First Look at ‘Arkham Knight’ DLC, ‘Batgirl: A Matter of Family’

Barbara Gordon will finally be getting her own side missions in the most recent installment of the Arkham game franchise in the DLC Batgirl: A Matter of Family, according to Entertainment Weekly. Best known as Oracle in the franchise, Barbara has played a pivotal role is assisting Batman with intel on the baddies terrorizing Gotham City. Now she’ll enjoy her own playable arc and Warner Bros. Games Montreal design producer Justin Vazquez promises a unique perspective. The first image from the DLC was released, showing Batgirl taking down some of Joker’s henchmen with gusto.

Those with the season pass to Batman: Arkham Knight will unlock her story on July 14 and the DLC will be available for purchase separately on July 21. In the DLC, Batgirl will team up with Robin to take on the Joker and Harley Quinn in the nautical theme park setting of Seagate Amusement Park to save her father, Commissioner Gordon. One of the great features of Arkham Knight, the Dual Play system, will be present and allow you to seamlessly switch between playing as Batgirl and Robin during timed takedowns of the various enemies. Batgirl will also have unique hacking capabilities unlike any seen before while still maintaining some of the brute strength players are used to with Batman. If her gameplay is similar to the strength we saw in Harley Quinn’s (too short) Arkham Knight side story DLC then I am super excited. Vazquez notes that “hacking is really what separates her from the other characters. It’s a gameplay mechanic with which the player can create situations for Batgirl to really shine.”

Along with the tag-team fight between Batgirl and Robin against Joker and Harley comes side quests, collectibles, and of course Easter eggs for fans. Because the story is a prequel, taking place before 2009’s Arkham Asylum, I expect that it will have a lot of the same feelings that Asylum had with the modern flare of Arkham Knight.

For those either with the season pass or who plan on buying the add-on, what are you most looking forward to? What are your thoughts on the other DLCs for Arkham Knight so far? How are you liking the main story line? Let us know in the comments!

Microsoft Announces Backwards Compatibility on Xbox One This Fall

With E3 events well under way, all the large gaming and software companies are highlighting their big upcoming releases. Microsoft just had their announcement this afternoon, and their news did not disappoint.

For me as a gamer, the biggest letdown for the Xbox One was the inability to play the Xbox 360 games I had already purchased and loved. When the 360 launched, backward compatibility was big news, and original Xbox users were so excited to still be able to play their games with a next gen console. It was announced today – thankfully – a huge selling point for me to make the leap to the One: that this holiday season you will finally be able to play 360 games on One. And the best part of this news is that you won’t have to buy it again through a remake or points.

As of now, there are about 20 games that are in beta using this feature now. It works either by inserting a pre-existing disc into your system and downloading a copy to your console, or by using your Xbox Live account to access your digital library. In the fall when this feature officially releases, there will be about 100 games, with hundreds more added in the following months. Here is the list of games available for backwards compatibility right now:

Banjo and Kazooie: N n B
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Battle Block Theater
Defense Grid
Geometry Wars Evolved
Hexic HD
Jetpac Refuelled
Kameo
Mass Effect
Perfect Dark
Perfect Dark Zero
Small Arms
Super Meat Boy
Toy Soldiers
Toy Soldiers: Cold War
Viva Pinata
Viva Pinata: TIP

Mass Effect is one of the highlights of this list, especially since Mass Effect: Andromeda was announced today as well. Now, we just need to get the Halo franchise on here…

Microsoft Releases Epic 6-Minute ‘Halo 5’ Campaign Demo, Intros Warzone

Microsoft’s press conference for E3 was absolutely overflowing with awesome news. Kicking everything off in spectacular fashion, we were treated to a campaign demo of Halo 5: Guardians that is over six minutes long! Here’s the clip:

Once again we have a Halo game that looks and acts like a Halo game, but this time, everything is SO BIG. Like, grandiose. The demo follows Spartan Locke as he and his unit search for Master Chief – and engage in some serious combat while they’re at it. There are huge explosions, large spacecrafts, and formidable (and enormous) looking enemies that are sure to give even the most seasoned Halo vet a run for their money. With seamless drop-in, drop-out cooperative play being a huge selling point this time around, it’s easy to see why Microsoft began their conference with a bang.

And don’t forget the other awesome thing about Guardians: the addition of Warzone, the new multiplayer mode. Here’s a taste:

Microsoft expects Warzone to be the real game changer for Halo 5, calling it “player versus everything.” The set up is two teams of 24 – one led by Master Chief and the other by Spartan Locke – engage in explosive head-to-head battle in an environment four-times the size of any Halo map we’ve ever seen.

Have I mentioned Halo 5: Guardians is going to be epic? Look for it to hit stores October 27, 2015.

Minecraft Meets Hololens

A game that has taken the world by storm, and has spawned countless of gaming meet ups and conventions is Minecraft. Kids love it, adults love it, and now everyone, new and old fans alike, will fall in love with it all over again.

During the Microsoft announcement at E3 today, Microsoft said they will be debuting a new version of Minecraft, one that will incorporate Microsoft’s new Hololens’ holographic technology. With Hololens, you will be able to take the game play from TV to table, manipulate the world, and get a new type of gaming all while using your voice and hands.

Check out the video below that highlights some of those moments.

Hololens was announced back in January, and the first demo for it was held in April. The headset will be running Windows 10. Microsoft has yet to release a price point for it, but says that it will be ready in time for the full launch of Windows 10.

