kenneth Cole as a designer. As a marketing expert, salesman, or promoter? Meh, maybe, not so much. Hashtags are a great easy way to add more visibility to your tweets on twitter. If you are tweeting something relevant to a trending topic, then more than likely that tweet will get seen by more than just your followers. But don’t fish for relevance, and append just any trending topic hashtag to a tweet, because you are likely to get ignored. Unless you are Kenneth Cole, who we still love as a designer!

Honorable Mention: Newt Gingrich buying followers.

Come on! That has to be the most desperate social act since buying a date for the prom. Which oddly enough it is comparable too. Better yet, buying twitter followers is kind of like buying votes. Seriously, every one knows that the quickest way to get new followers is to join in on the #FOLLOWFRIDAY #TEAMFOLLOWBACK, #BIELEBERS and #WELOVEMILEY hashtag rounds! (We only endorse the #FOLLOWFRIDAY #FF hashtags because we approve of their message.)
