candles

2016-03-19 15.58.28First up I found Lauren with Boonzy Arts who is based out of L.A. She has all kinds of incredible candles that smell delicious.  Her candles are inspired by her love of pop-culture which grew from her immense love of reading as a child.  Her “Wheel of Flame” candles are a unique idea she came up with and Kickstarted. Each scent can be used to
enhance your table-top gaming experience and comes with a random metal die. For instance, if your party is about to head into a cave to fight a dragon,  you can light the “Lair of the Dragon” candle to take the experience to a whole new level.  She also has pop-culture candles like “It Rubs the Lotion on It’s Skin” which smells like lotion , “Marshmallow Man” which is modeled after the Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Man,  and “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” which comes in a teacup! You can buy directly from her site also so make sure to check it out of you’re not in the Las Vegas area this weekend.

The next booth that caught my eye was Sara with My Faerietale because she has these 2016-03-19 16.00.05absolutely adorable pot people. She is Las Vegas based and you can only find her at conventions so make sure to come out!  She also has a love of pop-culture and a great motto of “I make what I like and I hope you like it too.” In addition to her pot people she also has an assortment of pins, magnets,  clocks and jewelry.  All the artwork is original from her daughter. Sara started at the Las Vegas Comic Expo in 2013 and now is doing between 12 and 15 conventions a year. I highly recommend stopping by her table and taking home your very own pot person.
petsI ran into Shakespeare’s Workshop (almost literally) with owner Summer Shakespeare who was absolutely delightful.  She is also based out of Las Vegas and has all sorts of 3-D prints,  custom costumes and hoodies, wigs, and the most incredible pet costumes.  She can be found on Etsy as well as on Periscope,  where you can actually watch her as she creates your custom item.

2016-03-19 18.26.42If you’re like me and can’t leave a con without picking up a new print (or 10) to adorn your walls, make sure to check out Lisa Hall with Hallustration. She was always into Star Wars growing up and has expanded her geeky interests into anime and now comic characters.  It was through attending other conventions that she learned she could put her artistic talents to work reimagening her favorite characters in her own style. Most of the prints are in digital media, although she very much enjoys traditional art as well. If you can check her out here at Wizard World,  but if you can’t you can check out her Etsy or next weekend she will be at Salt Lake Comic Con.

If you’re looking for a new series,  I highly recommend checking out Katie Salidas. She is from Las Vegas and currently has two full,  6 book series and a third series that is just starting out.  Chronicles of the Uprising is a Hunger Games meets Interview with the Vampire meets Gladiator.  She says that although it has vampires in it,  they’re not what you would normally think of vampires.  She also has her Immortals series which is a paranormal romance. Both of those series you can read without having to wait for the next installment! Her newest series is Pretty Little Werewolf.  The synopses for the first book begins: “All Giselle ever wanted was a family… who can accept her for what she is, a werewolf. In a world where supernatural creatures are not out and proud, this has been a problem for 16 year old Giselle. A child of the system, she’s been bounced from home to home for as long as she can remember. As soon as the moon calls out her inner wolf, it’s back into the system she goes….” you can read the rest on her website if you aren’t able to visit her this weekend.

Wizard World Las Vegas – Weekend in Review

Wizard World Comic Con made its debut here in Las Vegas at the end of April and I couldn’t have been more excited! I had followed the Wizard World cons before hearing they were headed to Vegas but never had an opportunity to attend. For years I hoped Vegas would make it onto their more than 20+ con location roster and this year was it! I would consider myself an average con-goer who enjoys a little of everything when attending a convention and it is always enjoyable when a con has more than enough to offer.

One of the most important aspects is the guests a con gives you access to and Wizard World did not disappoint! I was able to meet some faves from The Walking Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, Sleepy Hollow, the WWE, Heroes, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I absolutely loved getting selfie pics with Milo Ventimiglia who is a complete goofball as well as the amazing Tom Mison who is so sweet and soft spoken, it’s no wonder he causes hearts to melt. I also had the opportunity to spend a good deal of time the the greatest Power Ranger of all time, Jason David Frank. And while there were a couple last minute cancellations, I have learned to expect it as filming schedules change; there is just no way to predict something like that.

Another important part of a great con is the vendor floor. Wizard World had one of the best layouts on the vendor floor that I’ve ever seen. With this being only their first year in Vegas, it was easy to see they were veterans when it came to crowd flow and schematics. The exhibit floor map was so easy to follow, I was able to locate the vendors I look forward to seeing at each con I go to with ease and managed to snag some of their newest prints! It was so nice to be able to walk through an exhibit hall and have the room to stop and really look at all the amazing items for sale without feeling like you were in someone else’s way or crammed into a corner. This was definitely not for a lock of attendance, as there were so many people everywhere, but because the Las Vegas Convention Center they chose as their location has plenty of room to make the aisles wide and the space comfortable.