Combing the Hololens and Minecraft is going to bring gaming to a whole new level. Being able to fully immerse yourself into the world you’re gaming in is literally something out of an 80’s science fiction movie, and something that Nintendo once tried with the Virtual Boy.

With this step forward in gaming, I am excited to see where we go from here, and what other types of games come out for this device.

First Look at Trailer for ‘Fallout 4’

Bethesda did not disappoint with game trailers at their pre-E3 conference last night! The trailer for the fourth installment of their Fallout series is so nuanced and layered, you’ll notice something new each time you watch it. Take a look:

You’ve got your callback to the first Fallout game with the “Please Stand By” imagery, your standard post-nuclear apocalyptic house and surroundings, plus flashbacks to just before this fallout as we follow a dog’s explorations. Following a klaxon, the dog runs through a neighborhood and the clip interweaves shots from the once-developed streets and bridges with their currently deserted and bleak counterparts. More and more, we see what now passes for life here: various robots, weird scavenging creatures of different kinds, small groups of people living in a tent city, and mutant zombies affected by the fallout, natch.

As we’re following reaches his destination we see the city, which appears to be Boston, in all its former resplendence and glory – and then the bomb goes off and ruins everything. Continuing to explore, the dog comes upon an inactive mech in a garage and then a lone human walking down the street with a rifle. The man and the dog bond and they walk off together.

Yeah, Fallout 4 is going to be all about survival, but did you expect anything else? If the man at the end is any indication, he’ll be your player and the dog will likely be your companion at some point in the game so good luck keeping him alive! Ooh, and how about that mech? He’s got to figure into the story line somewhere, or else why did the trailer focus on him in the end? This is going to be a fun one.

Fallout 4 is due out November 10, 2015 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

Trailer for New ‘Doom’ Game Hits E3, is Super Violent

To get a jump on this year’s E3 conference, Bethesda Softworks released a trailer for their upcoming Doom sequel at their pre-show conference!

Lucky for us, it was a combination of video and game play because they do not skimp on the gore. Check it out for yourself:

The trailer gives us the same first-person perspective Doom fans know and love and piles on all the surprise creatures, demons, hellfire, and chainsaws you can handle. Bethesda has yet to mention any kind of multiplayer facet to the game, but they say we can expect a new feature called “Doom Snapmap” which allows players to make game maps or even tweak the game’s rules to their liking while they play. So awesome!

While this title is definitely going to be more than my anxiety can handle, it’s sure to be a hit with all you first-person gore fans out there – and those of you who have been eagerly awaiting news on all things Doom. Look for the release in spring 2016 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.

First Look At The Official Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer

EA and Playstation made a huge impression on the gamers attending Star Wars Celebration this week with the debut of the Star Wars Battlefront trailer. This trailer looks as amazing and cinematic which brings into question whether or not the real game will be anything close to this. Although the trailer has a “Game Engine Footage” notice, this only tells us that this is what the Frostbite 3 Engine is capable of. This doesn’t represent actual gameplay or actual graphic rendering and resolution that will appear on consoles and PCs when this game drops on November 17, 2015. Playstation is getting promotion ahead of Xbox with this trailer, however the game will be available on both PS4 and Xbox One on launch day.

However, it still looks really awesome, and it looks like the Star Wars game that fans have been looking for. Preordering is available now with early access to DLC content, including the Battle of Jakku, the new planet debuted in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer. In the game you will be able to play out the battle (the remnants of which we are seeing in the new trailer) that happened 30 years before the movie takes place. So let us know GeekGirl World, will you be buying this new game from EA?

New Arkham Origins TV Spot

Get a rare glimpse into the childhood evolution of Batman! batmanlittle

The newest TV Spot for Batman: Arkham Origins expands on the background of the young and newly orphaned Bruce Wayne, allowing us a brief, typically unseen look into the tween and teen years of the budding crime fighter.

But there is one major aspect of the story of Bruce Wayne/Batman missing from this advertisement: his hair.

Okay, well maybe it’s not MAJOR, but seeing Bruce without that signature jet black hair is definitely a little strange!

Check out the new spot below.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for PlayStation and Xbox on October 25th.

What do you think about a bald batman? Let us know in the comments below! (I secretly dig it)

Xbox Expected This Year

Xbox 360 with Kinect

The gaming world has been buzzing with excitement since Sony announced the PS4 last week. But for Microsoft, the Japanese electronics company didn’t announce new technology, but rather a declaration of war. Now, Microsoft is making their move and has a simple message for Sony: its game on.

Less than 24 hours after Sony’s announcement, the domain XboxEvent.com was registered by Eventcore – a company responsible for the planning of large, professional events, including the 2013 AT&T developer summit.

With this new development, It’s now evident that Microsoft is planning on revealing the Xbox this year.

And because the race is now on for the Xbox to be released in time to compete with the PS4 during the holiday shopping season, we can expect a large, and likely live, announcement by Microsoft within the coming months. This will likely happen before this summer’s E3 expo, which was originally rumored to be the stage for the Xbox’s release.

But we’re going to have to wait until that official announcement to get any details about the newest heir to the Xbox throne. The tight-lipped Microsoft has yet to reveal (or leak) any information about the new Xbox’s hardware, appearance, or features to the public. Even the popularized name of the new console, the Xbox 720, is still a matter of speculation.