My personal favorite part of a comic con is the panels. I love when there is an ample amount of programming to keep you busy the whole time. Wizard World offered a wide variety of panels and programming including gaming tournaments, intros into writing, cosplay, creative workshops, social injustices within comic books, the impact of women in today’s fandoms, as well as Q&As with the media guests. I had the opportunity to attend many of these panels, including the ones focused on women in fandom, the Q&As with Tom Mison, Milo Ventimiglia, James Marsters, Arthur Darville, and Robert Englund, as well as a couple on cosplay and the costume contest. This is the first local con that I feel has had an adequate amount of programming for the entire duration of the event. In fact, there were a couple of times I had to choose between multiple panels I wanted to go to.

Overall I am excited for the return of Wizard World next year, I know it will be just as awesome. Wizard World did an excellent job in making sure everything ran smoothly, there was plenty of options for food to fuel you throughout the day, and never was there a dull moment. I am impressed with the quality of presenters for their panels, the amazing vendors, as well as the unique aspects of the Wizard World Comic Con.

Interview with Kevin Conroy: Voice of Batman

k2Since 1992, Kevin Conroy’s name has been synonymous with Batman. He has played this iconic role more times than any other actor and has been innovative within the role being the first to voice Batman and Bruce Wayne using separate, distinctive tones. Most fans would agree that when they hear Batman’s voice in their head, it is the voice of Kevin Conroy.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with him at Wizard World Las Vegas this last weekend to learn a little more about this incredible man.

GeekGirl World: How was it to voice Thomas Wayne in Batman vs Robin rather than Batman?

Kevin Conroy: Well, when I do Thomas Wayne, I just um, I sorta age the voice down and it goes into a much more gravely place. I try to get into the wizened, older world of someone who’s lived longer you know, so it’s kinda a head you get into, too, as well as a different voice.

GGW: Were you a fan of Batman before being cast in the animated series?

KC: Oh, yeah! But my only exposure to it had been the Adam West series in the ‘6os and early ’70s which was really kinda campy and more comedic, so it was nothing like what they were going to do with the show. Although I was familiar with the history behind it, I really didn’t understand the Dark Knight series, the dark knight aspect of it.

GGW: Other than yourself, who do you feel has played the best Batman thus far?

KC: Well, I do think the Christian Bale Batman, those films are the closest to the Frank Miller, Dark Knight stuff. Although some people have issues with his voice, I think that the portrayal of Bruce Wayne is the most interesting in those.

GGW: Have you seen the new Superman v Batman trailer?

KC: No, I haven’t had the opportunity to see it yet.

GGW: How about the newly released picture of The Joker for Suicide Squad that was released yesterday? I can show you here.

KC: Oh wow! That’s what’s so interesting about Joker, is that depending on the actor that does it, they find a whole new style about him, you know. When Mark Hamill k3voiced it, I thought no one would ever be as good as Mark, ever! You know, he just nailed it! But then Heath Ledger came along and did this brilliant, brilliant interpretation of him. So, this guy looks like he will be really interesting, each actor bring such a different take on it, he’s such a flexible character that you can read so much into him. There’s so many different ways of going into that madness.

Kevin Conroy is set to voice Batman yet again in the upcoming Arkham Knight video game. He stated that it is going to be amazing, promised we would all love it, and it will blow our minds! Which is why it is taking so long to be released. I also wanted to give a huge Thank you! to Wizard World and their staff for the opportunity to talk with this living legend.

Wizard World Las Vegas Kick-Off!

13
Tonight was the Media Reception and kick-off for Wizard World Las Vegas! Held at the Linq High Roller, the reception was for media and press to come out, as well as some lucky winners who won passes to the con and entrance into the reception. We were invited up to the fifth floor with open bar to rub elbows with a few of the guests who will be at the con this weekend including Michael Rooker, Lou Ferrigno, Sean Patrick Flanery, and Jason David Frank. Michael Rooker arrived early, had a blast talking with everyone, and taking fan photos. There were several people in costume like Darth Vader with his crew, and the Ghostbusters. It was a really great time hanging out; once the other guests arrived they all answered questions, and joked around with each other before heading down to the third floor to take a ride on the High Roller.

The High Roller is the world’s tallest observation wheel, and this was my first time ever being on it. It was pretty crazy how high up it actually takes you, my ears even popped. After the ride, we went back to the fifth floor, and Jason David Frank made his rounds talking to every person there. He really took time with everyone chatting, and gave me a small interview, which will be uploaded soon. I am so excited for what the weekend will bring and can’t wait until tomorrow when Wizard World Las Vegas officially starts!
